Is anyone else waiting to hear back about funding for one of their programs?

I'm waiting to hear about funding too.  I just got an email today about a funding opportunity I could apply for, but I'm going to wait and see if I'm offered a GA first I think.  Keep in mind, this is around the time programs are on spring break, so I imagine a lot of them will be making funding decisions once they get back from break.  Maybe next week?

So is the post-bacc GPA averaged with your other degree?

It depends on the grad school, as to how they evaluate your GPA.  Some schools will use a straight average to get your cumulative GPA, but others weight your last 2 years more heavily.  Some schools also put more weight on major GPA (COMD courses).  If you have specific schools you're interested in, look on their websites, email or call them to find out what they are most interested in.  Open houses are also a great opportunity to get that sort of information!

The USU COMD 3700 is an easy course. I would say that as long as the chem course you're taking isn't too hard, you'd be fine doing both. Now I wouldn't recommend it with the chem course I took back during my 1st bachelor's but that was designed to be a "weed-out" for pre-meds (what I was at the time), engineers, and science majors.

I second that.  3700 was easy, so as long as the chem class isn't insanely difficult for you, you should be fine!

    Hello,

I am just looking into alternative options in the event that I am not accepted to SLP this year and have came upon the Utah State university 2nd Bachelors degree program. I am looking for advice from non-US students as to whether it is even possible to enroll in this course, and if it is did you find that tuition was outrageous? The out-of-state tuition seemed pretty reasonable compared to other schools in the US so I was hoping that this may also be the case for international students (wishful thinking!).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Also, I am not familiar with the term of "2nd bachelors" does this mean we actually get another Bachelors degree or is it more of a certificate of completion?

    Thanks!

I'm not an international student, but I agree with @Crimson Wife and @slporbust2016.  I do remember having several international students in my classes, including at least one from Canada.  I'm finishing my 2nd bachelor's degree at USU this semester, and really liked the program.  Not only will you get the 2nd bachelor's degree (and no the degree doesn't say "online"), but you also get a really good foundation for graduate school.  I have learned so much through the program.  From what I can tell, USU's 2nd bachelor's program is well regarded in the field and among graduate schools.  I'll be starting grad school in the fall!

I was working part-time, and wanted to be sure to get that 4.0, so I spread my course load over 2 years (6 semesters) instead of one, taking 2-3 classes each semester.  Also, if you have any ASHA pre-reqs to meet, you can take them while you're at USU!  That would be courses like chemistry, statistics, etc.  The only course I had to take that USU didn't offer was neuroanatomy, but that was just a (new) specific requirement of my grad program, not something everyone needs.  I'm taking neuroanatomy at UWEC (also online) this semester, and it's really good too.

    Best of luck!

    Hello fellow speechies :)

I am still waiting to hear back from 5 out of the 6 schools I applied to, but I did get accepted into Seton Hall's program for the fall. They gave me 10 days to respond to their offer, and I was too worried to take the risk and not accept it so I put the deposit down and everything. If I get into another school I'd rather go to though, I am going to withdraw my acceptance. However, just in case I end up going to Seton Hall, I want to have a plan set in place, and that brings me to my question. Does anyone know of any Intro to Audiology courses I could enroll in online? I have to complete that course before the fall semester starts at Seton Hall and would rather take it online instead traveling to Seton Hall to take it over the summer. If anyone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you :)

I second @Cowsy's suggestion.  I am finishing my 2nd bachelor's at USU now, and took COMD 3700 as part of the program.  Great class, great teacher, good price, not a hard class, especially compared to some of the others at USU (I'm looking at you COMD 3400 and 5070!  )  Seriously though, USU is great, I'd go for it!

  6. Can anyone here share their experience of UMD (Maryland).  I've already decided for sure to attend, but it'd be nice if someone could share their experience in the program and any tips for someone just starting.  What do you wish you'd known before you started at UMD?  Any opportunities that I should definitely look into?  Also, does anyone have experience taking the UMD shuttle from Silver Spring metro?  That's my plan, and I'm curious if the shuttles generally run on schedule.  TIA!

