  1. I asked a program director, "I'm trying to choose between your school and this other school. Could you tell me some strengths about your program vs. that of the other program?" The response I got, almost word-for-word: "Both programs have their strengths and weaknesses. You need to go to the program that is the best fit for you." Yes, I realize that...but could you tell me some of YOUR strengths, please?!
  2. Oh dear...that definitely seems like it could be a problem. I would hope that once you were in the program, though, you'd be grandfathered in, even if they decided to discontinue it =\
  3. True! I already have some debt for undergrad that I figured I'd be paying for 10 years, and I can't really see myself not working in education in some capacity. But I can definitely agree with the fact that you never know what your life will be like 10 years down the road, much less 1 or 2 years!
  4. I am currently trying to decide between two schools, both of which I am going to have to take out loans to pay for the entirety of the program (looking at between 70k-80k for either school). If I felt like I was going to have to pay 80k + interest back in loans, I would have an extremely tough time going through with that. However, we're all planning on working in education here...are people taking advantage of Public Service Loan Forgiveness? From my understanding, if you qualify for an income-based repayment plan, you could just be paying 10-15% of your discretionary income every month towards your loans. Then, if you work in public service for 120 months while making a loan payment each month, the remainder of your loans gets forgiven. I don't often see people talking about this and I'm wondering why? It seems like a no-brainer to me, so I'm worried that there must be a catch somewhere!
  5. I also was just accepted to Penn's Higher Ed program but rejected from Harvard's. Congratulations to everyone who was accepted!
  6. Yes! I am a teacher, too, but thankfully my day ends right at 3:00pm! At least we know the day will go by quickly
  7. Congratulations! I also just got an email from Penn and was accepted into the same program! However, I did not receive any notification about aid =\ I hope that doesn't mean they aren't planning on giving me any. I am also a teacher but want to make my way into higher ed!
  8. I graduated in May 2015 and took a year off afterwards (though that wasn't the plan). I decided to work during this year because I was presented with a really amazing opportunity, but I still completed grad school apps for Fall 2016 entry anyway. Ultimately, the deciding factor for me will be cost - it will be hard to willingly say no to earning paychecks in exchange for having to take out potentially massive loans.
  9. I agree about the cost thing! Not only does it cost money to get to the campus for interviews, but all the places I have had invitations to have their events during the week, which means now I have to take off of my actual job to get there! Not what i was expecting at all. I was offered a job in the Cambridge/Boston area and found it hard to find anything under $800/month with roommates. I ultimately turned down the position because I just didn't think I could afford it on the salary. Then again, I have been known to be "high maintenance" (hehe), so I'm sure many people can and do live just fine in that area.
  10. I also got an email about my application being complete, which scared me at first because I submitted my application on October 21st! But it seems that a lot of other people have gotten it, so hopefully it is a sign that they are starting to review applications. I am applying for a Master's in Higher Ed, and it said that my decision would be available in March.
  11. So, funny story...I had been working out of the country for the past few months and my parents had been saving my mail in a big pile for me. At the very bottom of the stack of 99% junk mail is a large manila envelope from Northwestern (I had applied to their Higher Ed program). I thought that it must just be a magazine or brochure, since I hadn't heard anything from them. Lo and behold, it was an acceptance letter dated two months ago! And I hadn't received any email correspondence about it, nor had my status on the online portal changed!
  12. No, do not be nervous! I'm sorry to have scared you! I applied to a Master's program I also applied very early (October).
  13. I was accepted to George Washington University's Higher Ed Administration program and was then invited to their admitted students day, during which you find out more about the program and, mainly, interview for assistantships. The only thing is that this takes place on a Friday =\ Has anyone encountered another school doing something like this on a weekday? I was under the impression that most schools did this on weekends, which would make it a lot more convenient!
  14. Mine also says "Ready for Review," but I am applying to the Higher Ed program and those decisions don't come out until March. I applied in October and I believe it has been "Ready for Review" since then
  15. Yup, unfortunately, they took months on my application even though the program I had applied to was rolling. They took a look at all of their PhD applications before looking at their masters' ones. Maybe this year will be different, but I just wanted to warn you because I was really discouraged last year!
  16. I applied to 8 schools last year (different field, though), and I found a mixed bag. Some schools sent me nothing, some sent me a ton of stuff. One school sent me an EXTREME amount of emails after I had already been admitted, which was April, and by that time, I had made up my mind. Kinda weird if you ask me!
  17. Got my first acceptance - George Washington! :)
  18. Hi! Best of luck - that sounds very competitive but I'm sure you're a strong candidate! I'm applying for the Masters program in Higher Education.
  19. Merrimack, Penn, GWU, Suffolk, Northwestern, Harvard, and Baruch.
  20. Hi! I am applying to the Higher Ed Masters program Harvard is definitely a reach for me, but why not try?
  21. Best of luck!! If I can help you with anything concerning MIIS or NYU, please let me know I applied to both last year and was accepted to both.
