SLP Interviews! What are they like?
neucool replied to SLPosteriorCricoarytenoid's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I would tell them? I mean, personally I wouldn't lie. I doubt they'll ask in an interview though, the schools that wanted to know for me asked about that on the application itself. -
I did it all back in November to submit by Dec 1st, and had no issues. I think I was one of the lucky ones though. For me, it definitely made it easier because I had 3 schools that used it, so I saved a lot of time.

BU definitely impressed on the facilities front. There was a very long tour of all the research labs, they made it clear that they had lots of access to medical imaging equipment and pretty much anything else you'd expect from a large research institution. I don't remember the names of the faculty I interviewed with, they were by no means unfriendly but I found them a little bit stiff/distant. The students seemed pretty stressed and overwhelmed, but they were pretty friendly too. -
Emerson was a joy to visit. Every student I spoke to was extremely friendly and down-to-earth, they all seemed like real, generally happy, humans (rather than at BU, where the students seemed extremely stressed and slightly robotic??). The two faculty members I interviewed were similarly very kind and made the interview experience great. Their facilities are nice, less impressive than BU, but they certainly seem to do the job. Far less emphasis on research, more emphasis on clinical experience. Students made lots of references to feeling like the program was tight-knit and family-like, that they supported each other and that the faculty was extremely supportive of them and that their doors were always open to talk to students. Also, April?! Oh no. That's in so long...!

It looks pretty mild. Doubt it will be cancel-worthy

So if everyone else is scheduling interviews..

Some schools have multiple waves of interviews, or notify in waves like Arcanelady said. -
Fall Boston University applicants

Yeah, I'm in the Northeast and the weather is stressing me out big time. :/ I'm not as worried about travel because I'm taking the train (from NY) but I am def worried about school closure. It would suck to spend the time and $$ just to have to Skype from the hostel... Although I'd be even more anxious if I was one of y'all coming from farther/flying in! -
I got the official email today as well. To people worried about Skype interviews... I think they know that meeting people in person will just let them put their best foot forward- who can deny that Skype is always a little awkward, especially for something somewhat high stakes like this. I don't think they'll "count it against you" in the sense that they'll give admission preference to people who choose to interview in person JUST because they could go in person, but they probably know you'll make a better impression than if you did Skype.

Nope, they don't.

I got an invite too, curious to know as well. I'm nervous! My guess is that they are probably relatively short interviews though, like Emerson. -
Yep, it was my 3rd. I was sweating bullets thinking it wouldn't get in on time (although I know that a LOR a day late wouldn't make or break my application)
-
I submitted Dec 1st, and Emerson received my materials Dec 9th except for one LOR which they received Jan 5th. So I submitted early, but my application wasn't 'complete' until the deadline, technically, so I have no idea if they looked at my materials before that or not.
-
That I've heard depends on school too. Some redistribute to other accepted students, and for others, the money just goes poof
-
I applied through CSDCAS.
-
Mine just appeared in credentials for Sunday 2/22! They're rolling them out gradually it seems, nobody panic yet. And I did read somewhere that some people were accepted without interviews, though I don't remember where.
-
Could be the day they start posting admissions decisions. Mine works, but no interview for now.
-
Just a heads up for those not in the Northeast- we are about to get slammed by our third snow event in a couple weeks, so I wouldn't be surprised if things are a little delayed (and continue to be delayed) due to that.... Anyways, that's what I keep telling myself as I nervously keep checking the portals.
-
If they wanted to know where else you were applying, they would've just asked on their application. I had a few schools that did.
-
After you submit, your main portal will say "currently verifying: Jan 1" or whatever date they are currently working on (referring to the submission date of the applications they are currently processing).

Demographics & Diversity in SLP
neucool replied to combustiblecake's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
If I were to guess, I'd also say that this is due to the marginalization of groups that results in many people of color not getting the speech services they need (in part BECAUSE of how white the people who make those decisions are). Less kids who get speech, less of them plus siblings/friends/parents who ever even realize this is a career option, like many have said. I think this is a huge issue in the field, though. Racial bias is real, for one, and additionally, it also means a big lack of bilingual SLPs, as well as bicultural SLPs. A field that requires interaction with people needs to be diverse as the people it serves. -
Being an immigrant could be an experience you could talk about, but if you don't think that that'll be compelling, then I'd just skip it. I'm sure they get plenty of "trying to be diverse, but not really" statements, and they know them when they see them... I have no idea what they use them for, but my guess would be for scholarships and maybe for admissions decisions in the case of a borderline applicant.

What is recommenders' general preference?
neucool replied to mseph's topic in Letters of Recommendation
I sent them all at once, one recommender took advantage of this and submitted them to all 3 places at once (only applying to 5 schools and 3 are through a centralized application), another only to the one that was due first and hasn't submitted the others yet... I would send them all, and then if for some reason they can't find the link there is usually a way to re-send pretty easily. -
No. https://portal.csdcas.org/csdcasHelpPages/instructions-and-faq/transcripts/sending-u-s-canadian-transcripts/index.html
