To how many programs did you (or will you) apply?
neuropsych76 replied to Arcadian's topic in Psychology Forum
I'm hoping to apply to 10 programs but yes I know exactly what you are going through! -
I'm glad you realize your question is incredibly vague and I hope you are prepared for my equally vague answer. For the fields you listed the minimum starting pay could be as little as 40k a year and up to 250k a year. Try to focus your interests a bit more and be prepared to know that generally only becoming a psychiatrist will have a high income of the fields you listed. So if money is important for you, try looking somewhere else

Does anyone know about how many questions you can skip before it hurts your score? I keep hearing all different things for how this test is scored.

Hello, I'm asking this question for my girlfriend She is a double major in math and psych and wants to know the difference between applied math doctorate programs and quantitative psychology programs. What kinds of things can one do with a applied math degree and quantitative psych and vice versa? We have had trouble finding good information online for what these programs are like other than the specific program websites. Thank you for any help or direction on where to look for information!

mind reading and cognitive neuroscience
neuropsych76 replied to neuropsych76's topic in Psychology Forum
Thank you for the reply, that does help! Decoding neural activity and computational yields many more hits So, for decoding neural activity your saying lots of math is important? Uh oh.. my math skills are pretty average, will a lack of math prevent me from going into this field? -
anyone know where i can find out more about this field? i know some of the leading names (kay, norman, heeger) but i feel like searching and asking around for "mind reading" makes me sound rather foolish and i won't have much success with that term. is there another term that would yield more hits? I realize that this topic is very new and extremely limited but i feel like i would enjoy working in a program that does this kind of research. I just can't seem to find much at all so i figured i'd see if anyone had any info on here. thank you!

Insider's guide for cognitive neuroscience graduate programs
neuropsych76 replied to neuropsych76's topic in Psychology Forum
This is immensely helpful. Thank you very much! I had some of these schools on my list when I had the insider's guide but I probably wouldn't have found the rest until I had the insiders guide in my possession again. -
My understanding is that you can contact professors at your school (if its big enough) or others you are interested to see if they have any positions. Or you can try simply searching for a research job at a hospital or research institutions. I know the local hospital where I live has several research positions listed on their website for people with a BA among other jobs.

I'm looking for a list of all of the graduate programs that offer degrees in cognitive neuroscience along with average gpa, gre, total applicants, acceptances, and tuition cost/stipend. I know this is in the insider's guide for graduate psychology programs but I don't have access to this and I'm too poor to buy my own copy Is there a comprehensive list of this sort of data on the internet or do I just have to keep search individual websites? I've been searching google and have not had much luck

That's just my experience. I know one lab where they wanted the lab manager to have a MS. But it was a major neuroimaging lab in the region. I'm not sure if that's an exception or the rule. It probably varies

Social Cognitive Neuroscience
neuropsych76 replied to AffectDecisionsandMorality's topic in Psychology Forum
Thank you again for the info! I guess I was just concerned because the CN program requires taking neurobiology and I don't have much of a biology background (one biology course). -
I'm just an applicant too (as you know by my other post) but I think either an MS or lab position could be a good fit before the PhD. If you don't get into any MS or PhD programs this time you can work in a research lab with a BA. Though in my experiences I think it may be harder to become a manager of a lab with just a BA. However, you may be able to work in a good lab as a paid research assistant in your field of interest. Like the other poster said, you would get great research experience. I'm just not sure if you can become manager with a BA but that might not make much of a difference if you get great experience as an RA.

Social Cognitive Neuroscience
neuropsych76 replied to AffectDecisionsandMorality's topic in Psychology Forum
Thank you for the info! I have heard of Duke but I haven't looked into it that much. I'll surf the links you provided. Do you think the Psy/Neuro program would be better fitted for psychology majors? -
Hi, I'm just another future applicant so take my advice with a grain of salt. I think you should retake the GRE because many places have a cutoff of 1200 or more. Your RAship may make up for this but sometimes a low GRE will take you out of the first screening of applications. (This is my biggest worry!) Good luck!

So I turned down a neuroscience REU because I thought I could work in two neuroimaging labs this summer. Well one of the labs changed their mind (ugh!) so I'll just be working in one. I turned down the REU because the research wasn't really what I wanted to do. The lab I would work is much more compatible and I feel like at the lab I would be treated better than just a person needed to fill the REU position. I lost money turning down the REU because the lab isn't funded... I hope I made a good decision. Anyone else been in a similar situation?

Social Cognitive Neuroscience
neuropsych76 replied to AffectDecisionsandMorality's topic in Psychology Forum
i'm interested in social cognitive neuroscience also i'm going to work in a social neuroimaging lab this lab to make sure i like it though. i saw some posts about people worried about money. i have financial concerns also, are social cognitive neuro programs funded? i thought most of them were.. -
Thank you for your reply. That's awesome you were able to receive such great imaging experience. So, you think neuroimaging experience would counteract not having taken courses in bio, chem, and physics? It seems like the experience should have the most weight.
-
Thank you for the reply. I was just meaning how feasible is it to get into a neuroscience phd program with little neuroscience or biology coursework. Did you take classes like o-chem and bio and physics as a psych major? I'm just really into cognitive neuroscience but only the neuroimaging and systems portion of it. I'm not into much of the molecular level so I didn't know if I could get into an actual neuroscience phd program or I would need to get into a cognitive psych phd program and work in a neuro imaging lab.

anyone??

Thank you very much for the reply, that was helpful I will definitely keep all that in mind as I start my search. I'm a junior and I hope to start making my own big spreadsheet soon so hopefully that's enough time That is a good point about if you don't know names in your research area, you might not be ready to apply yet. I will continue reading and luckily my honors thesis is somewhat related into the kind of research I want to go into so I am familiarizing myself with the literature. One final question for now, when is a good time to email POI's if they are taking students? Maybe like August or so? Thanks!

Hello fellow behavioral and cognitive neuroscience friends! I'm interested in behavioral and cognitive neuroscience but unfortunately I don't have much neuro background being a psychology major (only one bio class, one neuro class, basic calculus,). However, one of my professors suggested that I apply to cognitive psychology programs with neuroimaging labs (what i'd like to work in) and some neuro classes in the curriculum. Did any of you get into cognitive neuroscience this way or are all in strait neuroscience programs? If anyone has been a similar situation as mine, would you be so kind to offer some advice on things I be aware of before I apply? I'm familiar with the whole process of the clinical psych phd application process (i'm also interested in clinical neuropsych) but I'm not sure how much it differs for cognitive psychology programs and those cognitive psych programs that focus on neuroscience. Any input is greatly appreciated!

Hello all, glad i found this forum I was wondering if any of you have tips for finding a POI you want to work with. Other than networking, is there a better way than to pick out specific schools and look at what research the professors do? Thank you for any input.
