  1. Hey guys, Could someone clarify how research topics from your MA (or MEd) in psychology are linked to your PhD in terms of research topics? I'll be pursuing a Masters in Counselling Psyc next year and, if things work out, a PhD down the road. I just want to know that if I get into a doctoral program after completing my masters, whether I"ll have to pursue the same topic as my masters thesis at the doctoral level. If it all works out, I'd love the option to pursue a specific topic during my masters and then investigating something else if the PhD works out (but in the same discipline of counselling psych). Does anyone have experience with doing a masters at one university (under the same discipline) and then completing a pHd in a different institution with a different research topic? For instance, if I research childhood learning disabilities for my masters in counselling, could I then research PTSD in adults at the PhD counselling level? I'd like to know how far ahead I should be thinking when choosing my masters thesis topic. Thanks so much
  2. Hey everyone, Are there any past or current Western MA/MEd Counselling Psychology students who could speak to this program's interview process? I would appreciate any advice on how to best prepare. I believe it's a three person interview panel and I've consulted this resource http://www.unc.edu/~mjp1970/Mitch%27s%20Grad%20School%20Advice.pdf but it's an American Clinical Psyc doctoral document. Besides reviewing my CV, Statement of Interest, and practicing for standard interview Q's (what are your strengths, etc), was the vibe of the interview more focused on the applicant's research interests or was it geared to more practical clinical experience? As an interviewee, were you expected to know how to respond to scenario based/ethical questions (ie. what would you do if a client mentioned that they wanted to harm themselves, etc)? Any advice would be much appreciated. If you haven't interviewed at Western but have interview experience from other Canadian Counselling Psyc programs, please feel free to share how to best prepare for this. Thanks guys and good luck!
  3. Hey guys! Glad to see a canadian counselling psyc thread on here. I received a western interview date but haven't heard back from anywhere else. Applicant 3211, could I PM you about any general advice on the interview process after your experience at UC? I haven't heard from them yet, but I'm trying to find more resources for counselling psych interview prep in general. there doesn't seem to be a ton of info online for canadian schools. If you wouldn't mind sharing how you prepared and what the experience was like, please let me know Good luck everyone!
  4. Hey folks, New member here and I have a few questions regarding the GRE general test for Canadian clinical psyc applicants (the Masters that leads to PhD route). If anyone has insight (or a link to a resource) please let me know. Thanks in advance! 1) I’m starting my prep now, and I just completed a sample ETS test with a VR 156 and QR 147. Yikes! Could anyone provide me with a general GRE target that I should be aiming for in order to even consider applying? I’ve found it difficult to find these numbers online, besides this document which seems to have very low numbers compared to the stats posted on gradcafe : http://magoosh.com/gre/2013/gre-scores-for-social-science-programs/ 2) After perusing the forums, it looks like the Official ETS Guide to the GRE and the Manhattan 5lb book are well reviewed resources. Does anyone have insight on preparing a study schedule for 4-6 weeks of prep using these resources? A popular one seems to be the Magoosh one month guide, but I’d like to use the ETS and Manhattan resources if possible. Any other tips on greatly improving my score would be very much appreciated! I’m a native English speaker with a high psych gpa and I was surprised at how challenging the Reading comp and Vocab (especially the fill in the blanks) were…any comments on these particular issues would be great. Thanks guys!
