  1. So when a PhD program has a minimum undergraduate GPA for admission, would a graduate GPA from a MS override that?

Depends. Sometimes they'd calculate a cumulative GPA of your undergrad and MS, and sometimes it overrides your previous GPA. Best ask the admissions and/or department.

Ask admissions/department/etc. It will vary from program to program.

  2. Just realized if I want to apply to PhD schools, I have to apply next fall... I just got into gradschool and I already have to start the process again soon? :-(. Also for people who did their MS and then PhD, is it awkward/disrespectful to ask your professors for letters for the school you are at AND other schools? I feel like if I end up staying where I will get my MS that there might be some awkwardness.

Not awkward at all. Nobody expects people not to apply to other programs.

Does your adviser not feel like "oh if you are still here that means you didn't get into MIT (for example)?

All professors understand what the process is like. You should be fine. My MA profs were happy to provide me with letters for PhD programs.

  3. Well, going to NCSU. The stress will never end will it?

  4. One decision left now (which they said will come in "Around April 15th". I guess I will decline admissions to all my admits but one and hope that the last one comes in before the deadline. Kind of scary that decision time is only a few days away.

You could also consider asking for an extension from the one you aren't declining. I hope you hear soon... pretty lame to drag it out to the last minute like that.

Accept one offer, and ask for a written release if that decision left to hear from comes after April 15...

  5. UMN autoreplied to my email asking if I could get a decision before my acceptance deadlines on April 15th with "We will begin to review MS applications in March with decision notifications beginning around April 15". Well I guess the day of April 15th will be chaos.

Wow, that's pretty bad. I don't know how they can expect to be competitive with other places with that timeline! (Perhaps they don't?)

  6. Wish the remaining 3 would give me my results so I can pick a school already...

  7. 3/3 now. Still no word from the two top (I guess I have a 1a and 1b school and then the rest are 2a-f depending on potential funding/continuing on to phd process). Still this has been a pretty good start to the weekend.

You're on a roll! I'm sure their answers will come in soon.

Heck yes! You said it, friend. This is a blessing!

  8. 2/2 so far :-). Fighting the urge to email the others asking for a timeline so I can make a decision asap :-(.

Do it. Some schools encourage it. They know they'd appreciate prompt responses, so many are willing to give that helpful info.

  9. First result is an acceptance! Feels good to finally be able to add a result to the results page

      Congratulations!

  10. Great Utah sent an email saying decisions would be emailed "Any moment now...". Now I'm stuck refreshing my Google Inbox

  11. I hope the email asking me to change my MS application to MS/PhD is a good sign...

Yes how would that not be? They want you to do more (and probably have a chance at funding)!
