  1. Ambularr, I am in a similar boat as you! My overall GPA thus far is a 3.2 (hopefully I can get it up a bit before application season begins) and my CMD major GPA is a 3.4 (potentially can be a 3.5 after next semester before application season!). My last 60 should (hopefully) be decently high before I begin applying. I haven't taken the GRE yet but hopefully I do well on it to help balance out my low GPA. But one thing I am doing to help my application stand out a little is shadowing/volunteering for an SLP in a hospital this summer! I also plan on going back next winter break, as well. Doing a lot of shadowing and/or volunteering in the field looks really great on an application, you should definitely look into it! I'm planning on applying to less competitive programs, such as schools in the south or midwest (I'm willing to relocate anywhere to pursue this career!). I use ASHA's edfind to research programs that would possibly be willing to take a chance on me. Hopefully this helps! good luck!
  2. While looking into prospective grad schools for SLP, I've noticed that some offer a masters of science in SLP and others offer a masters of art in SLP. This may be a stupid question, but..what exactly is the difference between the two? And which is better to have?
  3. Since the beginning, I've always thought that I would prefer working with children (I originally was planning on majoring in early childhood ed!) as an SLP in either a school setting or clinical setting. Now, a senior Communication Disorders major, I am unsure as to whether I'd enjoy working in a medical setting, school setting, or clinical setting more. Maybe I'd like to do a little of each..? So..my question for all of you is...does anyone know what SLP grad programs focus more on school-based SLP, which focus more on medical based SLP, and which focus on both aspects? This will be beneficial for me when applying to schools. Feedback is appreciated! Thank you!
  4. I am retaking two classes within my major where I got B-'s. My advisor (who was the professor of one of them) thought it was a good idea, as long as I was absolutely POSITIVE that I would do better in them the second time around.
  5. Does anyone know what states SLPA's are legal in? I've heard that they are only legal in certain states. I was considering becoming an SLPA if I don't get in to any grad schools in the fall 2016 application season.
  6. Congratulations! If you don't mind me asking, what was your GPA and GRE scores? I will be applying to graduate schools for SLP for Fall 2016 soon and I am nervous as ever!
  7. mind sharing where you got in?
  8. Oh well that doesn't sound bad! Thanks for the help, I'll keep this in mind if I end up applying to schools that require personal interviews
  9. Is this school considered to be competitive or less competitive? I've looked into their SLP masters program a bit (although I won't be applying until Spring 2016) and realize that they are a newer program. On EdFind their GPA acceptance rate is low but I wasn't sure if maybe they just haven't updated it in a while. Thanks for the help!
  10. Hello everyone So, I won't be applying to graduate programs until Spring 16, but..I know that some schools require a personal interview in addition to your application. Just out of curiosity, what kind of questions do they ask? Thanks!
  11. Hello all! I am currently an undergrad Communication Disorders major and am striving to one day become a certified SLP! I have just finished up my junior year at my university and am about to begin my senior year this fall..let the stress of grad school applications begin ..anyway, I will applying to grad schools this upcoming winter to hopefully be accepted somewhere for the fall of 2016! (honestly..I'll go anywhere that takes me!) After this past semester, I was only able to raise my overall GPA to a 3.211 and my major overall GPA to a 3.513. Granted, I am taking a few summer courses to help boost my GPA and still have another semester to go before applications are due, but I'm beginning to feel as if there is no hope for me I have not yet taken my GRE's but plan on taking them next semester and am doing whatever possible to prepare myself for them. I participate in a lot of extra curricular activities, as well. I'm a member of a social sorority (Delta Zeta), where I am required to do at least 15 hours of community service per semester. Also, our national philanthropy is speech and hearing, so we do a lot for places such as the Starkey Hearing Foundation and Gallaudet University. This summer I also plan on volunteering in my free time at a local children's therapy center near my hometown. I also am an active member of my university's NSSLHA chapter, where I just recently was elected to be the SAI Representative for the chapter. I am also a peer mentor for underclassmen at my university, as well. If anyone has any advice or guidance for me PLEASE comment and let me know! I would greatly appreciate any feedback. I will do anything it takes to just get in a least somewhere..
  12. I wondered that too! If you find an answer please let me know! Also, are the GPAs listed on Edfind the average GPA out of all the students they accepted that semester? Or is it just the average GPA(s) that they tend to look for?
  13. No thank you! this was very helpful
  14. What are some SLP grad schools that focus on your last 60 hours more than overall GPA?
  15. Well I am in a sorority (Delta Zeta) at my university, which I know sounds pretty redundent and unrelated to our field of study, but our national philanthropy is actually speech and hearing and we do a lot of volunteer work and fundraising for speech and hearing organizations. I am also a member of my university's NSSHLA organization where I do plan on eventually holding a leadership position, as well. I am a volunteer peer mentor at my university and do a lot of shadowing at a nearby children's therapy center when I am home over breaks. Does any of this seem like it would boost my application or should work on doing more?
  16. Stressing about grad school and I'm only a junior.. -.- *sigh*

thank you! trying to stay positive and work hard these next 2 semesters to boost my GPA!

  17. What did you ever end up doing? I'm currently in a similar boat. I have 3 more semesters to raise my GPA! What schools did you apply to? Any acceptances or wait lists?
  18. I am currently an undergrad Communication Disorders major in my junior year (second semester junior in a few weeks when spring semester starts) and my GPA, both overall and major, are pretty low and rather embarrassing :/ my overall GPA is a 3.19 and my major GPA is a 3.3. I know this is really low and my chances of getting into grad school currently are slim to none. I plan on working my butt off my next 3 semesters to raise it, if at all possible. I have not yet taken my GRE's but plan on taking them probably the first semester of my senior year and I also plan on studying super hard for it, as well! But, if by some reason I can't raise my GPA very much, i was wondering if anyone had any tips for me on what schools I should apply to where I would have more of a chance of being accepted with my current GPA. I would really appreciate feedback! Thanks!
