  1. I am currently working in the Latin American field at Ohio State. While I am colonial, Donna Guy has been a superb resource. Her knowledge of political and labor issues in Argentina is great. I have tailored my generals reading list for my modern exam on Southern Cone materials. I highly encourage you to look into OSU.

I have a handlebar moustache on my index finger. When I teach or speak in public I hold my middle and index together so that it is always hidden.
  3. I'm from the Mobile/Pensacola area. The cold is not the only thing I am worried about. Not having sweet tea or grits is going to be a problem!

I would like to add that I have connections with an ABD student and a recent PhD graduate (who coincidently is coming to my undergrad/masters institution to work as a visiting professor) and they both love the graduate community at Ohio State. Unlike some of the so called "big name" schools, Ohio State graduate students have a strong bond and work together regularly on individual and joint projects. I got the impression that they also had rather tight relationships with their advisors as well. They seemed embarrassed to talk about it, but they are good friends with many of the professors. I have spoken to grad students at Ivy Schools and some of the top ten public schools and did not get this impression. A friendly atmosphere among grad students and professors is a definite bonus. Furthermore, I come from a city which has a high cost of living. Columbus will be a welcome relief. Location, graduate camaraderie, and close relationships with the faculty are simply icing on the proverbial cake of fantastic funding, faculty, and research resources.

    Well said.
  6. I think it depends on which are you want. I would go to Ohio State if you were interested in Early Modern or Modern Strategy. Kansas has a superb program for American. It just depends. UNC and Duke are perhaps the most well rounded though.

I am going for sure. May I ask what field you are in?
  8. I know I will. Hurricanes I can manage, but where I am from, 32 degrees is considered an extreme condition. I cant wait to enter the world of coats and furry hats.
  9. Hi! Just got into the PhD History Program! Super excited. I have never been out of the South before. Snow is going to scare me.
  10. Just got the email for it. Hardcopy to follow. OSU Graduate Assistant with a nice monthly take home.
  11. After weeks of poor sleep and refreshing Gradcafe, I found out I am going to Ohio State. How long did it take some of you to process the acceptance notification?
  12. I dont think the faculty and the administrative staff are on the same page. Maybe next week...
  13. I am not sure if we can really say. We dont know who reads this forum, but we have MAs from a medium sized public university in north-east Florida. Our advisor is perhaps one of the up and coming scholars in sixteenth-century Latin American history. I cant speak for Bumblebeeplan, but I had more PAs pay attention to me once I got my MA. Its not just an experience thing, but it means that the schools do not have to pay you as much to educate you. Thats just what I have seen, though. At this stage though, applying early doesnt mean you wont accomplish anything. It will help you see what schools want out of applicants so that the next time you are more attractive to the various committees. Good luck in any case, though.
