Okay I am very confused b/c I never anticipated looking into this at all. I hope someone had an excellent adviser and can help me out! I am currently in a 12 class post-bacc program. They have outlined 12 classes we take as "common" pre-reqs for Graduate programs such as phonetics, anatomy, audiology, neuro-anatomy etc. I am curious can I take one of the classes they want me to: "speech and hearing science" at a different school/online to get it out of the way this summer? I want to b/c I commute 3 hours round trip daily and next semester the schedule is 5 days a week . One reason i'm so confused is different schools want different classes so I'm all mixed up on do I need to take all these classes? But then what about my observation hours that are required? I'm so confused b/c do I have to take all the post-baccs in my program since I'm telling schools that's where I took them or do they just highlight stuff on transcripts and check it off? I'm already going to be sending them 4 transcripts since I took a chem class online and went to a CC my first 2 years and am doing my post-bacc away from my undergrad school since it didn't have one. This post is so jumbled if anyone can interpret it i'd appreciate the clarity

Attending a developing program?
CBG321 replied to RTR_SLP's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Okay I have some insight from what i've heard about a local program that is fairly new in the scheme of things. The very first year or two people who graduated weren't highered at the school my SLP contact works at because they felt they didn't know enough information. So for a little while the new program (at least at her school) had a reputation of their interviews not leading to hire in that school district due to lack of knowledge. A few years later they have made some tweaks to the program and it seems their reputation has changed to being a positive one with well prepared students. So it took a few years for the school's program to really find it's footing. I'd take a look at where their graduates are working and see if that setting matches where you want to go! And explore where they are in the process you could either be in the good part of the program or the stumbling part of the program. I wouldn't have considered this school the first couple years b/c I want to work in the setting that had turned them away. Now i'd consider them because they've worked hard to improve their image and make sure their graduates know their stuff! -
CSUN California State University Northridge program

I would hope so, I think not being able to get classes at the graduate level is kind of ridiculous! I'm also trying to get more information on their organization, what the student life is like. I find their website to be very unhelpful compared to other programs -
What should I be doing now/prepping now?

Okay good since only a few of the schools I am looking at right now are CSDCAS I can save myself some major money! I'm so glad to have this information! And good to know @Bettercallsaul! -

Hmmm so would you say you felt it was more similar to a job interview? Did you consider the questions general get to know you questions or high profile job where you need to know the company statement type of thing? Were there any specific speech related questions? I'd actually be happier with general b/c I don't want to blank on something I can remember if I look at it 2 minutes but didn't think i'd need to recite in their interview. I think that maybe the schools ask general questions to get a feel for your personality and people/talking skills. My assumption with general questions is that they already know you are set academically with a 4.0 and great GRE scores so the interview is just assessing personality? Which is also intimidating but I feel like that is much more my area than standardized tests ahaha. I can see how it would be annoying though after doing a ton of prep and then being blind-sided with questions you could be asked for at a fast-food restaurant. -

GOOD to know! I was trying to find some CSDCAS schools to make it easier on my letter's of rec. But honestly most of the programs I am feeling the most interested in are not using CSDCAS... -

If you send it ahead of time do they keep it for months? Just because I plan to test at the beginning of summer. Should I call the schools and ask? Or what do you recommend? Also if I re-take it for whatever reason would that be a disadvantage if I didn't do well, or would I know my score before sending it to them? -

Thank you everybody! This is all great information, and I appreciate all of it -
I'd contact them now because maybe they'll have something going on in the summer and you can get your foot in the door before other students even if it isn't until Fall. It was fantastic! I learned a lot, even though I had no foundation at the time because it was before I entered the program. Now if I return I'd learn so much more and it would be even more interesting. We transcribed in plain English idk how to say it wasn't phonetic? And later coded it for morphemes the Professor was interested in as possible early markers of language disorders in pre-school age children. Time commitment was...twice a week for a few hours. One semester I only did one day a week. It all depends on the Professor's needs and how many other people are working in the lab. It was at times stressful (probably moreso having no background knowledge) just because their were deadlines and it is a learning process listening to preschoolers with articulation errors and grammar errors and listening to 20 minutes of it take a long time to transcribe! But attending lab meetings and doing the lab work (transcribing) was all we had to do. I am a returning student and went to my undergrad college as a way to get some first hand experience in the major so I could see if I wanted to make the commitment to take this journey of getting a post-bacc and applying to Grad school. I'd say contact anyone that sounds interesting and i'm sure they would let you know up front if you needed any special knowledge. I went through a little mini-training as did the rest of the lab. I feel like that should be pretty typical and teach you anything you need to know. Good luck!

