  1. Where are the best places to search for these jobs to build work experience before applying for schools? I want at least 1 more year of experience. I only have a BA and one year Peace Corps. I want to shoot for SAIS/Georgetown/GWU/HKS... etc. I'm interested in foreign affairs, which is vague, I know, but I just want to get my foot in the door.
  2. Yeah, Heinz is attractive indeed. I would equate it to Harris. I'm going to scratch WW, but not HKS. Why would I scratch a dream school if I have some chance of getting in? I meant GPPI when talking about Georgetown. I'm just worried I'm not going to get anywhere.
  3. Yes, Sanford and Ford seem quant heavy, and I'm sure one can tailor their schedule to be quant-heavy but the schools I highlighted in yellow, to me, seem more prestigious and have a higher percentage of grads getting private sector jobs. But I can be swayed. I'll probably have to really look at each and individual course offered at all programs. JHU is quant heavy and in DC, Princeton seems to send most of its grads into the federal sector, American does have an MPP program and Tufts has both MIB and MALD which do look interesting. It sucks not to know exactly what you want to do, but I know that I would like a quant heavy program.
  4. The programs I highlighted in yellow are quant-heavy and send a high percentage of grads to the private sector.
  5. The ones in yellow are my top picks.
  6. Yes, applying next fall. Getting things done early.
  7. I hadn't, looks like there's a breadth of information. Thanks.
  8. After a bit of research, I have finally narrowed down my list to these schools: SCHOOLS: 1. Harvard (HKS) 2. Columbia (SIPA) 3. Johns Hopkins (SAIS) 4. Duke (Sanford) 5. University of Michigan (Ford) 6. Princeton (Wilson) 7. Tufts (Fletcher) 8. George Washington University (Trachtenberg) 9. American University (SIS) 10. University of Chicago (Harris) 11. Carnegie Mellon (Heinz) 12. Georgetown (McCourt) (MSFS) I want to get rid of 2-3 schools from the blue-highlighted list, but I'm having trouble deciding which ones. I'm thinking about omitting University of Michigan, Princeton and American. I'm looking for a more quant-heavy program as I would preferably like to enter the private/multilateral sector. Am I on the right track? PS: I have a mediocre profile, time on my hands and application fee waiver for most of these schools.
  9. Did anyone apply to both MALD AND MIB? Which one is more competitive?
  10. I wouldn't mind getting targeted experience, but it would be hard for me to get a position with a biology degree and some development experience. But I'll continue researching. Thank you.
  11. Thank you. I feel my profile is not strong enough for me to apply to only 4-5 schools.
  12. All of these universities require a proctored exam. Does this mean I have no options?
  13. Applying to: Goldman, HKS, SIPA, SAIS, Sanford, Ford, Harris and Mccourt Concerns: low GRE, low GPA, lack of microeconomics (which I plan to take) Plans: economic development sector of consulting, foreign service Should I have safeties?
  14. For credit to use on my transcript?
  15. I'm trying to find online economics classes: micro/macro that I can take outside the US. I'm currently in Peace Corps living in a developing country.
  16. I just looked at UTs and Berkeleys extension programs and they require a proctored exam. Are there any other options for me? I live in a developing country with limited access to Internet.
  17. But which course should I take? I'm also looking into UT extension since that's my alma matter.
  18. Plan is to work for consulting firms working that have a department that works for the public sector (economic development). I'm going to apply to joint degree programs at Duke (Sanford and Fuqua), Michigan (Ford and Ross) and Georgetown (McCourt and McDonough). I will apply to other MPP schools, but I am not sure how strong my chances are for MBA programs. Profile University: Large Public University in the South Major: Biology GPA: 3.0-ish GRE: 154 V / 161 Q / 4.0 AW Work Experience: Undergraduate Research Assistant and 2 years Peace Corps (Economic Development) Do I have a chance at the aforementioned programs?
  19. Quantitative background: Calculus I (B), Statistics (B) I did not take any economics classes during undergrad. I want to enroll in an online economics course. Should I take macroeconomics or microeconomics or both (would be expensive)?
  20. Can anyone speak of strong MPP programs that focus on economic development consulting? By economic development consulting, I mean helping governments and public-sector organizations design and implement strategies that promote economic development. Especially, developing economies.
  21. bump I would like some more information on this topic. Looking to join consulting firms that work for or have a department that works for the public sector.
  22. Thanks for the reply.
  23. I couldn't find any information pertaining to my particular case. My freshman year, I attended a satellite school of a large state school. I received a 3.53 at the end of the year. The following year, I transferred to the main campus. After 2 years at the main campus I graduated with a 3.0. My question: will my GPA be considered as a 3.0 since my official transcript does not take into account my first year at the satellite school? Or do I ask each individual college I apply to? I graduated in 3 years, and I would think it's unfair if they don't take into account my freshman GPA.
  24. Undergraduate institution: Large Public School Undergraduate GPA: Low. I need help with this section. My first year was at a satellite school where I received a 3.5. I then transferred and received a 3.0 in the end. Will my cumulative GPA be a 3.0 or can I include the first year GPA? On my official transcript, I don't think it will show my first year GPA included in the cumulative GPA. Undergraduate Major: BA, Biology Study Abroad: - GRE Quantitative Score: 161 GRE Verbal Score: 154 GRE AW Score: 4.0 Age: 23, will be 24 when I enter. Years Out of Undergrad (if applicable): 2 Years of Work Experience: 2 years Peace Corps, 1 year Undergraduate Research Assistant (does this count?) Languages: French and Hindi Quant: I took Calculus I and Statistics but did not take Macro/Micro. I have lived in seven different countries throughout my life. I want to enter management consulting for the public sector or become a Foreign Service Officer. What MPP schools should I apply to?