Yes already did that! :) I actually got a position doing research this summer at UMD so they know I am very INTERESTED! I was in contact with them but they assured me I wouldn't know anything until April 15th and later. Is that the date they gave you to accept your offer? :)

I just went back to check, and I didn't see any specific date listed on my admission letter or portal, but April 15 is generally the agreed upon deadline for students to either accept or decline their offers.  I accepted my offer as soon as I got it, so it didn't really matter to me.  I'm sure they said somewhere that we needed to reply by 4/15 though.  Best of luck getting in off the waitlist!

  8. @intotheairwaves (or anyone else who's curious)

It's statistics I guess.  If two schools tie for a rank, then they get the average of the scores they tied for.  Let's say you have five schools, ranked between 1st and 5th place.  Schools A, B, C, D, and E.  A is 1st, B, C, and D tied for third.  And E is fifth.  Except, you average the numbers, to make it make sense, because really they tied for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place. Otherwise you get a big jump from 2nd to 5th.  So B, C, and D split the difference, and get ranked 3rd.  Does that make any sense?

(Sorry, my inner nerd is showing!  Can you tell I've spent a lot of time looking at the ASHA rankings?)

@SLPgradstudent, yup! That'll be fun - I'll look forward to meeting you in person. :)

@HayleyM, yikes... that's a lot of PhDs. And MAs. I don't blame you for being nervous.

@HayleyM, I'd check out this thread, on the "History" forum:

You might find some other history people who know more about UMD's history program.  As a speechie, I know nothing about other programs at UMD.

@esopha, I look forward to meeting you too!  I wonder if most of the people at the open house will be other accepted students.

I'm going to be visiting UMD this month, and then crossing my fingers about funding. It's a pretty nervewracking process!

Are you going to the 3/25 open house?  I'll be there!  Hopefully we'll know soon.  I keep checking the page, although not as obsessively as I had been checking for acceptances!

Admitted to UMD for an MA.  I have to decide between UMD and Boston College.  At least it's not quite as stressful as when I was waiting to hear.

I'm so sorry, I just saw this was under speech pathology.  I'm brand new to this forum, still working out the kinks.  I apologize!

That's okay! Welcome to GradCafe!  It's definitely less stressful for me now that I've heard back from schools.  Although, really my decision was made the moment I got into UMD.  It's my top choice school AND less expensive that my other option.  Are you leaning one way or the other, or does your decision depend on financial aid/GAs?

I think we have to take HESP 417 at UMD in the summer. That's my impression, anyway!

Although - aren't you doing a whole second bachelors? I'm just taking prereqs. Maybe the requirements are different?

Thanks @esopha.  Yeah, I'm finishing my second bachelor's this semester.  I don't think I can take a class over the summer because I'm getting married in June, and then we'll be on honeymoon for two weeks.  Hopefully it won't be an issue!

Got waitlisted at GWU still waiting to hear back from UMD, and Howard. I went to their open house, did you attend one? For both GWU and UMD. Depends in what you're searching for, GWU is beautiful.

I'm sorry @Rorororosy, I forgot to respond to your question about the open house.  Yes, I went to UMD's open house this year and last, and I went to GWU's application last year, but couldn't make it this year.  I grew up in the suburbs (or exurbs) of DC, so I had visited both campuses before.  The open houses were great to get more info about the details of the programs though.  I felt like that, more than anything else, helped me decide which school was right for me.  I appreciated hearing what the schools had to say about their programs and what opportunities they offered.  Although, when it comes down to it, it was a feeling of where I felt I belonged.

Yes, I'm hoping Maryland offers some kind of financial aid. That will really make or break the decision for me (or... make the decision much less confusing and stressful, at least!) because I love things about every program I got into.

I gently emailed the admissions secretary, and she mentioned:

If an incoming graduate student has accepted our offer of admissions and needs to take HESP 417 Principles and Methods, we do hold that spot for them. Your place in the program guarantees you a seat in the class.

And yes, the committee is still planning on releasing financial aid information in late march.

Which is all good info to have, I think.

