I am so happy to see decisions here. Keep 'em coming e'erbody! This is the great waitlist shuffle!
-
Geeze! Nice!!! Congrats!
-
Congrats! That sounds like a really hard decision. Isn't it hard to let go of offers? Geeze.
-
I am one such person. Why on earth isn't PGR 20-25 good enough????
-
Congrats on getting funding! And thanks for turning it down! I know someone on their waitlist who may benefit from this!
-
Remind your friends who have offers too. Those who are most likely to sit on offers needlessly (opting to reply last minute or for the offer to expire) are less likely to see these pleas for help here. If you know someone who has 3 or more offers, tell them they need to be considerate of the admissions committee and for those who are on the waitlist.

You gave me two negative reps for this? I voice what I thought was a genuine professional concern and makes visits awkward, and you take my posts as inappropriate/offensive to the forum community? I am talking exclusively about cases where their hair is greasy and disheveled, and you can smell them across the room.

Not expected. I wouldn't unless they ask for it. Some do ask. I would say something along the lines of I'm turning down in favor of another offer.
-
Congrats! Likely to take it?
-
Congrats on making a decision! Great program!
-
Thanks! I know people on the waitlist at each!

I'm glad you are taking it well. This is the second time I'm on Purdue's waitlist, and I may find out last minute (11th hour) in all likelihood that I will be rejected. I imagine it's even more frustrating to apply 3 times and strike out all three. How many apps does SLU get? If they get 100 apps for 3 spots, that's terrible odds given their ranking.

Perhaps a reasonable margin, but that would mitigate worries only if I had not known they stayed at a hotel... Even so, current grad students are without the excuse and, percentage-wise, the more frequent offender.

What I don't understand is why philosophy students don't keep up on hygiene. At the two schools I've been to and at my program, prospective students (and some grad students)* have clearly not showered in that day or in perhaps days. Their negligence indicates something I would consider inappropriate and unprofessional; as an administrator, I would consider this an orange flag regarding the worthiness of investment (will they not work well with coworkers? will they be malodorous in front of students? will they not make a good impression on the market, and thus not place well?) * not talking about current grad students at my program. But more than one prospective student thus far.

Does anyone know if Agamben takes graduate students?
Duns Eith replied to schlechtdurchdacht's topic in Philosophy
How about you ask him or the program in a sensitive way? That's not the kind of thing I'd expect to be public knowledge, nor shared via forum. -
I hope we see a post in this thread every day until April 15.

Congrats! Must feel good to have a decision! (even if your hand were forced, so to say)
-
Surprise! He chooses WMU instead.

Same here. Sad panda. I heard through the grapevine that they only accepted 2 spots in the program. Can anyone confirm that? P.S. Got a formal letter from UPenn saying I was rejected (check the portal). But I solicited it a week ago. P.P.S. That's the last school! The only way I may get another offer is if I am accepted off a waitlist. (Purdue) ... ::Crosses-fingers::

High time someone call out PhD programs about this. Happened to me, and three of my colleagues. Unlike Tim O'Keefe, I can see one good reason for the practice: the dept can stay non-committal when it comes to tough decisions, and why should the dept take on risk when they need not? The flexibility is valuable to the department. But I agree with To'K that it could at least be communicated.

Someone posted that they were waitlisted a while ago.

I guess I am thinking about reforms so as to not engender such power structures in the first place. If the charges are true, there's something that has been happening psychologically and socially within that work environment that is not healthy. The disparity of power probably plays into it.
