Shh, you're blowing my cover as to how I'm so knowledgable about this topic

Here is the list of courses offered this summer at USU in COMD: https://rcde.usu.edu/coursesearch/results.cfm?q=comd I also emailed and asked, you might have to waive the prerequisites (though you've probably taken them, but I didn't, and you won't have taken them through USU) by emailing heather.humphreys@usu.edu after you register. Apparently applying/registering is pretty easy, but you might have to call and confirm with them if they don't get back to you within a couple of days. I haven't done it yet though.

Idk why you're being high and mighty about researching, the point of this forum is to help people going through this nerve-wracking process. I doubt what someone wants to hear after finding out they didn't receive any acceptances this season is "you have to do research cause I did, maybe I'll help a little if you PM me" Anyways, mo~, if you do end up thinking about spring admissions, here's a partial list (copied from this thread: ): Eastern NM University- 9/1 LIU Brooklyn-11/1 Lehman College (CUNY) 10/1 Kent State 11/1 Marquette 11/15 Nazareth 10/1 St. John's University 10/1 Valdosta State University 7/1 University of Texas, Pan American- 2/4 University of Texas, Dallas - 9/15 University of South Dakota- 10/15 University of Rhode Island - 10/15 University of Northern Iowa - 9/15 University of Nebraska, Omaha- 9/1 University of Missouri -10/15 University of Louisiana Monroe - 9/25 University of Kansas -10/15 University of Central Florida - 10/1 SUNY Cortland 7/1 Southeastern Louisiana University - 3/1 Penn State -2/1

Utah State University will offer it online this summer for around $1,000

How are you deciding which program to go to?
neucool replied to moosemoose's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
All of those pretty much! I took care of location by only applying to schools in places I would actually be 100% happy living in. Second is money- I'm ruling one out for sure because I received no merit scholarship, and would be 60-70k more than the other schools. Now I'm down to two schools, one which'll be about 30k total tuition and another which would be 20k... at this point, I'm going to both of those accepted students events and choose between the two based on gut feeling. -
Institutional racism is alive and well. There are enormous barriers to access graduate education, and considering SLP is a fairly "niche" field, many people haven't even heard about it unless they've had personal contact with SLPs in some capacity- something that is also fairly classed/racialized.
-
28 schools?! holy moly. Well, it sounds like you probably cast a wide net, so don't give up hope yet.

Teaching? Aba assistant?
neucool replied to SundayMatinee's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
You could look into being a special education aide, that would give you some good experience and doesn't require any additional schooling (and you'd be earning money rather than paying it). Also maybe look into ESL or literacy tutoring, paraprofessional work at non-school agencies, even nannying or babysitting work. -
Awesome, thanks!
-
Oh, good to know. Do I need to ask them in advance to waive them, or just... register? (By the way, for people searching in the future: I did seem to find an option through SUNY New Paltz, but USU is cheaper)
-
I sort of doubt this works in our field at the masters level. I kind of feel like they aren't going to fight for individual people by offering more funding just to make sure you come. But, I could be wrong, pure speculation here!

Is there anywhere I can take this online this summer without prerequisites? USU seems to require anatomy of speech/hearing mechanisms first, but that is another course I'm taking this summer as a pre-requisite for whichever grad program I get into. It seems impossible for an out-of-fielder to find what they need to take this summer!

I just got offered a hefty scholarship at MGH, which made my decision a lot harder than it had been (I'd been pretty much sure I was going to go with Emerson). I got a really good feeling when I interviewed at Emerson, and I haven't visited MGH yet, so I'll have to see how I feel at the open house...

Which Schools Look More at GPA/GRE
neucool replied to RMott's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Work with children / research is more applicable than you think. Find ways to tie past experiences to what you want to achieve as an SLP, and center your statement of purpose around that. My impression has been that while many programs do care about your resume/experiences, they are particularly important in helping you craft an engaging SOP. So, if you focus on making your SOP really great with the experiences you do have, you're probably in a great position. -

I just checked my MGH portal and found my decision, I was accepted- it said that I was selected for a scholarship and would receive an email about that in the next week or so. -
I just checked my fellowship portal and found my decision there (I was selected for a Presidential Fellowship!) so some of you who have been accepted might have some good news there too!

Fall Boston University applicants
neucool replied to kiran.khialani's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I was waitlisted- not really surprised since I know my interview did not go well, but not really sad since I was leaning towards Emerson anyways. Good luck all! -
Well, both of my acceptances so far have said "you must confirm within 2 (or 3) weeks or by April 15th, whichever is later". So as long as they don't get back to you after April 15th, you should be okay!
-
Yes, this was the first time I checked (around 4:30 EST). I haven't made a decision k1772, but I did really love the program and the city when I visited, so I'm leaning heavily towards it! I have a good gut feeling about Emerson, so that says something important, I think...
-
Check your portals, my decision (acceptance!) was there when I just checked. (I interviewed 2/22) A nice surprise, good luck all.

Found this post from 2013 that was helpful: I'm in the same boat though, I don't know much!

It's possible that they are sending out multiple rounds of acceptances a few days apart, it looks like they did that last year. I'd also love to hear anything anybody knows about NYU as I haven't had a chance to visit and don't know much more than what was on their website. -

Yay! I got my first acceptance today and I'm really happy. It isn't my top choice (the program is a bit more long/expensive than the others) but it's a huge weight off to know that I'll somewhere for sure. I interviewed at BU/Emerson last weekend too, and I'm anxious from hearing back from my others soon hopefully!
