  1. Just saw the third Hobbit movie. It was meh. Waiting for Orphan Black to return!
  2. Eek! Sounds like a complicated situation. Each option has its challenges. From my perspective, I would go with my heart and choose the first school, since that sounds like your best fit. Have you asked or thought about delaying your admission by a year until the custody situation is resolved (or reapplying altogether)? Just a question, as I realize how intense the application process was and how eager you are to start on your grad work (I also applied to programs this cycle and I wouldn't wish repeating that on anyone!). Keep us updated with what you choose. Best of luck!
  3. Sorry, I'm not familiar with full versus half courses. I hope that you find an answer. If not on here, perhaps through contacting someone in charge of admissions. Good luck!
  4. Could you tell us a little more about the context? If the program requires a B average in your last two years of study, it typically means that you have a 3.0 GPA in your courses above the 3000 level.
  5. I am anxious to hear back, as this is one of my top choice Ph.D. programs. The historical posts on the results search shows inconsistent notification times from previous years, with some as late as early April. The deadline was Dec. 1 and the e-mail notifying me that my file was complete stated that they hoped to have results by mid-February to early March. I was just wondering if anyone else has heard back from the program this cycle? Thanks!
  6. I hate the "What would you do if you won the lottery?" question. I have had that in both professional and academic interviews and yet for some reason it always hits me out of left field. I'm clearly invested in my research and would maintain my job because of a genuine passion, but they have always prompted me specifically about how I would spend the money after giving that answer, and I'm never sure how to respond.
  7. I applied to the joint program in Social Work and Sociology. Anxiously awaiting the results I am interested in geriatric social work and community partnerships that help older adults remain independent and enjoy a high QOL while aging in their current home/community. I noticed a couple of results for Michigan State's Ph.D. in Social Work on the results search, but I must have missed the interview for University of Michigan. Did you find this on the results search? If so, what was the date out of curiosity? Thanks!
  8. Thanks GeoDude! I was able to find an applicable statement in the CGS document. "In those instances in which a student accepts an offer before April 15, and subsequently desires to withdraw that acceptance, the student may submit in writing a resignation of the appointment at any time through April 15." That statement makes it seem like it is possible to rescind your commitment prior to April 15th, but I am definitely hoping I don't have to find out. http://www.cgsnet.org/ckfinder/userfiles/files/CGSResolution_Rev2015.pdf
  9. I received an acceptance today from my safety Ph.D. Program (which I would still be thrilled to attend!). I did not apply for an early decision deadline. The acceptance letter stipulated that I must accept or decline enrollment by February 15th. I was also notified that funding decisions will not be made until late Feb/early March. So they are requiring a decision from me without any idea on how the funding situation will turn out. I have an interview a higher ranked program after this deadline will have passed. I plan to ask for an extension, but if I'm not granted one, I think I will need to turn the program down based on the uncertainty of funding. Is this fairly common? If it helps, this IS a program on the list for the Council of Graduate Schools. I'm assuming they are able to bypass the April 15th deadline because they are requiring an admission commitment without yet extending a financial aid offer. If I did accept the offer, is this in any way binding? Thanks in advance!
  10. Which program? I also applied for an HDFS program (at Oregon State) and thought I'd make an introduction in case we're applicants to the same school
  11. Hi darwingirl, when did you receive an admission decision from UMichigan EEB? This is my husband's top choice program and we are super anxious waiting to hear back.
  12. I have very similar stats for my GRE (high 90th percentile verbal, 40th percentile quant, 4.0 writing), a 3.31 in Biology & Chemistry for my undergrad, an Associate's awarded through joint enrollment, and a 4.15 GPA on my MA in Gerontology. Also have 2 years undergrad natural science research, 2 years graduate social science research, and strong letters of recommendation. I have applied to social sciences and public health programs with an aging focus in the current application cycle. In describing my research experience, I emphasized that I have obtained strong quantitative skills through my research, which were not measured on a general GRE exam. I am also hoping that the weak quantitative section won't hold me back. I will update with my admissions decisions as soon as they come in, and considering that our profiles are very similar, hopefully that helps. Which application cycle will you be applying for?
  13. I am applying to doctoral programs that offer a specialization or focus on aging services and programs. As a result, the programs themselves vary quite a bit-- University of Michigan SW and Sociology,UMBC Gerontology, UC-Berkeley Public Health, Portland State U Community Health, and Oregon State U Human Development and Family Studies. I haven't heard back from any yet, so I am a bit nervous. Please update as soon as you hear back from the University of Michigan if you don't mind
  14. I am also waiting to hear back from the joint Ph.D. program in Social Work and Sociology at the University of Michigan! Are you applying to the joint program as well? I just assumed an interview would be required, but now I'm curious. I'm interested in following this thread to see the responses. Thanks for posting.
