Caltech vs Stanford vs UCB for PhD in Systems
doomination replied to Dawnbreaker's topic in Decisions, Decisions
with this info in mind, it seems like caltech might be the best option for you. At least in chemE, they have the best academic placement of any school, and it's vastly the best when you normalize for the size of the school. Best of luck! -
doctordestiny: roughly 0%. HM for me too. Didn't get any useful feedback either, all of my reviews were very positive.

Deciding between two spectacular programs
doomination replied to tulips's topic in Decisions, Decisions
which faculty was it? I've emailed a couple -- some get back immediately, one never replied. I know many are abroad at the moment as well, conferences and all that. You might want to email a grad student in their group and ask if they are around at the moment. -
just officially accepted Stanford! I've never lived on a coast before, so this should be interesting.

DENIED. Ah well, there's always next year. Congrats to the winners, great job!

I'm going to try to get a 2 bed 1 bath in Lyman due to its proximity to the chemical engineering building.

Deciding between two spectacular programs

Come to stanford! I'll be going there this fall in the same program as you. Really though, like a poster above said, you cannot choose wrong. Especially since you have a fellowship! I'll tell my story: After going to minnesota last summer, I was convinced I would go there for grad school. I even remember telling my advisor (before applying) that if I had to choose to not apply to one of the schools I'm applied to, it would be stanford. I'm very glad I did because like you, I fell in love with it during the visit. The faculty were inspiring and the environment was great. The grad students are valued rather than used. It will be very hard for me to send the decline email to UMN, but these things must be done! -
E/VG x3 -- honorable mention, senior undergrad. Definitely re-applying next year. Congrats to those who got money!

good luck everyone!

Will likely be attending!

Crossroads: Accepted in Two Different Fields
doomination replied to crumbcake666's topic in Decisions, Decisions
in chemE we hear horror stories of people getting nowhere with a chemistry phd because there are so many people entering grad school in chemistry. I agree with the posters here though, it depends what you want out of it. A lot of research in the physical side of chemistry is shared between chemE and chemistry. So if that's your thing, you'd still be able to do the same research. -
on your US News link, Texas A&M is #18, though it's worth noting that these rankings are pretty dubious in my opinion. The NRC does a better job, though it's admittedly less satisfying since they don't give explicit rankings: http://chronicle.com/article/NRC-Rankings-Overview-/124726/ On this website, A&M's S-rank is between 36 and 70, and their R-rank is between 15 and 24. The website gives details on what those numbers mean.

How are everyone's visit weekends going? I'm almost glad I didn't get into Berkeley or MIT. These weekends are exhausting, and I'm only taking the minimum amount of courses to be full time. Future applicants, keep this in mind! I wanted to apply to a lot of places so I could tour the country for free, but now I definitely wouldn't do it.

You'll have to somehow convince your current PI to write a strong letter of rec to these higher ranked institutions.

I just visited Princeton last weekend, they showed us dorms at the new and old grad college. The old grad college seems to have a lot more rooms that require you to walk through someone else's room to get to. They seem to be comparable in price, and neither have air conditioning. The apartments are probably a lot cheaper than the dorms because they aren't as nice - but they are typical apartments. If you've lived in a flat near a college campus, it's probably very similar to Lawrence apartments. I'm torn between wanting to live in the OGC and trying to get an apartment.. On the one hand, having a meal plan would be convenient for the first year course load. On the other hand, air conditioning...

Switching from ChemE to Nuclear for a PhD?
doomination replied to Argon's topic in Decisions, Decisions
If you leave chemE it will make my potential life as an academic in chemE easier, so go to nukeE! In all seriousness, I think you should go to the MIT nuclear program. If it was practical for me, I would have applied to math PhDs rather than chemE, for similar reasons. You have the opportunity to switch fields NOW - which you will likely not get again. -
I'll reply since I spent a summer at UT Austin's PGE department. If your end goal is industry, then I think UT Austin would be a better choice. They have nearly 100% job placement, even for MS students. So you'd be fast-tracked to a job with just a two year degree rather than a 5 year PhD. If your goal is not industry, then definitely UCSB would be a better choice. From what I observed, UT Austin PGE has a nearly 0% academic position placement. So really it depends on what you want out of it. The PGE department has a lot of money, so depending on how strong of an applicant you are, funding is not out of the question for a master's student. Though, with oil prices low, perhaps funding is also low? Not sure.

gorki: thanks so much for the help in this thread. Do you happen to know if children of Princeton graduate alumni are considered "legacy" for the purpose of undergraduate admission? I will be visiting Princeton this weekend, very excited.
-
That's quite unfortunate. I'd be pretty upset if that happened to me.
-
How was the berkeley visit everyone? Someone from my school who got in said they had a pretty exciting weekend planned for you guys. I also just heard from a student at stanford with more details on what the visit will be. Looks cool! I've never seen an ocean before so this will be nice.

That is a shame. I'd say I should have retaken the GRE, but the more I think about it, there wasn't one particular prof at MIT that really stood out to me (not even sour grapes, I've been thinking this since I applied). And I am already frustrated with the amount of money ETS was able to extract from me. At least we all have some great choices!
-
rejected by MIT, oh well, time to move on!

I saw on the website that the NGC and OGC are 9 month contracts .. where do these people stay during the summer then?
