  1. I'm still in my undergrad but have a job as a technical writer for government. If I were not accepted into a program next fall, I was considering doing a graduate certificate in professional writing. I know technical writing does not sound very exciting, but it is a start and can open the door to many other writing positions. Sorry to hear about the outcome of your applications this year.
  2. I combed through the department page and it said funding is provided by letter to incoming students through either scholarships or t.a. positions. Thank you Chiqui74 and kotov for your responses.
  3. This is an old question, but one I was wondering about as well... Can anyone shed some light on this?
  4. I received an acceptance yesterday with really good funding and I cried like a little baby. I called my mom and she thought something terrible had happened. She was incredibly happy for me but also told me to pull myself together. Haha.
  5. My research area focuses on the history of Communism in East Germany.
  6. Never mind my last post, that school accepted me with funding! Woohoo!
  7. I had a rejection earlier this week, and while watching The Theory of Everything, feeling depressed about maybe not getting in anywhere... I checked my email and got accepted to the university of Guelph with scholarship and funding through three t.a. positions! I am so incredibly happy and thankful! Perfect moment for me to receive my first acceptance.
  8. I'm applying for my masters. I received an email from one school stating: "Dear XXXXXXX, I am the graduate coordinator for the Department of History at the University of XXXXXXX. I am writing to let you know that our department's graduate committee met to discuss this year's MA applications, and there is a lot of interest in your file. The committee will meet again in the last week of February and make their final decision regarding admissions. Our offers will then have to be approved by the Office of Graduate Studies here on campus. This process can take a few weeks. In the meantime, do not hesitate to email me if you have any questions or concerns. Regards, XXXXXXXX" I am dying to hear a response. This email was hopeful, but is also killing me. I received another email from the school's graduate admissions office stating they received all of my documents. This annoyed me as I applied over a month ago. Any advice on what this email means? I don't want to get my hopes up, but my hopes are high...
  9. Not sure if anyone watches Graceland, but my aunty was friends with Brandon Jay McLaren's parents, and as a much younger toddler in comparison to him, I supposedly beat him up... My mom said he was really nice and I was a toddler experiencing the terrible two's...
  10. This isn't even fair. Meeting someone famous when you live in the far north of Canada is a huge deal... Unless it is an NHL player. LOL.
  11. What other schools are you applying too? Also, for a Masters or PhD?
  12. I'm a history student, but I worked for an English professor, and I had to write biographies on Canadian writers.... I had to email amazing Canadian writers quite often... and pretty much interview them over email... it was very weird. Weird in that I actually had access to their emails.... Haha.
  13. I wandered around San Francisco at 3 am once, and met Ben from MGMT. Best late night adventure ever. He was super nice.
  14. I love Ne-Yo, that is impressive!
  15. I am experiencing extreme anxiety right now, I thought I'd start a fun and irrelevant thread, where we could mention some celebrity run-ins, or even awesome academics who we have met. I won a meet and greet when I was younger with the Black Eyed Peas, I am not a big fan, but Fergie was super sweet and I loved meeting her.
  16. I just received my first rejection, from a school I had a POI agree to be my supervisor... I'm having wine...
  17. I am from Victoria but live in Alberta. I am more interested in political history than social history, but thank you for the recommendation. Although Guelph is a smaller city/school (?), I am impressed with their history club/society jointly run with the other Tri-University schools. The social activities they plan, such as a canoe trip and curling, makes the program more attractive to me.
  18. Are you applying for M.A. or PhD programs?
  19. I also applied to academic and public libraries over a five year period after working in an academic library. I also worked in interlibrary loans, as well as other areas of the library! Anyways, I never had any luck even getting an interview. My friend also wanted to be a librarian, and applied everywhere in our city and only gained one interview, and was not hired. This experience alone, having trouble finding even a page position while a student with library and archive experience, shows how easy it is to be turned away from the profession.
  20. we need more canadian action... anyone???
  21. Hey! I applied to Dalhousie as well! What is your research area?
  22. Just wondering if anyone else shares this trait? My evening "relaxation" consists of rereading my SOP, CV, and a LOR a professor gave to me before submitting it to my programs. I keep grading my application to no avail, since I have no idea what other people's applications look like.
  23. I have thought about that outcome... and I know a rejection would ruin my day but I still check! I also check my postal mailbox everyday... I'm a Canadian applicant, so my waiting time has been about two weeks from deadline. Some American programs are taking forever! I truly feel for you guys who haven't heard anything!