I've done the pre-reqs thank goodness! And commuting in this kind of traffic should get us a special nod from those Grad committees ahha it's like having a part time job where you can't even look over your notes. I need to prep better for the GRE, I have the Manhatten books and some flashcards but you're right I need to really plan out my studying and treat it as important as it is. I've been avoiding it lately because I'm not finished with the many math books and am not a strong math student. Are schools more concerned with the verbal score? Oh something i've been debating is I am currently volunteering at a private practice with little kids. Which aligns with my future interests of working with children. If I know I don't want to work in a hospital setting is it still beneficial to try and volunteer at one or will school's see through that and feel it's not genuine since my L.O.I is more geared towards what population got me interested and my experience with children. It might be possible to work at a children's hospital which would be a better match... Thank you both! -
I'll be applying next Fall but like most people will be taking a full load of classes and also commuting is going to take up a LOT of my time. I wanted advice on a timeline of things I may not be thinking of and anything people in the past have experience neglecting and wish they had done earlier. Little details or questions I should be asking that i'm not thinking of... I'll be taking the GRE this summer and just want to finish anything early that I can to try to reduce a little stress. Thanks

Firsthand reviews of Graduate Programs
CBG321 replied to CBG321's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Thanks for the amazing informative description! It's really helpful, covers all the things i'd be interested in knowing about a potential Grad school! -
Oh didn't think of the update. And I'm mostly concerned with numbers of applications which they should know by February 1st/2nd most schools. I feel like the class size doesn't change drastically so not as worried about that number. Thank you!
-
Thank you! At least I know when they'll have the information. Stinks for people who are planning ahead and trying to get information before it's last minute, it seems pretty late imo. I guess i'll go call 30 schools so I can have a diverse set of percentages to choose from with real averages. Since I won't have time to retake the GRE after getting that super prompt ASHA info lol.
-
I find that incredibly annoying to hear. The Asha page claims it was updated at the very end of February at which point the school should have known how many applicant they had that cycle. Most schools don't list it so you have to figure out who to contact and when and cross your fingers they actually get back to you. I'm most interested in applicants accepted percentages. So Eastern New Mexico University is 16%!! That sucks to have bad information that can easily be corrected. I guess everyone is taking the "it's hard to get in" information and with their application choices switching the "less competitive schools" into the more competitive schools. What a frustrating process for people that are trying to apply to schools they are really interested in but also try and choose those schools realistically. Thank you for the information!

Wichita State vs. University of Kansas

I will thank you! -
I'm actually applying in the Fall so haven't quite started yet. I'm just trying to be prepared and realistic about where i'm applying and know ahead of time so I can cater my statement of purpose to each school etc. This is good information though b/c I already live in a state where some schools are 8% if i'm spending money on those slim odds i'd at least want in state tuition lol.
-
I feel like maybe since everyone is hearing how competitive things are more ppl are applying to those "higher" percentage of acceptance schools. Which makes everyone less likely to get it. Now i'm wondering if those middle ground schools might be getting less applicants as people are becoming more aware of their odds. Just got to do the best application I can I suppose and apply to schools I like and hope for the best! Man how exhausting to have to be strategic about everything.
-
Hey I just found out that two schools I was looking into have totally incorrect stats on Edfind in terms of percentage accepted. They were PSU and UofO. Has anyone found this to be the case for the majority of schools? Ex: Asha 44% real life 20% (just approximations not real figures). I understand how competitive these programs are, and am working hard but this is ridiculous to not even have accurate information at our disposal. Guess i'll be emailing a ton of schools to try and find the real stats. This whole process is frustrating, and i'm not even applying yet.
-
Ughh that is crappy! Sorry to hear it, I wish you good luck next cycle and a kick butt GRE score!
-
Omg that is insane! This is going to sound totally selfish but who keeps advertising this major as one for everyone to pursue when it's so difficult to get into? Because I can't imagine it is plain old word of mouth. I think they need to stop publishing those "this is a great job" articles haha. Sorry just my 'i'm intimidated by those numbers' reaction. Glad i'm looking into this stuff now though! Ruby were you not recommending due to the crazy amount of applications or anything specific about the program? Goodness those numbers are stress inducing! Ty
-
Wow that is way off. Thank you I will be crossing UO off my list right away with that percentage gap. Have you seen that with a lot of schools and did you find out on their school's website or just as a result of applying there. Dang it, I hope that's not the case everywhere b/c 30% to 8% is a huge difference! Thank you for the information!

Science courses before grad school??
CBG321 replied to Kate22192's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I'd double check for the AP (mostly b/c of the title) but if it is supposed to be college credit I feel like they should accept it. I think you could pick a random school that offers a master's program and ask them. They should have that information, i'm sure a lot of ppl have that question. For undergrad coursework only Chem/or/Physics and you'll be all set for the "unrelated" classes as I like to call them haha.
