  1. Ya, mine was 500-600...then there was a diversity thing for the fellowship...I think i did another 500 for that...
  2. CCA doesn't really have that attractive of financial packages from what I've seen. Kind of trying to stay away from the for profit private schools. I'm excited about UCD, I really hope I get in there, and that is weird you hear that about USC, I've heard the exact opposite. Well not about ranking, but about the program being good / up and coming. SAIC is in the same boat as CCA for me, the UCs just have WAY too good of stuff going on to be ignored, plus I've had some bad experiences in Chicago and haven't found the people to be that nice. Oh and for Cal Arts, I sat down with Allen Sekula and he told me to apply and to mention his name, but again, I'm not looking to add another 60K in debt to my already big pile. My final list, which is a mix of photo and new genres (mostly NG): UCLA UCD UCSB UCSD RISD Parsons Uni of Washington Columbia
  3. To be honest, I don't think there is really such thing as a safety school, if this is your first BBQ...then I think you are in for an awakening, most schools accept sub 5% of applicants since everyone applies everywhere. This isn't undergrad, the faculty takes your work extremely seriously and makes sure it fits in with thier program.
  4. I graduated (BFA) from SFAI, need a change of scenery, I do love SFAI though. ...and I meant University of Michigan!
  5. Who is applying and where? I want to know what programs people have actually checked out that seem to fit the ticket when it comes to NG...I think people know what I mean when I say that. I'm definitely going for (in no order): USC UCLA UCD UCB These programs I've checked out and they fit what I feel has a good fit for me Maybe: U of M - went there...not as conceptual friendly as I'd like...but awesome package (8K a semester + full Apple setup) Stanford - still yet to visit, emailed for a meeting, got told to go to an info session (hate those) UCSD
  6. Hey there fellow SFAI'er...I graduated BFA in 2009. I have been to both university and art school. I much more prefer art school education to university, but I like university funding better. The reason is because it seems as if you are fully immersed into everything art at art school, WITH artists...at university in some classes you may have other grad students who have nothing to do with what you are going to the class for. This goes the same for the other way around, you have the opportunity to take classes in other "schools" within the university. So I don't know, I'm pretty much only applying to UCs for my MFA since the funding is so good and I'm interested in art at the UC level, I'm going to continue to do my thing even if it is a different atmosphere.
  7. oh, and this just in: Thank you for applying to graduate study at UCLA. We regret to inform you that you were not admitted.
  8. Thats what I was thinking too, it is weird that: A) they dont do interviews send out rejections at different times I haven't heard from them or USC... For somewhere that doesn't do interviews I guess no news is good news...but for USC...no news means you aren't on the list...
  9. Golly gee, I thought the whole idea was to only apply to the top schools, man do I feel dumb. /sarcasm I got the opposite impression, I see a lot of schools that I didn't even think about when applying.
  10. I'm pretty sure it was him...he seemed intense, but not overly. I don't know if he was just trying to sell the program or what...but that is what he said. "We want this to be like a 2 year vacation from life, 2 years to work and concentrate on what you are doing"
  11. I'm only a half year out of undergrad....and to be honest most people I've talked to at SFAI who make decisions on grad applications (a couple whom I've assisted) have told me that there is no rhyme or reason to the decisions made. Most of them have told me on different occasions that sometimes they WILL pick someone whose art sucks but is consistent or is awesome and inconsistent. I guess it might be curiosity or just that SFAI is that different of a school, I don't know. Charlie at USC said during the info session that sometimes they pick people fresh out of undergrad just to have one or two there...so I don't know, there are politics, arguments, ideologies, all kinds of crap that is in between you and your grad degree...it has to really be the perfect storm for you to get in, finish, and then get a teaching position or whatever you want to do.
  12. its probably just because they dont want you to get all nervous like it is a job... Charlie at USC said they want the two years to be like a vacation, not like work experience.
  13. That makes me wonder about me getting into USC...I also applied there for NG. Haven't gotten any word about anything from them or UCLA.... I guess no news is good new though right? I know USC does interviews though...
  14. Money laundering? no, more like mismanagement...The old president has been gone for years (suicide) and the new one is pretty OK. They are in the same boat everyone else is as far as finances go...I wouldn't not go there just because of that.
  15. If I had to chose between SFAI and CCA for grad, I would def go for SFAI. I got my UG from there...fucking amazing place. Plus the CCA grad center is in a bad part of SF....I've gone to talks there...homeless tent city.
  16. Very disheartening to hear, I guess this is just the recession fucking people in ways I didn't even know were possible...I mean it makes sense...but why do I feel like that a lot of people are not returning to school because they actually need it more than they just need to defer student loans or to pass time while unemployed... With that said, I wonder when USC is going to send out their rejection letters? and when is UCLA going to do anything at all? do they even interview?
  17. Ya, for undergrad I had to choose between SFAI and CCA...I went with SFAI, and from what I've seen I think I made the right choice for undergrad, I have seen some amazing work from the grads at CCA though. I decided for grad I was going to go cheap and try to get into full ride programs...
  18. So far I've only heard of one person on this forum getting any type of contact from USC, they are probably working through the list over the next couple weeks.
  19. Damn @grad_wannabe, I applied for USC NG too...good to hear they are doing interviews...hope I get a call or email! How was the interview? They do them on the phone right? I'm so tired of waiting, I need to move out of this house I'm in, wether it is to LA or to another place around here...I just need to get out. Haha! So far: Applied to: Yale Scuplture (rej) UCI Crit Theory/Performance art (rej) UCLA NG (waiting) USC NG (waiting)
  20. Define "realistic work"
  21. Oh, and for anyone who is applying to SFAI...ask me anything about the school and I'll give you my honest answer. I graduated with my BFA in photography there last semester (FA2009), I am friends with the grad students and a bunch of the admin/faculty people.
  22. Got my second rejection letter for UC Irvine (Crit theory/performance)
  23. Applied: Yale (Sculpture) USC (New Genres) UCLA (New Genres) UC Irvine (Crit THeory/Performance art) Accepted: ? Rejected: Yale (2/5/10)
  24. lol....what a bunch of lazy recommenders...
  25. I'm only applying to yale for sculpture...applying to UCLA for New Genres, and to UCI/USC for studio I heard Yale's Sculpture is very diverse, everyone I talked to told me to apply to it. I was told it was like SFAI/UCLA's New Genres program which is based on video/installation/performance art.
