  1. I'm also on their "alternate" list but I just assumed that everyone one their honorable mentions list would be considered an alternate. Is there anyone who received an e-mail stating that they will be on the honorable list but are not alternates?
  2. I also got an honorable mention. I'm in my second year as a biochemistry PhD student, first time applicant. Congrats to those who received the fellowship!
  3. So happy that this process is over and done with! I never expected it to be so stressful. I experienced all types of emotions throughout. I was already formulating a plan B at the end of December as I didn't receive my first interview invite until January. Phew, I'm so glad to have that stress behind me and to have been accepted to a couple of my top schools. I got so many great tips from this forum and it was always comforting knowing that I wasn't the only neurotic one going through this crazy process. Duke, here I come!!!
  4. Congrats everyone on their amazing acceptances!!
  5. I was recommended for admission today for the biochem program at Duke! Dreams do come true Though I interviewed at MD Anderson yesterday and today and their research and facilities are absolutely phenomenal!! If I get offered admission I'll have a difficult time deciding between the two as both are a great research fit, have competitive stipends for the cost of living, and have programs that support underrepresented students.
  6. How long after the interview is a good time to send a thank you e-mail? Is a week too long?
  7. So I got an e-mail earlier today from a professor inviting me to interview at the Science Park campus of MD Anderson as part of my GSBS interview weekend. I would be having dinner with students in Austin on Feb 18th, and would visit the campus the following day to interview with faculty (the same day I would be traveling to Houston for the other portion of the interview). I'm guessing that they're offering me this opportunity because I live 30 minutes from Austin and 1 hour away from the campus. Either way, I'm getting even more excited about the GSBS program Has anyone else received such invite? Oh and I got a generic e-mail from CU-Boulder stating that they aren't going to offer me admission to their Biochem program...womp womp.
  8. Prior to application season, I wasn't even considering applying to Texas schools (besides UT Austin, since my gf loves the city) but the more I looked into schools here with research that interests me that more I realized how great of a fit most of the Texas schools are for me! Hopefully I'll figure out what's the most important to me once I actually visit the schools, because right now I'm definitely torn.
  9. I went back to look up the stipend for GSBS and I didn't realize it was so high, considering how cheap it can be living in Texas And I'll be PM'ing you soon about Iowa, I have quite a few questions about it.
  10. Actually I just realized that I was looking at the January calendar and not the February calendar, d'oh!! So I'll have three days between my interviews after all Good luck with your interviews!
  11. Darn, my Iowa interview is March 5-7 and I've already booked the flight. I just replied to the e-mail from this morning asking about alternative dates, so if the March weekend is the only other option it looks like it'll be a draining 6 days! I really look forward to the GSBS interview though, research-wise, it was one of the best fits for me. Although I really want to leave Texas, there's such great research at several institutions here!
  12. Just got an interview for the GSBS program at UT-Houston So the date for the interview is Feb 19-21, but I'm getting back from my Duke interview Feb 18th. I live in Texas, and Houston is a 3hr drive from here so I'd probably be able to drive there. I should probably inquire what the alternative dates are though, because being at interviews 6 days in a row may be too tiresome :/
  13. Oh jeez I've definitely been guilty of overanalyzing e-mails from my POIs. The last time I corresponded with one of my POIs (a month before submitting my application) she ended her e-mail with "Thanks for applying, and I'll be looking forward to meeting you next spring during your visit." I've tried to not think much about it but ahh it's so hard not to! Although I actually got an e-mail from Iowa the morning after I submitted my application, in which they told me that they were interested in my credentials and urged me to send the required documents by the deadline. I ended up receiving an interview invite a week later. So with that experience it's become increasingly harder for me to not read too much into the wording of e-mails.
  14. I guess I'll stop lurking and contribute a bit. These are my (not so stellar) stats: Undergrad & Masters: State school Major: Biochemistry (MS Thesis) Major: Biochemistry (undergrad) Minor: Biology (undergrad) GPA: 4.0 (MS), 3.39 (BS) Science undergrad was 3.0 Position: don't know Type of Student: Domestic, female, hispanic, first-generation Gre Scores Q: 159 V: 152 AW: 4.0 Research Experience: 2 years of research experience, one 1st author publication in preparation and one middle author publication also in preparation, one national conference presentation and a seminar talk Awards: Faulconer scholarship (5 years), SMART grant (one year), Alpha Chi membership (3 years), H-LSAMP scholarship (2 years), FASEB MARC travel award, South Texas Doctoral Bridges Program scholarship (as a grad student) Activities: I was a biochem tutor from junior-senior year Special Bonus: 3 strong LORs and perhaps my disadvantaged socio-economic background? Oh and I know the dean of admissions at UTHSCA very well, in fact, she helped me edit my SOP so I think I have a good chance of being admitted to that program. Applied: UT Austin (ICMB- Biochem) Baylor College of Medicine (IMBS) MD Anderson (GSBS) UTHSCA (IBMS) University of Colorado Boulder (Biochem) Penn State (Biomedical sciences) Case Western (biomedical sciences) Harvard (BBS)- Assumed rejection Cornell (BMCB) -Rejected University of Washington (MCB) -Rejected University of Iowa (MCB)- Interview Duke (biochem)- Interview Before today I had only received the two rejection e-mails from UW and Cornell. I feel so relieved and excited that in one day I got the Iowa and Duke interview invitation e-mails. I'm still hoping for good news from Colorado and Baylor, as those are my other top schools.
