  2. Dear forum, as you know students are not allowed to work off-campus with F-1 visa, 1. Is it possible to get another type visa which would allow to work off-campus? 2. Has anyone worked off-campus during his/her education in the US?
  3. Guys, please share the real facts/experience. International students, how do you think what are advantages/disadvantages of PhD specifically in the USA (especially, in engineering)? And what about ad/disad of PhD, in general? Is it difficult for people with PhD to find a job in industry?
  4. Thank you very much, guys, for your replies! You know, I`m an international student and I have never lived in the USA, I have never been to the USA, so I have many concerns regarding living costs, I do not know what I will have to pay for, how much I will have to pay; but I hope I will be able to contact with current students and to know their experience. The thing is I do not want my family to pay for anything, and if my Phd education at the university 1 will make me to spend more than I will earn, then I will definitely leave that. I do not want to have nothing saved up after 4-5 years, that thought makes me very timid in my choice
  5. What else? Please, guys, I need some information
  6. So, what you wrote doesnt apply to assistantship, right?
  7. Thank you so much, guys! I really appreciate your replies! In this story the main question for me is money, I`m not sure if the salary they will pay me will be sufficient for me to live in the city where university is located. So I`m thinking about risks "What if...". 1. How do you think, guys, would that be rude or impolite to ask my university regarding consequences of leaving, particularly about whether I have to pay them or not if I leave? 2. And how do you think, guys, could I continue my education in the USA, being enrolled into MSc at the 2nd university, right after leaving PhD at the 1st one?
  8. I have recently read the article speaking about uselessness of PhD, and it was written that some people that were doing Phd were so exhausted that they tried to leave the program. Let's say, I accept an offer and work as a Research Assistant doing my Phd, what if I do not like the program at the 1st year of my education and want to leave everything and go back to my country? Would that be problem for me? What are the consequences?
  9. Last friday, but I have applied for MSc, I do not know why they put me in MEng, probably my application was not strong enough

Guys, I have applied for MSc to the USC on Dec 13, but they still haven`t released my application to the department for review (due to unknown reasons), I hope they will release it in 2-3 days, do I have chances to be considered for Dean`s Master scholarship? The thing is deadline for scholarship was Dec 15, but it is unclear if it is for submission or for release to department
  11. I`m an international male student (non-US citizen), who have been accepted to PhD at the university, which is in ranking not top, but not at the bottom either. I have been offered Research Assistantship. I don`t think that salary is high, but I hope it is enough to live in the city where the university is located, but I don`t think that I will be able to save up some money with that salary. And I have to answer to this offer till some approaching deadline, but I still haven`t received answers from the other universities to which I applied for MSc (well, actually, I have received answers from 2 of them: I have been accepted, but they dont offer me any assistantship). There are many questions in my head, but in summary, I would like to ask for advice, what do you think, guys, is it worth to spend 4-5 years doing PhD in an average university (but with very good lab)? Is there anything that I will gain after it? I would like you, guys, to share your experience; has anyone who did PhD felt that it made a difference in his/her life? Thanks in advance.
  12. Guys, I have been accepted to MEng (master of engineering) in the University of Tulsa, but I haven`t received any assistantship offer yet, do they offer assistantship for MEng or it is only for MSc?
  13. Guys, has anyone heard anything back from Colorado School of Mines?
  14. Guys, I have been offered Research Assistantship. And there are some problems which make very doubtful on deciding whether to accept the offer or not. Let`s say I accept it, and I do all the necessary procedures (sign the letter, get I-20 and etc.) and later because of some problems I reject it. What would happen? p.s. I`m international student
  15. Thank you very much, guys! You can`t imagine, how much your posts are valuable source of information for me Because I do not have anyone to ask about it, because I`m international student. Yes, I have been accepted, but I still wait for responses from other schools. I do not care so much about ranking, but I do care about oil companies` attitude toward this university. I mean whether they do recognize this university as, let`s say, 'competent' or not.
  16. What else do you know about it? I was quite disappointed by rankings, I made little research and almost found nothing good about it, although I must say I found nothing about it at all.
  17. Guys, please, I need advice, what do you think of the University of Wyoming? Is it a good place to study Petroleum Engineering? I looked at ranking: it is closer to the bottom, rather to the top

  19. What are Skype interviews (for MSc and PhD) usually about? What do professors usually ask? How long do they last? How should I prepare for an interview? How to succeed on such interview?
  20. I have received an email about Skype interview invitation from one of the uiniversities I applied for, I`m a bit worried. guys, what is usually asked on an interview? How long does it usually last? Does the interview invitation mean something about chances to be admitted or to get scholarship or it is just interview and that`s all?
  21. Guys, do you email to advisors asking about the status of your application? Isn`t it impolite? I haven`t mailed my official credentials yet, how do you think, guys, can this have a bad impact on funding considerations? I mean, can they not fund (not offer TA/RA/GA) my education because of that?
  22. And what about Louisiana State University? Is Petroleum Eng good there?
  23. Guys, has anyone received anything from u of Wyoming/Tulsa/Southern California or Colorado S of M? Guys, I would like to know, if assistantships are usually sufficient to pay for all expenses? And when do universities grant students with assistanships? What do you think of University of Calgary? Is it a good idea to study Petroleum Engineering there?
  24. Can such thing happen? I mean, can a university admit you to Phd while you applied for MSc? To be honest, I would be happy if this occcur to me.
  25. Guys, I have been admitted to the University of Kansas! But I do not know if I get assistantship or not. When do they usually decide on it?
