Oh that's a good idea too, I haven't paid too much attention to those numbers yet -
Statement of Purpose hooks, help please!

#2 sets you apart and is the most interesting in my opinion . Think of how many applications they read, yours will sound unique from the start with that introduction! -
Ahhhh I'm so thrilled to hear you say that about the scholarships! I was scared about that haha. Do you attribute the stress to typical Grad school stress or b/c the program is shorter than most? It sounds like an amazing gig! I liked the look of their program prior to seeing that, afterwards I am really going to have to get in touch with them b/c I want them to know my name haha. Thank you for the advice, especially knowing Dr. Park is friendly encourages me to make that phone call . I have a friend in Houston but that is my only Texas connection. I'll probably be a little bit of a fish out of water but I can handle that for a year in an excellent sounding program! Thank you for the information, I really appreciate it!

# of applicants vs. # of slots calculation question

Yeah, they are very different numbers. I guess it just comes down to luck if you are one of the first accepted or a lot of ppl choose different schools. Makes the process a little more confusing... -

# of applicants vs. # of slots calculation question

Yeah, i'm trying to think positive and assume that i'd be one of those lucky offers hahaa. But just wanted to see what most people based the stats on! Thank you! -
I thought I was doing my calculations right and then I realized I may have been mistaken. Originally I was calculating the stats of different grad school admissions like this: Number of admissions offered received-- divided by --number of applications. Is it more prudent to use the target class size? I'm seeing a huge gap between those two numbers at a few schools so might have to re-calculate. Thank you!

Thanks for the information! Are you enjoying their program? I think he's the 2nd person I emailed, so maybe I just have terrible timing! Which is very understandable with admissions news happening right now. I'm glad to hear non-Baylor undergrads have a shot
-
Thank you, Kathryn was the first person I sent an email to, in February ahha. Maybe they are just a department that is more phone reachable? I guess i'm just used to having more trouble reaching people by phone haha. Gotta switch modes again! I'll have to give them a call in the future

Dang it! Thank you, for making me feel less unworthy of their time if it is typical hahaha. How disappointing! I was interested b/c it seems like a really cool program and is accelerated to boot! I did notice that every Graduate student they feature was a Baylor Undergrad student, or their parents were. I was trying to ask them about that but apparently them not replying sends a negative message about the program's responsiveness or interest in students from any other school. Very disappointed, but I agree I am leaning towards seeing it as a sign that they are not worth applying to if they are already showing disinterest in informing potential applicants. Thank you!

I don't have much information but am also looking their program. I have heard Flagstaff is really cool though. I know an SLP that went to NAU but the program was going through some changes/issues when she graduated. I'm sure it has improved since then b/c she graduated a while ago, but i'd love to hear that first hand from more recent students! -
Anyone that started classes already have any reviews on the school and program? I'm researching schools and trying to get a feel for student life at each! Thank you!
-
So i'm not an applicant yet, but am interested in some schools in Texas. Does anyone to applied to Baylor know who the best contact person is? I've tried two different emails and have received no responses. Is that typical? Or is it just bad timing since they are probably sifting through applications right now.. I'm just trying to gather information and haven't been successful so far! Thank you

Thank you I was wondering about that for awhile twinguy!

Hi, sorry not to have any news on interviews. But I was curious if GVSU is still listed as a "candidate" for accredidation what does that mean for Graduates that graduate before they are fully accredited?

Is it possible that there aren't a lot of POC that applied to that specific school with your stats? Even if an undergrad program is diverse, each of those students apply to different schools, so unless we know they were turned away or refused, (knowing all their stats) can we draw a correlation? This program is just so competitive that I would hope they aren't looking at any factors beyond a student's qualifications! In saying you were the only POC at the interview, is that referencing you were the only non-caucasian person being interviewed? If that was the case, I find that incredibly disappointing and something we all need to work to change once we move forward with our education and professional influence. This study below though, came to mind. Although not directly related it would be easy to draw parallels if there is some "ideal" speech pathology student to Graduate committees even if it is unconscious. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2014/04/24/study-finds-faculty-members-are-more-likely-respond-white-males-others

Thank you for the information! That is exactly what my interests are too haha, Children, AAC, Autism, literacy, and accent reduction just sounds fun. I have looked at their website but find it a little difficult to navigate compared to others. I'll be sending an email soon inquiring about specific coursework, b/c all I can seem to find is a long list of a lot of good classes, but I want to know which are Graduate "core" coursework and not electives b/c I want to take them all haha. Again thank you for the good news

I totally agree with what other posters are saying. If 3/4 random peers look at the information and give you advice to not go out of your way, so to speak, to accumulate extra-activities or resume builders I'd consider that. The Graduate committee might look at the application and say she's doing all this stuff just to get into graduate school. Which they don't like, even though they kind of force applicants to do these things to try and stand out! What a catch-22! Maybe look at your activities objectively and ask yourself what does this tell the graduate committee? Right now it seems to show you are very hard working and busy. It doesn't really show what got you interested in the program or what outside activities you've done to be sure this is your dream career. The best advice I ever heard from a friend who is in a really great Graduate school, is that your application should let the program know exactly why you are interested without you having to explain it! Good luck!

Hi i'm not accepted, However I might be applying next application cycle. I was wondering what made you pick UNL? I'm trying to gather more information on their program
-
Going through my Grad school research, i've of course noticed the wide range of tuition costs for each program. Including the increase found in most out of state programs. Aside from programs that are listed on the WRGP for instance. Is the best way to email each program? I would assume yes, but a few schools are very unresponsive so I'm trying to find some alternative avenues as well I may not have thought of. Also if a website seems to have assistantships or lists on edfind they offer say 6 students financial aid, are most merit based or financial need based? Just want to check if there are any questions you guys can answer to shorten my email to these busy program directors. Thank you!

Embarrassingly low GPA, I don't know what to do...
CBG321 replied to TTUGrad2013's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I agree, I honestly think schools should be REQUIRED to interview everyone they let into their graduate program. One of the most important aspects of the job is being able to communicate effectively in a professional manner and also with whatever population you choose to go into. Why aren't they giving us questions that relate to our future careers? I know a lot of 4.0's that I would hate to work with based on their social skills. As a colleague, parent, or client, why is that not important to Grad schools? It's important to the rest of the people involved! Or if you want to work in a school or private practice, are you good with children? Are you good with the elderly? Do you have any job experience??? (Personally I'd take someone with job experience and volunteer work over someone who has a 4.0 and stellar GREs!) Just some questions I ask myself about the 4.0ers that are great academically but would make me walk out of the office unhappy and not willing to return!
