    CGS-M 2015-2016

Does anyone know what happens if you accept an offer early under a deadline BEFORE SSHRC is announced and then have it offered somewhere else? I know it is probably frowned upon, but I am stuggling with a mid-February decision when the CGS-M is something so big and not decided until April 1st...
  4. I'm looking to start my MA in Fall 2015 and so I figure that I will need to start thinking about the GRE eventually if I decide to apply for a PhD program for Fall 2017. The issue is that I'm Canadian and have never even heard of the GRE until talking about graduate school with my undergrad advisor. My primary questions are: 1) When should I start preparing? 2) Does everywhere require it? 3) Will it be difficult for someone who has not done any real math since Grade 11 math? I know these are probably dumb questions, but I have very little experience or knowledge of standardized testing. We have course-specific provincial examinations at the secondary level and general foundation skills assessments at the primary level, but it pretty much ends there.
  5. Well, I started translating the application fees into bottles of wine and the resulting number makes me sad and WANT the hypothetical wine. And then one I heard recently: "If I wanted to pay so much to be rejected, I would have just paid for an online dating service."
  6. Looks like they've started to go out. I see 2 MA ones and 1 PhD acceptance (though it says they did their MA there, so it might be a special case/ahead of schedule thing.)
  7. Vancouver is pretty friendly, though not the best for meeting people, in my experience. Anyone know what Toronto is like?
  8. Has anyone heard anything from UVic? I don't see much in the way of results posted. (I'm not indigenous studies, mind you.)

    Older students?

I think it depends what you study too. I found that my Education classes in undergrad had a higher average age. As someone who did 18-21 for my BA, I was always the youngest and had a harder time contributing when conversations involving life experience came up. On the flip side, I learned a lot from my classmates and valued the experience. Though it may be strange to be with younger students, take it as an opportunity to share and see different perspectives.
  10. I'll be 22 in Fall and doing my MA... somewhere.
  11. Sounds like one of those pesky automated things that has nothing to do with any decision other than a system set to remind anyone with an account to update their password every X months. But, doesn't mean anything bad, so that's good too!
  12. Now I'm thinking about admission decisions like those dumb check yes or no notes What about Matt Nathanson - Answering Machine? The first line mentions letters, so a little too close to home, maybe. "Try and breathe some life into a letter Losing hope, we'll never be together." Or, for the assumed rejections and waiting for the inevitable, Robyn - Call Your Girlfriend? Like, the knowing that it is coming and waiting for "the talk". "Call your girlfriend It's time you had the talk Give your reasons Say it's not her fault But you just met somebody new Tell her not to get upset, second-guessing everything you said and done" This is a good thread.
  13. Victoria is beautiful. I recommend it. Ocean and trees
  14. I got woken up by an email at 6AM and it was one of those moments where I thought that it absolutely HAD to be U of T, because it's the only school I applied to out east and them emailing at 6AM PST (9 for them) made so much sense. Turns out it was just from Hudson's Bay about a sale. I preceded to fall back asleep and have a grad admissions nightmare. /sigh Maybe I'll get some good news today.
  15. Thanks for the insight, guys. I think I'll send an email to UVic and U of T to ask when they will be making their decisions. Depending what they respond with, I suppose I'll go from there. The real thing I'm worried about is the CGS-M competition.Like, if I say yes to UBC and I'm unsuccessful there, it would be really hard if another school offered it to me. ($17,500 is a significant amount of funding.)
  16. Is the results search page down? Now how am I going to obsessively refresh for any U of T results?

    CGS-M 2015-2016

I got a similar thing from UBC regarding my application. I haven't heard from the other schools, so I'm wondering if I have more of a shot there or if they just have a different process that includes more communication.
  18. I know there's some kind of agreement of generally respecting a reasonable timeframe for accepting offers in the United States, but I am not aware of such a thing in Canada. I'm currently applying four places to do a masters degree and I have heard from one of them so far. They have offered me some funding for my first year (which should cover the tuition) and the program looks really cool. However, they want a response by the end of Feb and I'm worried that I won't hear back from the other schools I applied to in time to make an informed decision. I had hoped to contrast this program (English Language) against the best of the Linguistics programs that I was accepted to (ranked U of T, SFU, and then UVic). I've also applied for SSHRC funding (CGS-M) which I won't know about until later on. If I were to accept the offer, and I really am interested, would it be possible to go elsewhere if another institution offered more funding or the CGS-M?
  19. I'm looking at the masters program, but it was faster because I applied for SSHRC funding too (which had a December 1st deadline) and they contacted me mid-January saying they had reviewed it and were recommending me for admission (which I officially received on Monday). And I did my undergrad at SFU. My POI would be Pappas, who has been an incredible reference and help with the whole process. If you have any questions about SFU, feel free to shoot me a message. I know a lot of the professors.
  20. Posted in the wrong place, sorry!
  21. Accepted for UBC English (masters). I'm glad that I received an acceptance before anything else. (I'm so on edge right now.)
  22. I've been accepted to UBC's English Language program, but I have my fingers crossed for U of T Linguistics. Has anyone heard anything? Also, I know from expert sources that SFU is in the process of reviewing applications, there was a meeting yesterday and I don't think anything has been sent out.
