  1. Welcome to the forums!! I think (and I may be wrong) but most prospective graduate only contact professors to see if they are accepting students for the upcoming year. If the schools you are applying to do lab rotations (which i think is common in chemistry) than its not really a big deal. I'm in psychology (cognitive neuroscience) so I had to make sure the professors I wanted to work with were accepting students so I emailed them and talked to a few of them on the phone before I applied. After you send in your application however, there is no real need to contact them. Good luck!
  2. I've done two internships as an undergrad and they have both been invaluable for me. The first one was working at a hospital and was unpaid but I received great experience and even though it sucked working two jobs that summer, it helped me refine my interests as well. My second internship paid for my living expenses but that was it. I worked in a lab far away from my home and it was a great experience as well. I'm not sure if these experiences will directly help me get into graduate school but so far every professor I've talked to has brought them up so they must be somewhat noteworthy and they were great learning opportunities for me. Long story short: Unpaid internships can be hard in the short run, but if you find a really good one it can help you long term.
  3. From what I've heard, it doesn't matter so much what exactly the research you did, as it matters that you received quality research. So, I wouldn't worry about if the research you did isn't directly applied to the program you wish to be admitted to. Besides, cognitive and social psych isn't that much different from I/O and you should have easily been able to explain how doing your cognitive and social psych research lead you to your interests in I/O. best of luck!
  4. True, but it's just so lame. I'm not like depressed or anything lol. I actually enjoy reading troll posts because I find them amusing.
  5. That's great you got interviews! That means your GRE didn't affect you for those schools since you got past the first cut! Ah okay, you are not all over the place at all, I just saw your list of programs and I assumed you were. Good luck
  6. Your stats are kind of similar to mine and I can tell you that a bad GRE can be killer to one's application even if the rest is excellent. Also, I'm not sure what you discussed in your presonal statement, but you seem to be all over the place in what you want to do academically. I don't think that would look favorably to ad coms.
  7. I haven't had much grading experience, but I've done a decent amount of peer review and I've graded essays for applications for honors societies. I know I will have to work on this skill and I hope I develop it in graduate school. Sometimes I will be highly critical and other times I feel I'm being too nice.
  8. Could it be that two friends in different parts of the world have combined forces to flame a graduate school forum? If so, I've lost hope for humanity.
  9. I hope I have time to do some physical activity in grad school. I would like to keep playing ultimate frisbee
  10. I'm a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan It will be a great game because both teams are very strong all the way around. However, a lot of people tend to forget how awful the Packers running game was during the regular season. The Steelers have an awesome run defense. Therefore, I think the Steelers will be able to control the game and should win unless they have more turnovers than the Packers.
  11. I have not heard anything from them. I turned in my application a few days before the December 5th deadline. I'm guessing not hearing anything by now is bad news :/
  12. Add me to this list as well. Last semester I was incredibly stressed/busy with finishing my honors thesis and collecting data for it, taking 4 upper level courses, studying and taking the GRE twice, and of course applying to 12 grad programs. Now this semester, I have two easy sociology classes, a PE class, and nothing to do with grad school stuff except wait. I have so much free time that I don't feel like doing anything at all. All I do is check my email and wonder about what the future holds in regards for grad school.
  13. Waiting it out is certainly difficult and I, like probably everyone else, would like to know already where we are headed off to next fall (if anywhere). I've seen on the results page that some people emailed the school about their status (and almost always received a rejection email in return). Is this ever a good idea? I can see the pros of knowing earlier about your status but it seems like it would be a superfluous email to send. I know a few schools I applied to already sent out interview invites so I'm probably getting some more rejections soon, but I was just wondering if asking about one's application status is common/practical. Thanks all!
  14. I'm glad to hear your situation worked out nicely! It seems i'm being a bit over neurotic about this They could keep me up while sleeping if they snore loudly
  15. 6 people for that same POI certainly seems intimidating but I agree it would be cool to meet all those people who have similar interests (assuming they are all nice!) I hope your interview went well. I know how competitive clinical psych is so you must be a strong applicant to have received an interview! I'm going to prepare for both POI's I just wasn't sure about the whole process of interviews and multiple POIs. It seems rather complicated.
  16. That's true. I just have these visions of the person keeping me up all night to screw me over the next day lol. The program says it has a mentor ship model so I'm assuming that means there are no lab rotations. Also, I am not sure if the POI is taking more than one person so that is a good point.
  17. So everything is booked for my interview in a couple weeks and I found out that I will be rooming with another applicant for my stay. This is fine and, being the creeper I am, I googled the person's name to see what I could find. I found they worked in a lab that did research similar to one of the POI's research I applied to work with. I know that doesn't necessarily mean they are interested in that work and that professor but it certainly caught my attention. Would schools room two applicants who are competing for the same professor's lab? That seems kind of cruel... I also put down another POI to work with who has slightly different research interests. I have only been in contact with this POI and he was the one who invited me to the interview. Is it likely I will still interview with both POI's even though I've only been talking to one so far? Or even though I put down two POI's I might just interview with the one who I've been talking to? He said he didn't know about the other POI and I don't think I should email the other POI and ask. Thanks for any thoughts on the matter
  18. On the results page, it says they have sent out all the invites already. Hopefully you got one
  19. Thank you for the replies! I feel like I'm sort of in limbo for some schools because I haven't heard anything but I know (from on here and other sources) that I wasn't invited to the first or only interview weekend. Maybe I'm on an unofficial wait list or the schools are slow with rejections?
  20. I just saw on the results page that several years ago a person was notified they were accepted on April 3rd for one of the schools I applied to. To me, this seems super late for PhD programs since you generally have to make a decision by the 15th. Is it common to get notified so late? It just sort of caught me by surprise
  21. As many of things have already been addressed with your post already, I'd like to point out this statement in particular. A bachelors in math is one of the, if not the most valuable bachelors degrees a person can obtain. Math is super useful and lots of companies want to hire math majors and pay them well. I don't know if you have received bad information or if your stress is making you become somewhat short sighted.
  22. I would mention as little as possible. Clinical psych is so competitive, any potential problem could easily throw you out of the running. The adcom might worry about any relapses even if you are 100% depression free now. Also, they might worry about potential transference and countertranference issues down the road (i.e. you think you know what the patient is going through). That's a tough situation though, good luck!!
  23. So, I've been in contact with a grad student who is picking me up from the airport and he said to let him know if I have any questions about the program or the school's location. Should I just wait til I meet him to ask questions? I don't really have any pressing questions now but I could certainly come up with some. This is probably a minor issue but I, like most grad applicants around this time, am stressing every detail about everything
  24. I never call professors by their first names. Even the ones whom I know very well. However, the professors I've talked to at the school for my interview always introduce themselves without the Dr. title and sign their emails with their first name. I'd feel uneasy calling them by their first name but am I supposed to under any circumstance? thanks!
  25. Did you apply to Iowa's Biosciences program? I applied to their biosciences (with a focus in cogneuro) and haven't heard anything. One part of their website says applications were due on Dec 15 and another place says Jan 15...
