  1. Hey, I know I've PM'd a few people on here about UW-Madison, but I figured having our own thread would be helpful. If you've been accepted (or waitlisted) at Madison: • Did you attend the open house this Saturday, March 14th? If not, have you visited Madison? UW? Goodnight Hall? • Where are you from and where did you do your undergrad? • Is UW-Madison your first choice and/or are you definitely accepting? • What are the factors influencing your choice? • If you've decided to go, what are your housing plans? I'll go first. • I went to the open house this weekend and was really impressed. Loved the city, the campus, and the program. • I'm from Kansas and am about to graduate from KU. • I was accepted to KU's program, which is really good and much cheaper for me, but I have fallen pretty hard for UW-Madison. I think it would be better for me to go somewhere else for grad school. I definitely think I'd benefit a lot more in every way (except financially) than if I stayed here at KU. • I toured this place called The French House, but I think I'd like to live somewhere less undergrad-ish, and possibly room with another person or other people in the program.
  2. I was interested to see this thread because of a conversation I just had with one of my friends. She's a fellow CSD undergrad at KU and both of us are playing the waiting game, so of course grad school constantly comes up. Anyway, she said something like, "Being named [her distinctly Indonesian full-name] better score me some points, otherwise my parents might as well have named me Susie Jones or something" - she's hilarious and we were joking around, but she was definitely serious about her background being an asset. We went on to talk about our personal statements and how several SoP prompts were looking specifically for multicultural backgrounds/ cultural competencies and/or multilingual skills. I'm definitely not someone who thinks affirmative action has fixed things for POC in the US -- you would have to be living in a bunker to think that with everything that's bubbling to the surface the past year or so -- but I have to admit that I am under the impression that in this specific field, multiculturalism and bilingualism are huge assets. If anyone reads the ASHA Leader, their February 2014 issue was all about the demand for bilingual and culturally competent SLPs, which Eudonte mentioned. So I'm really interested by the perspectives expressed in this thread, many of which conflict with my impressions. Possibly both things are happening at the same time, depending on the location and the program?
  3. Yes to the serious pros & cons lists. I got accepted to my alma mater yesterday, just as I'm about to go to an accepted students open house for my reach school. No complaints, but there are tough decisions ahead.
  4. I feel the same way! I was just accepted to KU, where I'm doing my undergrad, and it's a great program. But I think would really like to go to school somewhere else! That's why the schools I applied to are all over the place. Tough decisions ahead.
  5. Congratulations Jen, that is fantastic!
  6. Hello! Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of UW-Madison's French House? Or even just hearsay? I was recently accepted to Madison's grad program in speech-language pathology, but I've studied French throughout undergrad and I'm interested retaining what I know. I've also read (on this thread and others) that the housing scene in Madison is pretty crappy, so I'm thinking this little residential community could be a good option for me. Their website is uwfrenchhouse.org Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!
  7. Twinguy, I feel like you might not have seen my post from earlier: I only say this again because HOLY CRAP what is going on there?? 6 students a year. 3 years in a row. When most schools have 0. That's insane!
  8. Hey, I didn't do the PPIs either! But you know, their website also says that they prefer to do interviews, and from the results page they haven't done any interviews in the last few years. So I don't know. I haven't heard anything else from them yet.
  9. Yeah phaedra, I agree with moosemoose (haha, what a weird sentence). I looked at their website and there's been 6-7 students failing to graduate each year. That is crazy - I've never seen anything in the 80% range - I think the most I've seen for other schools has been 2 students not graduating, and it was never a consistent thing. Make me really curious about what's going on over there
  10. Just out of curiosity, may I ask what school A and school B are?
  11. University of Oregon's program is pretty education-focused. I believe they have you do a semester-long school externship (although that's not all that uncommon). And the department is actually within the School of Education.
  12. Congrats oneshot! Your first choice - that's fantastic! I am really happy for you I also just got accepted to SLU! Have you toured the campus or anything? From their Facebook page I know the department's been under construction and everything is new now!
  13. This one is debatably in bad taste ? but gets points for creativity. Syracuse University Speech Pathology, Masters (F15) Rejected via E-mail on 4 Mar 2015 I 4 Mar 2015 Mr. and Mrs. Mind were mourning and worried for Private Application, who was reported to be missing in action during the Operation Admissions 2015 offensive for an entire 2.5 months. They have now learned he did not make it. A service will be made in Private Application's honor. IT HURTS SO BAD!
  14. I just saw that three people posted results for SLU today - two acceptances and a wait list. Of course, it sent me into a frenzy of checking my email, the results page and the applyweb portal. Is anyone else currently doing the same? Or has anyone on here heard from SLU? If you have information about how they notify people (in waves, or what), I'd appreciate it!
  15. I'm one of those who have heard back from Madison - it's the only Wisconsin school I applied to. I'm going to their open house in two weeks. @rlywrmn I remember asking you about Madison a few months ago! Do you have any pointers for when I visit? (Besides dressing warmly, haha)
  16. @MangoSmoothie You're right! I think that's a good idea, so I started one here:
  17. It's about time for this year's admissions thread! Thanks to @MangoSmoothie for pointing that out. So, here we go. I was accepted to UW-Madison a couple weeks ago, and today I RSVP'd to their open house invitation. I haven't heard back from my other schools yet, but I've seen a fair amount of UMD acceptances. According to the results page posts from previous years, people could start hearing from SLU any day now. And March is just around the corner! What is everyone's status so far?
  18. Such a relief to know that regardless of your other apps, you're in! Congrats ShayyDee!
  19. I don't know anything about NOVA, but can I just say that this all sounds ridiculous? The majority of applicants are either finishing up their Bachelor's or their last pre-reqs. I thought all programs go ahead with things and just give a disclaimer that if you don't complete the requirements your acceptance is revoked. How does NOVA manage to fill up their class each year if everyone has to harass them about this?
  20. Apparently that's happening with most of the acceptances to UMD so far. I have the opposite situation right now where I've gotten an acceptance email but the portal still says "Pending."
  21. Thanks Mahiray! I got an email from Maureen with the subject "UW-Madison Offer of Admission." She said I'd been recommended for admission and invited me to an open house in March. There were two attachments -- an invite to the open house, and an "acceptance decision sheet" that they want back before April 15th. She also said she's mailing a hard copy of my decision letter. Thank you pmarie! Unfortunately I'm not sure how they do it -- I'm sorry I can't be of more help! However, for UMD College Park I did go through and look at the different dates/waves. UMD acceptances started showing up on the results page last week, so of course I started freaking out. Here is the info I hunted down for UMD on the results page, in case you'd like to get on the same level of obsession for UW-Madison.
  22. Thank you! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and everyone on this forum!
  23. Guys I got my first acceptance! I'm so relieved, I can stop torturing myself now!
  24. As Chandru said, people who apply to one school have intelligent and practical reasons for doing so. And what is the hurt in asking about funding? I think it's a great question, and I can see several reasons why someone might have information to share in response - like having discussed funding with someone who has served on an admissions committee. In this case I don't think you have any reason to have said something about these posts. But just in general, even if you are genuinely perplexed by something someone says, that doesn't mean you aren't being rude. It all depends on how you phrase what you say. It might be helpful for you to think, "How would I react if someone said this to me?" before you say something. (@Chandru1 sorry for the downvote, I was aiming for the green but I guess I missed! :/ )
  25. Why are you being so rude?
