Well I know a couple schools said it was okay if the scores were a few days late. But if they don't receive them for a month after the application deadline it seems like they would be quick to throw my application away rather than bother with looking up my scores.. Has anyone been in a similar situation? I feel like I shouldn't bother applying to half of the schools on my list now ps did you mean for paper based tests? I took the computer based test and everywhere online says 15 days for computer and 5 days if i send them online. For paper based it says 4-6 weeks...

Wait, so if I take the GRE on the 16th of November, I'm pretty much screwed for any school that has an application deadline in December??!?!

So I took a powerprep test a couple days before my real GRE and received a 610 in the quantitative section. I was happy with this since I'm awful at math and haven't had a lot of time to study. Unfortunately, when I took the test I received a 520 on the quant. It seemed like a lot of the questions were different/harder than the powerprep test. So I'm planning on retaking the test in a couple weeks to up my Q score. I just took another powerprep (the second test) and got a 630 in the quant. This made me very happy but kind of sad. Why did I do so bad on the real GRE? I was kind of nervous but a 100 point decrease seems a bit extreme. Especially because I've read how the quant part of the powerprep test is very accurate. Any thoughts on this? Is there something I'm missing or was I just was unlucky and got questions I didn't know on the real GRE. It did really seem like the powerprep was much easier and some of the real GRE questions were esoteric but that is purely conjecture.

4 to 6 weeks?!? The ETS website said 15 days

I feel kind of cool that when people mention names in neuroscience academia I know who a lot of them are Davidson and Lieberman are really nice people though. I worked in an affective neuroscience lab (or social cognitive neuroscience) and it was pretty cool. I think I like invesitgating the cognitions more than the emotional processing though.

I've been searching a great deal for what I thought was a pretty simple question but I can't find a straightforward answer. If I took the GRE on October 13th do I have to wait until November 13th? Or can I take it like November 1st? Does it have to be 30 days in between tests? thank you!!

I think I can raise my Q to over 600. Verbal I'm fine with. I'm just worried schools will see my GRE and won't pay much attention to the rest of my app. I'm applying to two schools that have December 1st deadlines. MIT and MSU. MIT said that its okay if my scores are a few days late... I'm just concerned because a lot of applicants have scores 1300+ and the quantitative seems to be more important than the verbal for science programs.

Thank you very much for your reply. I know that is competition is absolutely ridiculous and even though I'm on par with the rest of my app, my GRE's really stand out in a bad way. I'm applying to 8 schools and I'd be happy going to any of them. I guess it comes down to trying to make myself the strongest applicant I can be. If I can raise my score even 100 points it will only help me out. So far it seems like I have no reason not to retake. The reasons holding me back are that 1) I don't have a lot of time to study for it during the semester 2) my advisor said that I should be okay with my score and I trust his opinion a great deal 3) I'd be retaking mid november and I wasn't sure if i'd meet the December 1st deadlines. 4) i don't have a lot of money and I'm dipping into my savings to retake Do those reasons outweigh retaking it? Probably not. I just hope I can do significantly better to make it worth it..

I know I've littered this forum with my altercations regarding the GRE but I still do not know whether or not I should retake them. At most I'll i'd improve from a 520Q to a low 600Q. Is this worth it? I got a 580 on the V and probably would do about the same maybe worse depending if I got words I didn't know. Applying to cog neuro programs... rest of stats.. 3.67 GPA, 3.96 psychology GPA honors program and completing honors thesis cognitive neuroscience project lots of extracurriculars, 6 honors societies, president of psych club and psi chi. i don't even know if any of this matters but it certainly fills up my CV. a lot of research experience at my school. assisted with about 10 different projects there not including honors thesis. worked in a hospital for a summer doing neuropsych testing on patients. involved in several research projects there and got my name mentioned in a book and co author at 2 presentations. worked in a cognitive neuroscience lab at an ivy league school. got great fmri experience there (i want to do fmri research) but too early for any presentations overall, i have about 6 poster presentations, 1 publication in an undergrad journals, lots of lab skills and also i should get great LOR's. so do you think i have to retake the GRE? will getting a 1200 or so greatly increase my chances? i'm applying to some good programs but only a couple top programs. will my 1100 totally ruin my chances? thank you!

