If you are too good for Stanford what are you supposed to do? I guess you would have to start your own university at that point.

I think people take rejections way too personally (though I guess they are judging your personal accomplishments and future goals so it is personal). Sometimes a school just doesn't have room for you for whatever reason. Being sassy about it isn't going to change things.

Be a little gentle. While I do find it a little perplexing, and I do enjoy a good joke, this person I could honestly see being a foreigner. I used to work overseas, and a lot of the "kids" I worked with would use google translate to help them convey ideas. Not totally here, but it ALMOST sounds like what's going on here. Just a little devil's advocate.~

Iowa rejection = badge of honor. Proud token on my female hero's journey. Also, shocked no one has tried to use this thread as a dating forum...there is a lot of ambition/loneliness here

    This whole thing confuses me....

So for all of you that have had your campus visits how did they go and were they what you expected? Also did they impact or solidify your decisions?

I did my undergrad at USC. It is a really fun school. Dr. Gwara was one of my professors. He had at least one grad student under him when I had his class, so I'm sure you have a chance! PM me if you have any questions about the school!
Also, I will be attending UNC-Wilmington for my MA.

I did my undergrad there. Holly Crocker is super nice. She was actually in one of my French classes. I don't know Dr. Gwara.

angel_kaye13 reacted to rising_star in How much does your cohort matter?
I don't know that it matters. I loved my master's cohort, but I hadn't met any of them before I began, and we were a mixed cohort of incoming MA and PhD students. I actually got along better with the PhD students, some of whom I still talk to. The year I started my PhD, I was in a cohort of 16. I became friends with... 4 of those people, and then made friends from a few other cohorts. I actively disliked being around about half of my cohort, even when we were all in the coursework phase. We just did not get along inside or outside the classroom but that doesn't mean they're terrible people. At the PhD level, I tended to stick with friends who did research in similar areas and/or were on my approximate timeline (seriously, all my PhD friends and I graduated within the same 9 month period, though we began at different times).

All that said, I don't know how much value I'd put in to getting along with the potential cohort. It is definitely less important than the advisor, funding, available committee members, opportunities to publish, etc.

You need to find an Asian market and try out the different brands of curry paste they sell there. For generic mild curry sauce, I tend to just buy the bottled stuff at Trader Joe's but that definitely has no kick to it at all.

Urgh. The UCI rejection/wait list notices are right around the corner, if history is any indication (though I've heard elsewise from folks who have already been accepted--it's more of a rolling wait list?). Either way, it's my last notification before I close the books on Fall 2015 app season. COME ON ALREADY.... starting to lose it....

Add me to the Harvard denial list! Now if UPenn would just hurry up and reject me I can officially say I made it through an application season alive

Has anyone else found themselves alternating between thoughts of how perfect any of their programs would be and wishing they applied more/elsewhere? I know that I did my due diligence when selecting schools to apply to, but the waiting puts everything into question.

Did I pick this school only because of the name? Would X be more appropriate than Y for my interests? Should I have applied to Z despite a slightly weaker research fit?

I'm sure all of this is a coping mechanism to avoid attachment to any one possibility, but it has become difficult to focus on much else in life with so much uncertainty.

I will be 28, when I start my Masters! 6 years after finishing my undergrad...I don't regret the work and experiences thus far, I do think it helped bolster my application...But I still can't believe it's been this long.

It's absolutely ok to bring it up at the first meeting.  Make sure you tell her/him a little about your research interests, and draw some connections between your work and theirs.  That will help her/him see why you'd be a good fit as an advisee.  Most advisors will tell you straight out whether they have space for another advisee.  Good luck!

Not at all.  You're accepted for a reason- there's a fit with one (or MORE) of the faculty members.  Keep an open mind- personalities matter too.  Take some time to take classes with other professors before settling on a thesis adviser.

So BU rejected me by email about a week ago. Today I got ANOTHER email with a letter attached saying I was rejected, and the email stated that an actual letter would be sent by snail mail. What the fuck. I get it.

angel_kaye13 reacted to HistoryGypsy in What were you doing when you got accepted?
I had just had a lovely dinner with my friend/coworker and her husband, who are the parents of a lovely college freshie whom I taught late year as a high-schooler (one of my favorite students, if I allowed myself to have favorites).  This girl is currently at Penn State, so her parents and I were talking at dinner about how great it would be if I got in there, since I could keep an eye on her and offer a little extra emotional support where needed (they/we live in China, so it's pretty unnerving having their daughter all alone in the USA).  I got home and decided to check the website, just on a whim, before I went to bed.  Being a Sunday, I really didn't expect to see any changes.  Then I saw the message about being accepted . . . and I was so caught off guard that I actually screamed!  Which, in turn, startled my roommate and caused her to scream (she had been almost asleep)!  And then I told her, and we screamed again together!  What a night.

Thank you Angela_Kaye13! I realize I am fortunate to get the opportunities I have had so far and by no means am I wallowing in despair about any of the offers. But thanks for the encouragement and kind words.
