  1. I'm not a POC so maybe I'm naive but at least in the areas of Boston around BU/NU it's a very diverse community. I have a lot of friends from undergrad who are from all over the world and who have vastly different skin tones from myself, and none of them ever once complained about Boston being a racist or segregated city. To Machaon01, I'm sorry that your experience was a bad one, but I wouldn't let it rule out the city completely.
  2. If you're referring to Northeastern University in Boston, MA, I would just like to say that I went there for undergrad and during my time there the school rose consistently in the rankings. It is now considered a top 50 US research university, so I would hardly think that attending would bring you down. In fact, both in the job market and in applying to graduate school, I have found my NU degree to be a boon. If you're talking about a different Northeastern, then sorry for wasting your time.
  3. I've been accepted to four programs, but only one of them has given me financial aid info. How long does it usually take for schools to tell you about funding? It would really help me to narrow the field if I knew what I was getting from each school.
  4. First rejection stings a lot more than it should after 4 acceptances.

Rejections hurt, my first rejection really showed me how much I was motivated to keep trying.

  5. Thought I'd chime back in: I got my letter from Tulane today - it was the same letter from the email, just one sheet of paper and folded in a plain envelope. If I didn't already know I'd gotten in, I would've assumed I was rejected!
  6. I'm a Canadian living in America and while I HATE it when people assume I'm American (because of the negative stereotypes), I don't hate Americans in general. I'd say that's basically how most Canadians are, and a lot of my UK relatives feel similarly (not that they're ever mistaken for Americans). If you're looking to study in a country that has close ties to the US, as both Canada and the UK have, you shouldn't have any problems. In fact, I think they'd make more fun of you for being from Winnipeg
  7. I absolutely love Boston! It's a great city, all the perks of city living without being overwhelmingly huge or anything. I would happily go back there, if given the opportunity!
  8. Thanks for the advice! Also I meant while I was studying. Not that I would complain about working there afterwards!
  9. Washington University in St. Louis sent me the standard run of the mill folder, it didn't even relate to acceptance on the front. Columbia didn't send anything in the mail, apparently all their forms are online. I only got into Tulane today so no clue if they're sending a package or just a letter. I heard from a webinar that if you get into Emory they send you a gift!
  10. I just got waitlisted for their Epi concentration so if anyone got accepted and is planning to go elsewhere I'd love you forever if you told Emory about it! I know Columbia is just as good but I really wanted to be able to work at the CDC.
  11. I went to college in Boston and it's a very expensive city to live in, basically as bad as NYC for housing etc. So that's another thing to consider.
  12. How should being waitlisted make me feel? I'm trying to treat it like a rejection but is that being unfair to myself?

The school where I was waitlisted last year told us at the interview "being waitlisted means we want to work with you" it's just they can't accept everyone at once.

It should make you feel good! It might simply mean that certain profs were advocating for your admission but were overruled by others on the committee. That is, they still want you but the numbers didn't play out for full offer of admission the first round. Hope some people decline offers and you get in!

  13. How many times a day is too many to check the Emory portal for my admissions decision? I feel like I'm crazy.
  14. Did anyone else that's waiting to hear from Emory get a weird financial aid message on OPUS today? Freaking out a little because it said I'm over the allowance for 15-16 but how is that even possible if I haven't even gotten in there yet??
  15. Thanks everyone. The majority of my schools told me 4-6 weeks for admissions decisions and it's been about that long for all of them now so I'm starting to lose it. Holding on to hope though and so should all of you!
  16. Waiting to hear back on the majority of my applications but today one of the schools (Emory) gave me a notice on their portal that I was over the financial aid limit for 2015-16. What does that even mean???? Did this happen to ANYONE else at all because I'm losing my mind.
  17. I've been checking the results postings here and am seeing other people get admitted to programs I've applied to, but it's complete radio silence on my end - I've only heard back from one school so far. Should I be nervous? Or is this normal?
  18. I know you said this is just an example but Michigan is basically an elite school and you've gotten full funding so obviously that's what you should choose. I think that if you don't have a strong preference either way, you should make the best financial decision, unless you really feel that choosing the "decent school" will hurt your chances of getting a job in the future.
