  1. Received rejection from F1 this morning Good luck everyone who is still waiting.
  2. I am also F1 and haven't heard anything =/ Getting anxious!
  3. Thanks for letting us know, aconv13. Better luck next time, but cheers for the high rating on the peer review nonetheless. I hope that they let everyone know soon, this wait is brutal.
  4. Thanks for the update
  5. At first I thought they meant 6 months from the deadline, but that still doesn't quite add up. Maybe it was a remnant leftover from a modified copy/paste form response they send out to all grant submissions and not just the STAR fellowship?
  6. I got the same e-mail. Frustrating
  7. In reference to your first question, I would advise you to check into specific programs to determine whether they offer "rolling admissions". If so, then you must get your application in as soon as possible in order to qualify for the first round of interviews and maximize your chance of admission. I am not familiar with psychology specifically, so rolling admissions may not apply to your field.
  8. Thanks for the update.
  9. I read this on the fellowship page: "Due to the volume of applications received, the emailed acknowledgement from receipt.application@epa.gov may take several weeks. Thus, our staff will not respond to queries regarding applications received before June 25, 2015. Please make a notation on your calendar to contact the program at 2015FellowshipsRFA@epa.gov from June 25, 2015, to no later than 5:00 PM ET July 9, 2015, for information if you have not received the notification from receipt.application@epa.gov by that time. Failure to follow these instructions may result in your application not being accepted for review. See "Submission Instructions and Other Submission Requirements" for additional information regarding acknowledgment of receipt of submitted applications. Be sure to check your email spam folder and/or check your spam filter settings to ensure emails from EPA are delivered to your email inbox."
  10. I believe that the application stated we should know for certain by August 1st, but I think that finalists may be contacted sooner in order to submit official transcripts and to complete other documentation. I am also an applicant under the F1 category, and super anxious to hear back already!
  11. I think this is highly variable from one research team to the next. Even within my department, I have worked on several different research teams resulting in very different experiences. I am currently in a social sciences field (if that helps as a frame of reference). Through working for some faculty members, I have been expected to conduct all work on campus or at research sites. This involved a lot of on-campus time face-to-face. With another professor, the research was not as classified, and I am able to work at home via the school's VPN. Also for this assistantship, I am a more "senior" student now, and am able and trusted to work independently. For some professors, I have worked on the honor system to keep up with my hours, and with others I have had to submit a detailed weekly time sheet signed by the professor themselves. Even working at home, I still have had to put in all of the hours I am paid to work. The nature of the work can also vary greatly. In my current position as a GRA, I have had a huge range of duties-- sometimes being directly involved with research projects (primary data collection), other times with handling and processing the data (survey building, statistical analysis), and other times I take on tasks that frees up my professor for research (attending meetings/webinars on her behalf and taking notes, copy editing, etc.). Definitely not a stupid question, but a difficult one for anyone other than members of the research team you'll be working with to answer. The only way to know for sure is to experience it Good luck!
  12. Is it possible that you had an advisor that you had more contact with than a professor? If so, this person might be able to provide an academic letter of recommendation on your behalf. Were you involved in any academic organizations? A faculty member affiliated with a club or group that you were involved in as part of your major could also be a great resource as a reference. You mentioned that you are working full time. Is this in a field that is related to your career? With some guidance, a supervisor may be able to provide a suitable letter of recommendation based on your applied skills. As a last resort, you might be able to volunteer as a research assistant for one of your former professors. It is important to ask whether the recommendation provider can write you a strong letter rather than simply writing you a letter, so it might be worth your time to volunteer and let them get to know your capacity for research outside of the classroom. I hope these ideas help Good luck.
  13. Thanks for posting this! I will definitely be following the page for updates.
  14. I applied for F1 too (Urban Planning field). Good luck everyone!
  15. Hi HNV721, I'm moving to Tallahassee from Atlanta with my husband in the Fall as well. We are looking at apartments that are a little more pricey (~$900 a month) range and are really pleased with Alexan Southwood and Verandas at Southwood on a first impression. I'm also searching craigslist for a rental house, as I'd prefer more space than an apartment, but it seems that even the older rental homes are pretty pricey. Let me know if you've heard of anywhere else I should check out! Thanks!
  16. Don't feel bad! I think you may have really dodged a bullet. I definitely would not feel supported with a passive aggressive advisor. It is your future and you have to do what is best for you. It sounds like you remained professional in the situation and that is all they can expect of you. Try not to let his negative attitude get to you!
  17. Thanks for the perspective fuzzylogician! I would feel better if the reason that I wasn't nominated was because they had nominated a more qualified candidate. However, from word of mouth, it seems the department just didn't nominate anyone for the university-wide fellowships this cycle. This strikes me as odd.
