  1. 1 admit w/ waitlist funding, 2 waitlists, 4 rejects, 1 to go. Argh,, the waitlist funding is a bit annoying..

What does that even mean? Your funding is dependent on a grant coming in/not? Ugh that's annoying.

funding is dependent on other people declining=(.

  2. Just to echo this, the snow has been really bad in the Northeast so I don't doubt that there can be delays!
  3. Has anyone heard back from UC-Irvine's Culture & Theory program yet? No one has posted anything and it seems to be a bit later than usual for results.
  4. accepted to 1st program but waitlisted for funding. Any tips? Call? e-mail?

I'd email them thanking them for the good news, that you're still very much interested in attending the program and express your hope that funding will become available. If the program is your first choice, I'd throw that in there, too.

  5. Hi all, I was recently accepted to my 1st PhD program and was just wondering which tablet to get for grad school? I have not crossed over to apple products yet and still use a PC ultrabook. The ultrabook is great but the unreliability of wifi is annoying. The surface pro 3 has a 10% off for those with .edu e-mails. Do apple products have the same offer or no? I guess my main questions are : How would you rate the Durability, Organization? etc, How friendly is the apple interface? Are all apps/programs available across Microsoft and apple (barring Microsoft office) platforms? Thanks =)!
  6. Just got my 1st acceptance to Indiana University, Bloomington but waitlisted for funding. STILL SO HAPPY.
  7. I feel like I am in a similar place. Rejected to 3, waitlisted to 2, no news from 3. As an undergrad I did had conferences, a publication, an honors thesis, and presentation under my belt. I was feeling a bit confident but then rejections are starting to roll in. Usually, it is about fit. In your SOP you have to make sure you are driving the point of why you fit in this particular program and why that particular program is unique for your needs, research, and future prospects. Don't take the rejections personally, sometimes it takes 2 cycles to get in instead of 1... I know it sounds horrible but it has nothing to do with your intelligence or ability to produce scholarly work. Sometimes, the application process is just this random thing and becomes similar to winning the lottery. Think of it in Hunger Games fashion, you can increase your chances of getting called but there is no sure way to be called and the person who could be lacking would be the Primrose and get lucky (well unlucky in comparison to the reference but I think you get it). Best <3!!!
  8. Haha, yes, my reserach revolves around all 3 of those and includes performance studies as well (cannot really say much more.. do grad admissions check these, haha?...). As i said earlier, Brenda Weber is like my dream person to work with at IUB! Well, with Minnesota the waitlist decision was pretty much telling me the candidates have until April 15th, which is the general stand-by rule for any university. Thus, it is really weird a school is forcing you to decide by the 15th. check with general graduate admissions because a department cannot go against the general admission rules and regulations and cannot force students to accept or reject an offer unless that is their policy, albeit rare does exist in some universities. And yes again, that early decision deadline is crazy. I know law schools have early decision policies, which bind you to attend a certain school but PhD programs in interdisciplinary studies do not have that stand-by rule. Hope this helps =)!
  9. If you have a fully funded acceptance, I do not think anything can really re-motivate you. Sorry for being brutally honest. Regarding the early decisino request, you can request an extension by a week or so saying you want to visit, if you haven't, and plan out your life opportunities so you know you are making the correct choice and that it is not a rushed choice. Something along the lines of this. Congrats on your 2 acceptances. my fingers are crossed for the wait list with Minnesota (I really want to go there, IUB, or UofM).
  10. Uhh, 2 waitlists 2rejections( possibly 3) 3 schools left... Uhh...

  11. Haha, corgis are so popular and in demand! I don't think many people would willingly give up a corgi =(. I could not fathom giving up any dog, in that sense. At least you have connections at U of M. I'm hoping for the best from U of M. Yeah but I do remember U of M having a really long waitlist (this could be good or bad). I guess we can only be hopeful! =)
  12. Congrats!!!! I am hoping to hear good news over here, still.. *fingers crossed*
  13. Yes, same here. They give out decision usually before Valentine's Day. Nothing says happy "single awareness day" as "we regret to inform you" or "we are pleased to inform you" Best wishes to all
  14. Well, congrats about Minnesota! (I've been waitlisted and it is one of my top choices so I'm a bit jealous, haha...make a decision soon...haha). Seriously, if you hear good news form UCSC and Rutgers, it is really up to your career goals and which program and faculty as well sa location fits the best with you. I think some research about each of the faculty (if you didn't already do so) and research about each of the location is really a must before you could make any decisions. I am still waiting to hear back from 4 other programs but I would definitely pick the one that I believe fits my interests and research goals the best and is located in a place where I can achieve those. Edit: Although Minnesota is cold, is does have a city life. Although Rutgers (NJ in general) is boring, it is about 1-2 hours away from NYC, where you can pretty much do or go anywhere. These are some factors to consider. There will be pros and cons to the locations, but only you know what you want. Hope that helps=)
  15. Have you heard back from Minnesota yet? They made their decisions already. Minnesota and Rutgers are pretty well-known. Placement records at both are excellent. I think if you want to focus on a particular field look at both Minnesota's and Rutgers' course offerings and see which field fits you best. If you get into both, then it depends on your preference and where you wish to live (Minnesota is brutally cold and NJ is well boring but not as cold?). UCSC is rather a new program and placement is really known about that yet. I don't know too much about UCSC.
