  1. So....why do you want to leave your current situation?
  2. Pardon me, but it wasn't made abundantly clear that you wouldn't write them in - especially given the questions you were asking.
  3. A paper is a paper. You got something published in undergrad, and professors like that. I'd be more concerned about what I quoted - 2 bold-faced excuses in about 200 words. They'll be impressed by your research, but they won't give a shit about your annoying probability professor or how you didn't have time to submit the paper to bigger publications.
  4. Magoosh is the real deal. I also downloaded a GRE Prep App for my Samsung Galaxy S5. Practice sections and explanations for each chapter of math and verbal, a HUGE explanation of the writing portion, and extra vocab words. It was only $15 for full access, which blows the textbook prices out of the water. 290 isn't bad for winging it - you should be at least a little proud of yourself!
  5. I think that since you've already established a rapport with that professor, your best bet would be to both retake the GRE and keep in contact with him. Even if the score doesn't get there, his reservations about your abilities (if he actually has any) could be mitigated. He'll also know you see your score as deficient and want to improve, which is a great quality in an already qualified student. The application will definitely reach him. If you've emailed back and forth a couple times, I'd follow up with him once you send in the full application. Something simple, just telling him once again how excited you are or something like that. Hope I helped!
  6. Trying here because I might've posted in the wrong forum. Anyone try a post-bacc program? Would appreciate your thoughts on them. PM me if it helps! :D

  7. I'm not following. What's the chain of events, here? Did you: 1. Contact him with GRE score 2. [No response] 3. Contact him again with resume 4. He wants you there OR Did you: 1. Contact him with resume 2. He wants you there 3. Update him with GRE 4. [No response] Depending on the order, it'd sort of affect the advice I'd give you.
  8. If you feel like you're failing, you should snap out of it. The mentality of a grad student should be ruthlessly pursuing excellence until a professor tells you that you've failed. If you're actually failing, maybe grad school simply isn't for you. </coldhardtruth>
  9. Hey all, I'm eventually pursuing food science in grad school, but I thought I'd post this question in here, since post-bacc's seem to be much more common in pre-med or pre-professional situations. I'd just like some feedback from people who are in a post-bacc, have considered going to one, have completed one and moved on, etc. I'm not entirely sure if it's the right thing for me to do. I studied a similar field (chemistry), but my grades were very bad, so it'd be a good opportunity to showcase my talents, I'm sure. At the same time, I don't know if there's a huge difference between one of these programs and, say, taking prerequisites in community college. There are about a half dozen post-bacc nutrition science programs--Oregon State, San Jose State, and McGill (Canada), to name a few. Not exactly the same thing as food science, but for what a post-bacc is, definitely the courseload I'd need to put POI's at ease. Thanks in advance, dudes!
  10. Take it question-by-question. If you don't know the answer after a minute or two, skip it and guess at the end of the section. You get the same penalty for blank answers as you do for wrong ones. Also, don't expect to do awesome if you already know you should have studied more.
  11. It wasn't. I was sort of trying to make a joke. IUP is in PA, and IU/IUPUI are in Indiana. It's just funny to me.
  12. Google works. Here's what US News thinks the top 100 looks like: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-science-schools/computer-science-rankings Choosing a "top university" would of course depend on your discipline.
  13. How the FUCK are some people who post on here gonna survive in grad school? Can't even search for your own programs - just gotta spew out your stats and ask "WELL?!? CAN I GET IN OR NOT?! ZOMG SO NERVOUS #GRADLYFE". Is it laziness? Do you save your strength for researching things that are lofty enough and "worth your time"? I know that's how R&D people act when they send me stuff to look up, as I'm a mere QC Analyst. What's sad is I know as much as they do when it comes to the formulations. I mean most of y'all are cool, but come on!
  14. I'd recommend doing three things before waiting for a response: 1. Copy your topic title without the question mark. 2. Paste it into your Google search bar. 3. Hit enter. Edit: I did these three steps (since I feel bad just scolding people on here--it's not like I have 500+ posts). These are the first 5 schools that came up: 1. UChicago 2. Boston U 3. Penn 4. Columbia 5. Harvard
  15. Upon further review, it seems grade inflation and the like are pretty irrelevant. It makes sense, too, since programs are looking for a good fit as well as a nice-looking class profile. I get that there are other reasons they wouldn't take a guy with a low GPA, but I'm speaking as if I've already aced all of my prerequisities. I have another question, though: How worth it would a post-bacc be? They have, like, half a dozen across the country and Canada -- Oregon State, McGill (CAN), San Jose State, maybe a few lesser-known schools. Could I use that to up my chances, or would it just be financially impractical as compared to community college while getting the same job done?
  16. Work/P90X/Study for GRE/Sleep. Next ... 6 ... weeks.

