Booking.com hotel reservation
virtua replied to virtua's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
I got a bit confused on your posts, guys. Can I rely on Booking.com`s reservation? Or should I have reserved the room throught the hotel`s website? But I reserved on non-refundable rate, so it is late anyway. Note that it is 5-star hotel, I hope they are advanced enough to work well with Booking.com, I hope there won`t be any problem -
Dear forum, what do I have to do after arriving to the US? I mean things related with immigration, I remember in some countries regardless of your purpose of entry after arriving you go to immigration service or something like this for doing some kind of paperwork

First of all, I`m really sorry for posting so much on hotel/flights topic, I just need to know the experience. So I have booked a hotel on booking.com, but it hasn`t charged me at all, can anyone explain me why? It is the first time I book on booking.com

Traveling to the US first time; Connection flights
virtua replied to virtua's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
Thank you, guys, for your replies! I called the airlines company-they confirmed that it will be transferred, but I asked here because I just wanted to know how I would observe it in the airport -

But how do you know that in the airport? I mean is it something related with tag or what? -

Guys, how to know if your luggage will be transferred? I will be flying this way A(US city)-Chicago-Istanbul-B(Asian city). Now, A-Chicago flight is provided by United, other flights-by Turkish Airlines, but I made only 1 reservation on Turkish Airlines website, I mean I didn`t buy separate tickets, so it`s connection flight, the flight from A to Chicago is codeshare flight (or whatever it is called, I don`t know) so I assume my luggage won`t be transferred from Chicago to Istanbul, so I have to do it myself, am I right? But it will be transferred from IST to B, right? -
Ok, I purchased ticket from JetBlue (it`s not a part of connection flight), what would you guys recommend me to print? I have email from them saying "Your itinerary for your upcoming trip". I also requested receipt and now have it in my email. So which one would you recommend me to print?
-
Guys, the question occured to me: how can I make sure that I really reserved/purchased a ticket? because, you know, most of airlines let you enter your information, go through the all steps and get confirmation/itinerary-so it looks like you have bought a ticket, while in reality they haven`t charged you yet, so in fact, as far as I understand, you haven`t purchased the ticket yet in that case. Although, I guess, you get the ticket number only in case you actually purchsed it, I can`t remember.

1. Guys, I bought a ticket to JFK, what would you recommend me in order to get well-prepared for the immigration things? I mean, is it easy to know which route I should go in the airport or it would be better to study the map of JFK to be well-oriented? 2. Any review on JetBlue? -
How to stay safe in a college town?
virtua replied to virtua's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads

My question is adressed as to international students as to domestic students. I have been researching safety records of the university I`m going to attend and have got concerned about the overall situation in the US. For example, I know that in the US gun laws are soft, so people can easily carry guns-this is absolutely different in my home country, I mean I could barely imagine someone walking in the street and carrying a gun, unless he is criminal or a policeman. So I will have to get used to it. So, I would like to know the way an international student should live and behave in a small college town (my university is located in such one) in order to stay safe. Which places should I avoid? What kind of people should I avoid? What to do if I get in a trouble? Any tips and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. P.S. I would want to mention the name of the city I`m going, but I`m not sure if that is okay. I mean, if I don`t breach any forum rule or any other rule by doing this, I`m ready to mention it, as long as it is helpful for forum members to help me.

Guys, I have bought tickets online myself for the first time. There are several things that concern me a bit. Particularly, how am I going to obtain an actual ticket itself? I hope for people who did it many times it will be easy to answer. I have flied 2 times before and I remember giving the printout of an electronic receipt in the airport and taking an actual ticket. So now I have bought tickets from 2 different airlines and have received confirmation codes and emails from both of them, but one airline sent me pdf (e-receipt), the other one (jetBlue) didn`t, although in the email they have code and ticket number provided. So will I get an actual ticket just by showing the passport or just by telling confirmation code? Or should I print pdf from one and the email itself (from the 2nd one) and show these printouts during registration?

Applying for Green Card during PhD
virtua replied to virtua's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
No problem, it is okay, Yes, I google every question before I post it here, but that doesn`t mean that I find an answer on Google specifically to my question, the thing is I usually find a lot of results that do not fit my case or there are some other problems with them. -
Can I apply for Green Card during my PhD? Who has exeperince with that? How does the overall process look like?

Is it possible for international student (who even doesn`t have licence in his home country) to get driver`s licence in the US? I mean, I can`t drive, I know about half of rules, but I never drove, so how do you think guys would that be possible for me to learn how to drive and to get driver`s licence, let`s say, in 2-3 months, I mean is it doable to allocate enough time for preparation to driving exam during grad education? Also, guys I would be really thankful to you if you could share any link that might be helpful in preparation and overall might make familiar with the whole process of obtaining driver`s licence.

My question is adressed to those who fly from countries located very far from the US, so there is no direct flight. How do you guys buy tickets, so that you are sure that you choose the right option in terms of price, layover and etc? I know there are search engines like skyscanner, but still it is difficult for me to choose the cheapest and the most comfortable option.

Leaving PhD (with assistantship) going to MSc
virtua replied to virtua's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Ok, but you are talking about scholarship, I assume the things are different with assistantship, since in that case you get funding in form of salary for your job, correct me if I`m wrong. I think it should have been mentioned in my offer if that was the case, right? I didn`t see anything like that in my offer. -

virtua replied to virtua's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I didn`t quite get you, so do you mean that if I leave PhD and even if I`m not going to switch to MSc at the same uni I might be required to repay them all the funding that I had been payed?? -
Leaving PhD (with assistantship) going to MSc
virtua replied to virtua's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Guys, I have just thought, what if I change my program from PhD to MSc within the same department? Would I have to start over with courses or I could just continue with the courses I already took? Would I have to pay for the courses that I took (when I was on assistantship) ? -
Entering the US at different city
virtua replied to virtua's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
Ah, ok. This is actually why I created this topic. http://www.immihelp.com/forum/showthread.php/186436-B1-B2-visa-cancelled-under-section-212-(a)-(7)-(A)-(i)-(I)-at-the-port To be frank I haven`t read it till the end and thoroughly. But when I read the beginning I was concerned about my case. Thank you, guys, a lot for your replies! -