I doubt there are any without a GRE requirement but can anyone provide some anecdotal evidence for schools that say something like we have no GRE cut off, just try your best. In other words, for schools that do not explicitly say the GRE is important in admissions, will a bad score (1100) still be significant?

I would argue that the non-professor would be a better fit because it enhances the uniqueness of your application. everyone has 3 psych profs that had them for class and did research but yours would stand out a bit. besides she has a PhD so its not like the non academic would make her way less reputable. that's just my opinion, i'm not on any admissions committee

GRE scores good enough for Cog Neuro PhD?
neuropsych76 replied to kdunovan's topic in Psychology Forum
Well at least I guessed my score perfectly even though it's not that good. Ah I'd feel so much better about my app if I broke 1200. Congrats to the OP! -

Thank you for the reply. I hope the rest of my application will make up for it. I have a good amount of research experience and should get good LOR's. I have a 3.67 GPA and a host of extracurricular activities also so the GRE is definitely the weakest part of my application. I do have a more refined research interest but I'm slightly brain dead so I didn't feel like going in much detail. I talked to the POI's and they all said my research interests would be a good fit in their lab for whats that worth. I know at MIT and WashU many applications will have GRE scores in the 1500's. This makes me feel like I shouldn't bother applying. Is it possible to get in good cogneuro PhD programs with an 1100? -

I just took it today, after lots of stress and drilling vocab/math I got a 580 on the verbal and 520 on the math. 1100 total. ? Do you think this will be good enough for cogneuro programs? I'm applying to MSU, South Carolina, Iowa, MIT, Johns Hopkins, and WashU as of now. I'm interested in imaging of higher order cognition.. -
I've been reading these forums on the GRE and they have been very helpful. However, I've seen some people say they had an identified experimental section and some say they didn't. Now that the test is confirmed to change in August, will every experimental section be identified? Will it blatantly state THIS IS AN EXPERIMENTAL SECTION or do you just have to guess based on the type/number of questions? Thank you!

this is good to hear that the powerprep gives the most accurate scores.. i've done my best by far on the power prep test i took! i've taken many different practice tests from the different prep books and from online sources. i've had my score jump 400 points in either direction in a matter of days from the different practice tests lol i take the real GRE in two days, i hope the powerprep is most accurate!

GRE scores good enough for Cog Neuro PhD?
neuropsych76 replied to kdunovan's topic in Psychology Forum
I'm just worried that my GRE will be a huge factor for not getting in. I take it in a week but based off practice tests I should get around an 1100 :/ -

Yay Well a few schools are UPenn, MIT, and CMU. But I'm taking the GRE in a week so depending on how score might change where I apply to. I'm not feeling too confident about that test :/ -
GRE scores good enough for Cog Neuro PhD?
neuropsych76 replied to kdunovan's topic in Psychology Forum
Agreed. You should be fine there. 1280 is a decent score with research experience. What would be a GRE score that would prevent getting into cogneuro programs? -

Anyone else out there applying to cog neuro programs?? I think I've finally gotten a good list of schools to apply to. -
Thought I'd make this for those applying to neuroscience programs this application cycle. I'm only applying to cognitive neuroscience programs but I didn't want to exclude other neuro people

How much is a bonus for working during undergrad ?
neuropsych76 replied to M.M.'s topic in Psychology Forum
If its not psych related work, not much if at all. If working interferes with school work I would try to cut back if you can. I know how it is to have to work during school so I know its tough. -
Unrelated Research Experience on a CV?
neuropsych76 replied to i/o hopeful's topic in Psychology Forum
Any research experience is valuable for PhD programs. I'm not sure if it matters how long a CV is. (I hope it doesn't, mine is 5 pages) I would definitely include the research experience on your CV and maybe mention it in your PS if you can make it fit well.
