  1. CMU policy is pretty strong, if you're serious about research, don't pass up the PhD for a cash cow master's program
  2. I think that your admissions letter is an implied contract if they state that you have until 4/15 (has nothing to do with grad council agreement yada yada)
  3. Seriously, what's with the backlash? I think business schools tend to have higher stipends for PhD students since the opportunity costs are relatively high for us. Many have MBA's or advanced degrees in marketable fields, not to mention several years of work experience. That said, 35k is definitely still in the higher stipend range. Rice has a new PhD program, so the stipend is part of their method of attracting good students to join. The only other program that I've heard of offering 35k is HBS, and that's in a much more expensive city. I believe Chicago's Booth GSB pays 30-32k, and I received a 28k offer from Rochester.
  4. Those are some pretty elite programs. Even for the best qualified candidates, it can be a crapshoot. Stats alone won't get you in, have to have stellar recs and stellar sop
  5. Here's my male perspective. I would personally resent being with a spouse who thinks I am a failure.
  6. So glad my GA is going to be as high as it is, 35k =)

Home Park is the best of all of that. There are GT shuttles that stop there, then from campus you can take the MARTA to most major destinations. Home Park is close to Atlantic Station where you can go shopping/dining. Home Park will be your cheapest bet. Peachtree st. has less students, but a lot more stuff to do.
  8. I think I will be in the minority as a "liberal" academic in business.
  9. I also have a livescribe pen, or did until it got washed with my laundry. If I could just remember to take it out of my pocket, it would be the single greatest tool I own in my academic endeavors.
  10. Will be attending Rice in the fall for PhD in marketing. Anyone else going to Rice?
  11. 12k is not enough to live in Las Vegas. Typical 1 bdrm apartment runs between 700-800/ mth. If you're here for 12 mths, that's most of your stipend after tax. Of course you could get roommates, but be prepared to live close to campus (not the most desirable location) because you won't be able to afford insurance on a car. Most of my classmates who are GA's have some kind of student loans to help with the COL. Unless, of course, you're a poker player and like to hustle tourists on the weekends...
