Thats really interesting! I have never really seen myself as a "clinical" person so it helps to hear your experiences. What was the practicum process like and what kind of opportunities or agencies have students had?

You can find your own placement as long as your supervisor has a MSW or an equivalent degree  ( unlike u of t where the school matches you with an agency and your supervisor could be someone with only a BSW degree, I was actually matched to a crisis "call center" and then I just dropped out .lol  ) , but to be honest, the placement office is not the greatest and it doesn't really advocate for its students. If you are looking for a placement in hospitals then you may want to utilize your professional connection and network.

York received over six  hundreds applications for two years program... the chance of getting in is less than four percent.... Economy is tough now and free tuition could mean a lot to students.

It could also be because schools of social work that require students to do research - such as Mac, Ryerson, and York, fund students because of the fact students do research - which, in academic institutions, is a recognized form of currency and work (regardless of what becomes of it). Schools of social work that do not require students to engage in original research, such as Laurier, Windsor, and UFT, typically offer limited funding - reserved to a handful of scholarships.
That being said, I do think you are onto something about tuition fees being connected to "best placement opportunities". If you go on some of the hospital websites, you will see that they are affiliated with UfT, and that money is involved - which probably comes from tuition fees as the source of university's money making

Hi lindaMSW, feeling disappointed is a natural reaction. Its definitely tough to deal with it. I know I'm just echoing everyone else, but passion will always find a way. And if you are passionate you will fulfill your career dreams.  Its definitely a competitive program to get into, so don't feel discouraged or down. You will have other opportunities and more years! Many of the people I've spoken to who did their MSW did so in their mid-late 30s and even early 40s - so you have plenty of time. Keep trying and keep going! And don't let the fabricated success of one individual with questionable integrity make you feel discouraged. Get yourself a cupcake! Cry it out if you need to! And know you have supportive people around you who want you to succeed in what you are passionate about.

I just received the rejection letter from U of T 2 year program, I was crying the whole day and had to cancel tonight's V day dinner with my boyfriend. Anyway, I feel happy for those of you who get accepted to a MSW program, I also feel angry and disappointed because this is the third time I am applying to U of T!  I was placed on the waitlist last year but this year I didn't even make to the waitlist.  I don't understand how some people with hideous moral standard and responsibility can get into the program so easily  ( Like the person who brags about how  he was accepted to by all universities in Toronto when he was 23 and  is now doing his MD) and I have tried so hard and so many times with no success. Sorry for listening my rants, my self confidence is totally destroyed today. I hope everyone else has better luck than me this year.

Never compare yourself to others, especially someone who has a demonstrated history of lying in this forum.  Your time will come and when it does it will be all the sweeter.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you for the next cycle!

It's still possible to get a hospital placement with any school--just the specific hospital varies. Hospitals inside the University Health Network only take U of T students, hospitals that are not in the network are more flexible and will take other students (i.e. St. Michael's, St. Josephs, Bridgepoint (maybe on this one). I wouldn't put any credence into what this person said, super trolling comment, unless you know the head of social work at a hospital or someone with huge decision making power who can get you in then it really is about the school's connections. Most MSW programs have a practicum portal where they list available placements, while you are probably welcome to secure placements outside of it it is VERY difficult given how most placements are already set up prior and it would be a matter of asking social workers who didn't commit to being field instructors if they would be open to taking on a student. I'm currently at a hospital that has a few York students but they are more on the research/policy side of things rather than clinical. My friend is at a hospital with a few non U of T students who do have clinical placements, so it varies.
TL;DR: It's possible to get a hospital placement at any school, the options however might be limited depending on the specific hospitals and which placements your school acquired!

I did my undergrad there, I took two clinical courses at Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work and I did one collaborative research project with a U of T professor .  It was  my personal impression that the school is not as racially/culturally diverse as it claimed to be . Having said that, I really don't care about U of T MSW 's dominant pedagogical approach or its hegemonic discourse of institutional Whiteness; I don't lecture people on which school is better for them and which one is not; after all, we are all adults and we use our subjective judgement to make the best choice. I am just sharing my experience on the topic of diversity  to someone who is interested know, if you find this topic to be  offensive, then please ignore my thread.  Thanks and cheer

Why so many applicants only want go to U of T ? You may think  that U of T is affiliated with many hospitals in Toronto which can increase your chance of get a clinical placement in a health care institution; the truth is that hospital placement is highly competitive, and it is really not about which university you go to but the people you know from hospitals. Many of my York/Ryerson MSW  friends, including myself didn't attend U of T, we were still able to secure our placement in some of the best hospitals in Toronto. While many of my U of T MSW friends ended up in shelters , food banks and storefront community agencies ( nothing wrong with these places, but you probably wouldn't get much clinical experiences from these places). My point is that schools don't guarantee you a good placement, you need to utilize your social capitals and make the best out of your field education experience.
Pls, most employers do not care  about which university you graduated from, but what skills you have developed via your work/placement experience.