Thanks for passing all that info along!  I can imagine it would be difficult to choose between the many great programs you were accepted into.  Tough choice, but a really good one to have!  I'm sure you will be able to make the decision that is best for you, once you have all the information available.  I am happy not to have to make a decision now, since I knew going in which school was my first choice, and only applied to one other.  My options were restricted geographically, so that narrowed it down for me significantly.  It was nerve wracking at the time, but easier now that I don't have to choose between great programs.

Does HESP 417 have an equivalent course at USU, or was that not something offered to us?  And I guess now I have something to look forward to at the end of March!

Good luck with UMD!  It seems like a lot of people got waitlisted this year, I don't remember if that was typical in years past.  Maybe they had more applicants this year?

GWU is beautiful, and has newer buildings and facilities when compared to UMD.  However, I won't be living on campus, UMD is much more affordable (even before financial aid) and I like the clinical opportunities that UMD has to offer.  It would probably have been a harder decision for me if the cost was more comparable, but it's hard to say no to in-state tuition!  I would like to graduate debt-free if possible.

Best of luck, I hope you get good news soon!

I just keep refreshing the GAship listings page, waiting for something to pop up... But yes, UMD is still in the running for me!

Yay @esopha!  It would be great to start with someone we "know" in our cohort!  I'm in the same boat, looking at the GA listings and refreshing the financial aid page.  I have both bookmarked.  :P  I think we may hear something by next week.  It would be fabulous to get some sort of funding offer!

  16. Bump.  Anyone here going to UMD?

UMD is my first choice, and I was waitlisted at GWU, the other school I applied to.  So I will definitely be at UMD this fall.  As far as why I want to be at UMD, I love the potential opportunities for placement that UMD offers.  I'm also really excited for the opportunity to try research, but the clinic is probably one of the biggest draws for me.

For stuff like GA or TA positions, does the school offer them to you or do you apply for them? I've talked with GAs on my campus (who are admittedly in a different field) who had to apply for their positions.

And, along those lines, would it be feasible for us to accept a GA position that wasn't speech / language related? I know the school I'm at right now has a lot of GA positions in stuff like student affairs and organizations.

@racoomelon, I'm not sure if it's the same for every school.  Where I'm going, I think about 1/3 of the class (of 25 students) are offered a GA.  But then there's the option of applying for a GA outside of the department, and I've heard they like speechies!  We're friendly folk, and generally type A, organized, driven, etc.  I would definitely ask your schools for more details, and see if there's a posting board for GAs at your university.  If you want funding, it seems like there are ways to find it.  I have heard that half-time (10 hours/week) GAs are preferred though, SLP students are too busy for full-time ones (20 hours/week).  Between class and clinic, they'll keep us pretty busy!

So my birthday was this past Friday and I decided to go out with some friends and my boyfriend to celebrate and get my mind off of Grad School Purgatory.  Well, I left that with a boyfriend and came back with a fiance'! I'm ENGAGED lol :D

Congrats @easybreezy!  And good luck.  My fiancé and I have been engaged since Valentine's Day (2015) and have less than 4 months to go before our big day!  It's been a wild ride, but I am so excited!!!  We're getting married in June, spending two weeks in Maui for our honeymoon, and then I'll start grad school in the fall!

@gingin6789, what a cool experience!  (Not so much the altitude sickness, but the professor's compassion :P)

Speech Science (with the WORST professor ever, she doesn't answer questions and her directions are always vague. I should have had an A on an assignment but some of her instructions were vague, so I didn't submit a picture in the right place and got a C instead.), and Phonological Disorders.

If I get into UofMaryland I'll have to take the Neuro class, but I don't know if I'll take it with Longwood or just in person at Maryland. I'd have to take a different class there during the summer too.

Puffer Fish, let me know if you get into UMD!  I'll be there in the fall.  I'm taking neuro now through UWEC online, and it's not too bad.  The teacher is really supportive and does his best to make the material accessible to everyone.  Also, open book exams :).  You should be able to take it at Maryland though, your first semester if that works better for you though.  Good luck to you, and everyone else who is still waiting to hear back!

I get that.  I was so happy when I got waitlisted for my 2nd choice school.  I hope you get in!  I would definitely contact them to express a continued interest in their program.  They'll want to know who has already accepted elsewhere and who is still wanting to attend their program I would think.
