  1. Thanks! Right so if 5 acceptance students decline Columbia, they might admit 5 off the waitlist. (Of course, they might initially accept more students than they actually want, knowing that at least a few will then them down.) But what I actually had in mind with the question (and I realize now I didn't make this clear) was whether you had any idea approximately what portion of the incoming class in years' past has been students admitted off the waitlist? (Which may be the same as the number of initially admitted students who declined their offers?) I know that NYU, for instance, rarely admits anyone off the waitlist, as their initial offers are almost always accepted. (Accordingly, wait-listed students are told upfront that their chances of acceptance are extremely slim.) Columbia, I would imagine, doesn't often admit *many* wait-listed students, but I really don't know. I was hoping you might have some general idea of how likely it is that Columbia will admit anyone from the waitlist, based on past trends. But thanks for the response you did give. I'm trying to figure out if I should have any hope of being admitted when it's probably almost impossible to make accurate guesses about my chances at this point, since, as you pointed out, there's a good deal of randomness and craziness involved here. :-) Thanks again!
  2. Hi! I'm waitlisted at Columbia. My AOI are epistemology, philosophy of mind, and metaethics (especially reasoning and rationality). My questions for you are 1. Do you have any idea how large the incoming class typically is? 2. Do you have any idea how many students are typically admitted off the waitlist? I've been told it's a "short" waitlist and that it's not linearly- ordered. I know those (especially the second) are not easy questions. But I appreciate any help you can provide!! I will be at the prospectives visit.
  3. Thanks! Epistemology/ mind/ metaethics. Good luck with ucsd, it's a great program (and wasn't easy to decline!).
  4. Thanks! I did apply to a LOT of programs.
  5. Waitlists: Columbia, Wisconsin Madison, Cornell. Anybody planning on turning down Columbia? Anybody think there's a shot I will get in off the waitlist? :-D I'd really like to be in New York. I removed myself from the UW Madison waitlist last week. Acceptances: UNC, UCLA, northwestern, UCSD, WUSTL, UC Riverside, Maryland, UCSB, Johns Hopkins, georgetown, Miami I have declined all but the first three. (Some fairly recently, so this could mean someone on the waitlist being accepted next week). I will decline NU this week. Also, a note about UCLA. I was told on the phone that they have an internal waitlist. So if you haven't heard from them yet, you may be on it. (And if you're on it, there's hope that I at least may decline UCLA. Right now it's between UCLA and UNC (and columbia, IF I get in off the waitlist.) Rejections: harvard, yale, mit, CUNY, Rutgers, nyu, Berkeley, usc, Chicago, brown. Hope this helps! Any info about Columbia would be much appreciated.
  6. I'll be declining my wait list offer soon.
  7. I just declined an offer from JHU, hopefully this helps someone! Anyone planning on declining Cornell? :-D .
  8. Has anyone had NO news from Wisconsin? (I haven't.)
  9. I'm wondering how many people have *not* received rejections from CUNY yet. I figure if more than 8-10 people have not, then it's safe to say they probably have not released all their rejections yet. I, for one have not received a rejection. Neither has my friend who has applied.
  10. Waitlisted at Cornell. Accepted at UC Riverside. Will almost surely take myself off of the waitlist, and turn down UC Riverside. Hope this helps someone.
  11. Accepted to UCSD, Georgetown, and WashU today ... what a day! congrats everyone.
  12. I've been accepted at UCLA!!!!!!! 3a/0 w/3 implied r/23
  13. Thanks for the info! That's really helpful.
  14. Hey all, I am wondering how Chapel Hill is for young families, and in particular, mixed race families. My partner is African-American, I'm Caucasian, and we have two young children. Would Durham be better, given the greater diversity? Although I know the triangle is in general a liberal, well-educated area, are things different in the surrounding towns, as it gets more rural? More generally, how are the parks, childcare centers, and other kid-related things? (zoos? museums? YMCAs?) Thanks for any and all advice!
  15. Hello all, Have been reading posts for a few weeks and decided to join since everyone I know in real life is sick of hearing me talk about this. I will have my MA in Philosophy this Spring. This is my first time applying to PhD programs. I've applied to 20 programs (yes, I know, that's a shit ton). Anyway. I have been accepted to Northwestern and University of Miami so far. No other news (good or bad) yet. Best of luck to everyone!