  18. First, I just want to say I feel incredibly fortunate to have been accepted to several Ph.D. programs that are a good fit for my research interests. Let's call them A, B, and C. Program A nominated me for a sizable fellowship ($30,000/yr), which I was ultimately awarded. This offer is guaranteed for my duration in the program and includes health insurance and tuition remission. However, for a number of reasons, this program is not the most desirable for me to attend. Namely, fewer faculty interested in my area of research (but on the flip side, the program and my advisors at this school would be completely supportive of me independently pursuing my area of interest), along with a cross-country move. The university for program B has several sizable university-wide fellowships available. I applied early and indicated my interest in these fellowships. I was not nominated by my department, but was instead awarded an $18,000/yr assistantship guaranteed for my duration in the program. Tuition remission is available for a limited number of credit hours and health insurance is not included. This program is very desirable to me in terms of research fit, but it would be a struggle to live off of this stipend in this area. I would be coming into the program with an MA and a set of research skills and experience. Meanwhile, (per GradCafe) there have been incoming undergrads to this same program's Master's degree track awarded a $16,000/yr assistantship. Additionally, I am somewhat offended with Program B for the lack of a fellowship nomination. The fellowships are only available to incoming doctoral students, and the department is only pursuing myself and one other applicant for admission to the doctoral program. I have a feeling that the lack of nomination is not personal, and rather that the department did not meet the university's nomination deadline (although I was formally offered admission prior to the nomination deadline). I have been open with program B about my funded offer to program A. With ~$3,000 more guaranteed per year, I feel that I could attend this program without taking out loans and it would certainly make me feel more comfortable accepting the offer. Program C is a great research fit (probably the best), but although funding has not been explicitly decided, I am expecting an offer of less than $10,000/yr based on historical offers and conversations with current grad students. I feel like I'm in a tug of war from A and B. Program C is probably out, simply because I am not interested in using loans as my primary source for funding my doctoral degree. If the offers were closer in funding, it would be an easy choice. But, such is life. Any advice?
  19. I'm from Georgia and currently attend the gerontology program at Georgia State if you have any specific questions that pertain more to the area than the program.
  20. I made a table of pros and cons of the programs where I was accepted. The column headers were each program. The first row after the headings included the basic info: how much funding I was guaranteed, for what length of time my funding was guaranteed, and whether my appointment was 9 or 12 months. The next row included pros. The final row included cons. Campus visits were especially helpful in determining the nitty gritty pros and cons. I think that when you're making the list, you will find yourself making a lot more "cons" for the programs where you have that gut feeling that you won't fit in well. It might at least help you establish which way you are leaning.
  21. Option A sounds great to me-- better fit for your career aspirations (it seems like based on your description that you may be more interested in applied research than theoretical), lower tuition cost to offset the higher cost of living, and a better location. All of those things could result in a much higher quality of life for you, which to me, is more important than the school's ranking. Update us and let us know what you decide!
  22. I think that you should think seriously about your long term career goals. If a Ph.D. is what you need to attain those goals, then it is worth noting that this may be your only offer. I don't mean to appear negative or pessimistic about your prospects, but it is possible that even in reapplying, you may not have any offers at all in the next cycle. Considering the uncertainty, I would accept the offer that you do already have in hand if your future career goals involve having a Ph.D.
  23. I would say go for the funded offer, but that is just my personal opinion. I have had a really difficult time dealing with the challenges of the application cycle. I am a planner, so having things uncertain and playing the waiting game would just be too tough for me to go through all over again. No way I would put myself through that again if I already had an offer at a school that I liked enough to apply to in the first place. My thought is that if you did hate the program, you could repeat the application process and transfer. I understand that would be time consuming to reapply in the midst of your first year in a program, but who knows? You may find yourself liking the program much more than you thought. Have you visited the program? If you could give us some insight as to why (other than ranking) this program was your last choice, we may be able to help more.
  24. Thanks for letting us know what you decided. Best of luck!!!
  25. I plan on making a large move with all my furniture. I'm hoping to take out a small personal loan to cover some of these expenses. I also plan on raising some money through a garage sale from items that I can leave behind or that I plan to repurchase after the move. I am going to rent a larger moving truck and do the loading/unloading myself (with husband, friends, family, anyone from the new program I'll be attending, etc). Since there's furniture involved, it isn't economical for the pods/containers services that move your items in a crate. I plan on selling my old vehicle and leaving it behind. I am also curious what others are doing. I envy those on the results whose programs are providing an amount for moving expenses!