      P90X? I haven't heard that in a while!

My friends and I did P90X3 and we started the new (old) program Wednesday. Works just like it did a few years ago! ;)

  17. Two things: 1. The last post in this thread is from 2010. 2. I'm currently studying for the GRE, and I have a plan together to be ready by December 15th ( I want to take it before Christmas). It's honestly not that hard. I started last week, so that'd be about 6 weeks. It takes more or less time for certain people to feel comfortable with the material--but then again, I'd never ask the question "how long does it take to study" for that exact reason, so I'm not sure what sort of answer you're looking for.
  18. That's not a good way to think about relationships at all. Imagine if the guy who eventually took a chance on dating you realized you were fishing for a relationship just to overcome your jealousy issues; do you think he'd stick around even if your ass was really nice? In all seriousness, though, in order for a relationship to be fulfilling at all, getting into one at any cost has to be the farthest thing from your mind. The best ones just sort of "happen". It's not as much about labelling something as a relationship as it is enjoying your time with your SO. If you make it about labels and petty crap, the other person is more than likely going to sense it. All due respect here, but is there anything else you think about or take pride in as a person? You surely can't be dwelling on this stuff all the time. That would suck the life out of me. If it were me, and my cohort wouldn't shut the fuck up about her new husband, I'd try to learn more about her other hobbies (before she was married, obviously, lol) and talk to her about them. If she notices you deflecting every time she brings up her husband, she may be smart enough to lay off the gushing when you're around.
  19. Being a Boiler, I'd at least like to note that Indiana - Bloomington is commonly referred to as "IU", whereas Indianapolis is "IUPUI" - since it's an integrated branch campus for both Purdue and Indiana. No one who went to Indiana schools dares screw that up. I don't think being in Indiana Township, PA counts as Indiana, though. I grew up in the Pittsburgh area, so I know IUP pretty well. I have a lot of friends there and at Clarion--I've heard good things about Cal U PA as well!
  20. Edit: Eh, that was in kind of poor taste. Just use the search bar, though. Seriously.
  21. You should post this in the computer science section if you want answers. My suggestion would be to look at class profiles. Your Q score sounds low-to-average, and the V sounds about average. I'm not CS, though, so I don't know how far off I might be. I'm just saying something besides "move this post".
  22. Even though it's not very good, the topic sentence is the first sentence. It previews the rest of the paragraph, which is describing reasons why people could be uncomfortable with the projection of scientific ideas as fact.
  23. For the US institutions, it'll depend on the GRE (since your English seems good enough). You're right on the fence as of now, since your academic credentials are good but you don't have prior research experience, which may or may not deter the more esteemed schools.
  24. You have a quote button on your laptop? That's impressive. If you mean clicking "Quote" here in the forum isn't working, I'd update Flash. If it still doesn't work, I'd use a different browser. If it still doesn't work, I'd restart your computer for updates. And, after all that, THEN your laptop is for sure dying. This is an interesting read as someone who's trying to make a case for himself to get in somewhere. Good luck to all of you.
