  1. I will be entering my first year of a history M.A. in September, and I have three TAships over the next two years.
  2. Congrats redrose27, that is an impressive list of acceptances.
  3. Congrats LeventeL, I remember reading your draft SOP in an earlier post, and I thought you had a great writing style. I even printed out your SOP to use as a comparison for how to structure or begin my own draft. I also had a problematic start to my undergrad, and am very happy to be where I am. I should also say, thank you ashiepoo72, for reviewing my own sop, and others, you have been super helpful with your editing and advice on many of our SOPs.
  4. Not sure if this helps, but... My undergrad mentor wrote an amazing letter of recommendation for me... and he let me review it. Of course I did not say anything about what he wrote, as he listed all of my strengths and none of my weaknesses. He wrote an amazing letter that I reread quite often, and I feel quite positive about myself after reading what he had to say about me. However, in my letter he stated that he does not encourage me to pursue a PhD. I am Canadian so we usually have to do an M.A. and then a PhD. I was very upset about this. One of my other recommendation writers has encouraged me to pursue a PhD. I am worried about the job opportunities available to me if I were to pursue a PhD, and I understand my mentor's advice. He did both his masters and doctorate at the London School of Economics and had part-time positions until he was offered a full-time teaching position at a school in Canada. He has a jaded outlook on the job market, and I don't blame him. I just want to emphasize that every person has a different experience with finding work and using their education to their advantage. My mentor even told me that he sucked at putting together a resume, and he had to have a peer help him out before he was even considered for part-time teaching positions. Also, it would help if you stated what your area of study was.
  5. I upvoted it.
  6. I hope you hear some positive news, good luck!
  7. That is awesome anthrohis7092! Congrats!
  8. Thanks for the advice, I did send an email to the graduate coordinator, letting him know that I was very excited about the funding offer they provided and that I would be accepting the offer. He forwarded the email to my POI, who emailed me a congratulations email. I had received a "tease" email early on, and then once a decision was made, the graduate coordinator emailed me to let me know. After the dean of graduate studies approved my acceptance and funding, I received the official acceptance email. I accepted it, and I am now wondering about the next steps. My best bet, like TMP suggested, is to email the graduate co-ordinator.
  9. Thanks TMP. I will email the graduate coordinator, but before I do that, I really appreciate advice from others on their experiences. I'm still a bit shy about sending emails to prospective professors.
  10. I guess I will add more... I went to Sasquatch music festival in 2011 and met Foster the People. At the festival I made friends with someone from Spokane who was a huge Bright Eyes fan like myself, so on my drive back to Canada I stopped in his city for a Bright Eyes show and Conor Oberst crowd surfed over top of me. I helped push him along, but if I could meet anyone it would be him. I met up with this friend a year or two later in Portland to watch Desaparecidos, one of Conor Oberst's side projects. There was an after party and I met Denver Dalley and Ian McElroy from the band. Denver Dalley and I made friends and we followed one another on instagram. Ian McElroy and I goofed off quite a bit and took lots of pictures, but he kept telling me he was Conor's cousin and I did not believe him. After my trip, my bf, who is also a Bright Eyes and Desaparecidos fan, told me that Ian is actually Conor's cousin. Needless to say, no one will care about this post unless they also are crazed Bright Eyes fans.
  11. I'm wondering what happens after you accept an offer? I accepted an offer a week ago, and the application webpage reads "offer accepted by student." Will there be anything formal arriving in the mail? I also wonder when I'm supposed to register for courses? I received my official acceptance letter in the mail awhile ago, but now I'm confused about the next steps. Perhaps I am being impatient.
  12. Thanks Landru! I will send you a PM.
  13. My undergrad mentor, who supervised both my independent study and thesis, was not too fond of supervising topics on Nazism and the Holocaust. After my independent study, I wanted to continue studying Nazism but he suggested Leninism. I was a bit conflicted but agreed, and do not regret it. He just retired this summer and his mom was a nurse during WWII, and she experienced the end of the war and liberating a concentration camp. He rarely talked about it in class, and hated supervising topics concerning Nazism and the Holocaust. However, I'm thankful to have some undergrad research experience in both German and Russian political history. I'm happy to know there is someone else on grad cafe with similar interests. Let me know if you publish any articles, as I'd be interested to read your work.
  14. I'm really interested in the history of fascism in Britain, and the British Union of Fascists... As that is Sir Oswald Mosley in my profile pic. LOL. I covered the Populist movement in Russia for my thesis on Leninism, and would like to read more, especially about Nikolai Chernyshevsky. However, I have so many books to read and Russian Populism is on the back burner for now. That is awesome you got to study in Germany, I have yet to travel there. I will definitely be visiting in the next couple of years for primary source research.
  15. Most of the Canadian schools I applied too, and I am a history major, required an honours thesis or equivalent. If you do not have an honours thesis, an independent study counts. I applied with both a thesis and independent study. I also had two research internships, but in different fields. I do not know for sure however, this is just my experience in applying.
  16. I would also love to teach a course on the history of Communism... I did my undergrad thesis on the ideological origins of Leninism and really enjoyed it. My proposed research topic for my applications is to examine the evolution of Communism in East Germany between the Stalinist and post-Stalinist periods. I also would enjoy teaching a course on the Volkisch movement in Germany and the ideological origins of Nazism.
  17. Last year I attended an undergraduate history conference and one session was dedicated to women's fashion and make-up during the First, and Second World Wars. Needless to say, it garnered one of the largest crowds of all the sessions throughout the weekend long conference.
  18. In elementary school I began reading children's literature about the holocaust such as Number the Stars. I also loved Canadian children's author Kit Pearson, especially The Guests of War Trilogy: The Sky is Falling, Looking at the Moon, and The Lights Go On Again, which chronicled the life of a brother and sister who were sent to Canada from Britain during the Second World War. I wrote Kit Pearson a letter when I was young and she responded with a hand written post-card.
  19. Thanks, I don't have enough time to finish a professional certificate, otherwise I would definitely pursue it! I believe my current employment helped my applications, as I began the position as an intern and was then hired on full-time. I also work from home quite frequently, and I used one of my undergrad professors as a reference for my internship, which he mentioned my professional success in his letter of recommendation for me. Anyways, this was a suggestion for the OP. Writing skills can pay well, you just have to branch out. I research and write about a mapping project, and I know very little about maps.
  20. My grandma got me this book as a gift when I was in elementary school! I still have it on my book shelf, although it is pretty beat up! I loved this book as a kid!
  21. I am attending school next fall, that was just my own personal back up plan!
  22. Sure, I will pm you and then you can ask me whatever questions you have.
  23. Check the results page and perhaps some applicants have listed their stats. http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=York+University
  24. It is not impossible to get a librarian job! Just work really hard, search out experiences, and stay dedicated! Good luck.
