  1. My alma mater is FSU so I'm slightly biased but you absolutely can't go wrong in choosing FSU. If you ever had any questions about life in Tallahassee or anything aside from the actual Criminology program, feel free to PM me! I'll be as candid as I can be  :P

  2. Hi! Sorry, I wasn't sure where else to post this.

I'm currently in my final semester of undergrad, and I was wondering how grad schools will react if they see that I did a Pass/Fail in my final semester. Would it even matter at all? I fully anticipate passing it (of course), but I also don't want them to think I couldn't get an A in the class (1000-level elective that is a lot harder than I thought). It doesn't count towards my degrees or anything... and not even my graduation requirements. It's just an extra class that doesn't really have any bearing on anything, I just needed it to keep myself as a full-time student.

So is this an okay thing to do? I've already been accepted to schools and everything, so that won't be an issue.

  3. Oh ok, so I'm not the only one. Thanks Bubandis. And I'm actually in the same position - I'm 99% sure I'm not going there (it's between MSU and FSU for me), but I already spent ~40 dollars on the application that I said "what the hey", especially because I only applied to those three schools.

And thanks notrealusername - LET'S GET THAT SEMINOLE SPIRIT UP IN HERE

  4. Has anyone heard anything from Florida? It looked like acceptances should start coming in judging by past years, but it's so difficult to tell since it doesn't look like many people post their results. I thought I saw one or two people on here who applied there. Anyways, my portal has changed (I can't access it anymore, something about wanting a more "decentralized" process), and I was contacted at the beginning of the week asking for my official transcripts (even though the application said we only needed unofficial??).

  5. I lived on campus for two years (first in dorms, second in apartment-style), and I was ASTOUNDED by the amount of kids who would bring their dirty laundry home to do it there, presumably so their moms/dads can do it. I wouldn't be so surprised if I had seen it once, but it was a relatively common thing, even once I moved to the upperclassmen apartment-style. I think we all hate doing laundry, but it's such a simple thing that you kind of need to learn to do when you live on your own...and the laundry machines were in the same building!

  6. Hello!

I have been accepted into a program that is hosting an Open House at the end of the month. The problem is.. I have absolutely no idea what to wear S:. The events consist of an evening (seems like a casual-ish event hosted by grad students) followed by a full day of... well, the Open House.

One, It's very northern, so will likely be (very) cold.

Two, I'm a female, so I don't think I can go with the good ol' dress shirt-tie-dress pants combo.

I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks you!!

  7. Well done to the Arizona admits... looks like they're on the up in IR. I met Thies at a conference and he's nice and very approachable.. and somehow manages to publish a ludicrous amount. Will Moore on the way there too which from my perspective makes it look like a great place ;). Trying to remember why I didn't apply..

Meant to ask for clarification on this -- are you referring to FSU's Will Moore?

  8. Sorry all, rejection is never easy (I say that now, come first rejection I'll be crying like a baby...)

I doubt this will make anyone feel better, but I was rejected from my top choice in undergrad and it's the best thing that could have happened because I have so, so much love for the school I wound up going to. I feel that the experience is unparalleled to anything else I could have had, and I mean that with every ounce of myself - that I am glad I got rejected from the other school.

I think rejection also means a lot less for a Ph.D. program since you're chosen based on so much more criteria, including being a "good fit". It's a crapshoot I guess, but I'll echo what everyone else has said and say "you only need one".

  9.

I do love how applicable game theory is to...everything, really; as a Professor said to me: "Once you see...the game theoretical logic...life is all games and subgames, it is all strategy..."  I'm hoping to use game theory and network analysis to look at the flow of information on social networks.  Pretty hot topic these days, eh?

Good luck to you too, Little Mac!  Hey, all we need is for one to say 'yes,' right?

Haha, that's pretty great - I had a Professor say nearly the exact same thing to me (and also something along the lines of "being able to take advantage of every interaction you have with your friends and family"). And ah, that sounds quite neat - I'd like to hear more about what that entails!

Is anyone here finishing up their Bachelor's or Master's this semester? Also, somewhat off-topic question, but in case anyone knows... What's the difference between a B.S. and a B.A. in Political Science (or the social sciences in general)? I've gotten a lot of mixed answers from researching it, so I'm assuming there's no concrete answer... but thoughts are nice :S

  10. Hey, bromo-sapien!  What programs you looking at/what you looking to work on?

I applied to the programs at MSU, FSU, and UF, and am interested in IR and behavioral game theory/political methodology. I... like to think it's a good thing (??), since it is where the programs I'm applying to appear to be the least saturated (aside from just IR, of course).

Would love to be able to focus primarily on game theory, though. Good thing it's extremely applicable within (nearly) all of the subdisciplines in poli sci!.... and also applicable to many other fields.... including video games.... like Virtue's Last Reward.... (hoping someone has the slightest idea of the Zero Escape series)

Best of luck to you - looks like you have some pretty amazing schools on your list.
