Remember, if this is what you want to do, the first round of rejections mean nothing. I got rejected from all 8 places the first time I applied to grad school. I learned a lot from that (both what I want, and what programs want from me) and the second time around was the charm.

Penn Rejected last night. That's it. This means I'm not going to be an ethnomusicologist; or at least not one with a degree that states as such. Trying to get my head around it... I'm not going to be professor. For the better part of a decade that was my scholastic aim. Instead, I'm going into the professional world. Stunned, really. Always saw myself as an academic: as someone who would become a professor of ethnomusicology. Unfortunately, the folks at the seven programs I applied to this year (my third and final round) did not. My life just changed in a very serious way and forever. As a consolation I'll have an Ivy League professional degree come June. As for the rest of my life, I fully intend to make the best of it. I congratulate all those who were admitted, and I wish everyone else going through the sting of rejection all of the fortitude and tenacity they need to do what is best for themselves next year; whatever that might entail. The Grad Cafe has been a source of comfort and clarification over these three application cycles and I am grateful for that. It is time to move on. Excelsior!

Solomonski: Take as much time as you need (well, until April 15). This is a big decision, and don't let worries about politics or wait lists force you to rush. Once you are 100% sure you don't want to attend a program, let them know-- there's no reason to wait. But until you know, take your time to really process the pros and cons of each program. Heck, for most schools, visiting day hasn't occurred yet. Unless the DGS inquires on when you will have an answer, you don't owe them an explanation of why you haven't accepted their offer yet. Sure, if you haven't chosen by April 1, you could email and let the DGS know what factors are preventing you from saying "YES!" But really, this is your time. Take it! DGS's are familiar with the process and expect students to wait until they receive all their offers, visit all the admitted schools, and weighed all the risks and rewards of the options.

Sending academic messages through email accounts that are not @.edu can look very suspicious for professors. Most of mine would skip over them immediately, especially if it was @hotmail.com!

I really wanted to go to Stanford, but didn't even get waitlisted. I'm counting on my Harvard waitlist now, I'll know for sure in the next day or two!

I emailed my DGS on Sunday asking for an update and she emailed back on Monday saying there will be a meeting on Monday to decide this and she'll keep me updated. She hasn't emailed me yet. Still nervously refreshing my inbox.

At Boston College there is one last offer out, and I am next on the waitlist. The school's my top choice. It's a coin flip. I spend my days willing this one person to not accept.

Hey person. Go someplace else. If you've spent this long thinking about it it clearly isn't a slam dunk decision for you. It would be a slam dunk for me.

Those are the kinds of things I say to them inside my brain.

If anyone else is waiting for Comp Lit at Harvard, I talked to the DGS today. She said the committee just needs to wait for one more admitted student to decline, then they'll reach the spot where they can start pulling from the waitlist!
