  1. Wait, what?!
  2. In the United States (and other places, sure, but this is the focus of this discussion) the discrimination need result from any conscious view of others as inferior. We have ingrained, unconscious, perspectives of each other, (pernicious stereotypes) which unconsciously color how we are perceived both in terms of moral value and as epistemic agents. The cages which confine certain peoples and prevent them from the same opportunities that privileged persons have are already in place. Doing 'nothing' (ie, pretending racism, sexism, ableism, etc, do not exist), maintains the cage. The barriers are still there and will remain unless forcibly removed. I'd take a look at some of the work of people like Rebecca Kukla, Kristie Dotson, and definitely read some of the work on oppression by Marilyn Frye, and others.
  3. I was thinking the same thing, whilst sipping on the tears of privilege lost.
  4. It gets better the second year
  5. How come I can't give people negative reputation at conferences? Like, when they ask a question after the presentation--how awesome would it be if we could just press a button on the podium...
  6. *blinks* Of course it is
  7. I was hoping for some news from Canadian schools today.
  8. This application season got me like
  9. I feel like I want to join you all in solidarity, but I didn't apply to Wisconsin. However, I have no doubt that, had I applied, I'd be rejected too.
  10. Even Plantinga admits that Plantinga's ontological argument for the existence of God is not an argument for the existence of God. But I'm a little rusty when it comes to reading bad interpretations of modal logic. I can't really make heads or tails of that post.
  11. I'm sorry to hear that. One thing I wish was more universally recognized was how much bullshit many of us are dealing with aside from the simple academics. Good luck to you!
  12. I just don't understand ... who does that? What is the point of trolling people waiting on PhD results? Some people really need a hobby... -like rock collecting
  13. Ha! I've been a couple of public forms that had particular groups or threads for philosophy. Sadly, it was filled with angsty teenage nihilists misreading Nietzsche, varying Fight Club enthusiasts, and the occasional anti-natalist. And that was at the best of times.
  14. What the hell happened to the formatting and my awesome Continental drift joke?! *throws computer*
  15. Good point and good luck!
  16. I find most public philosophy forums like that to be roughly akin to the comments section on a Fox News article. However, it has been quite a while. Perhaps things have changed.
  17. Conciseness? I don't want to sound dismissive but I've never heard of a program wanting a writing sample anywhere near that length? Unless that's what they asked for, I guess. My understanding is that's the kind of writing that they want to train you to do.
  18. I'm in the former school of Kierke-guard. I teach him fairly often. It's not nearly as scary as when teaching Merleau Ponty or Nietzsche...
  19. I always giggled at this one
  20. I don't think so, I' think we're misunderstanding the difference between types of contact. Once the admittees have been finalized, there is nothing stopping a particularly excited POI from calling and telling someone "Hey, don't tell anyone I told you but, congratulations..." I think that's what's happening, at least in some cases.
  21. Yeah, that's what I was referring to. I didn't want to type it lest I somehow bring it about again. Now I'm going to go back to writing quizzes for my critical thinking class and pretend I didn't just think ^that.
  22. I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing this
  23. Maybe but I've heard about some issues with Canadian schools not being able to take int'l students these last couple of years. Not WO specifically, but it still worries me.
  24. Thanks! I appreciate that. And I've definitely heard of people getting rejected from all of their mid-level schools and getting accepted into their long shot. Having at least one WL helps. A bit.
  25. Rejected from UCSD. Email arrived at midnight. Whelp. That leaves only the schools I have no chance in hell of getting in.
