Haha, very true. I think I learned more at that dinner than the actual interview day. But this upcoming interview is 3 days long! I feel like I could miss one day and not lose much grad school student interaction because there is a whole day of empty space (i'm guessing i'll meet with more grad students then). Still no news on school X... sigh. this long of a wait can't be a good sign!

How many hours per week do (will) you RA/TA?
neuropsych76 replied to neuropsych76's topic in The Bank
Thank you all for the replies! So basically, 20 hours seems pretty normal but as long as there are some slow weeks where I work less than 20. I guess I'll find out what TAing entails at my school when I visit! -

Maybe there isn't one -
So I have an acceptance from school A and was offered a visit. The problem is that this school's visit day is the day before school B's interview weekend is. School A is kind of far away so it might be possible to make both events if I don't sleep for a night I'm much more interested in school A and I'm mostly just going to school B to check it out. The thing is that school B has a 3 day interview weekend. Is it okay if I miss the first 1.5 days and only attend the actual interview (i'd be missing a dinner and "fun night with grad students")? I've already had a topic on here asking if I should even go to school B's interview but now since school A is directly affecting my trip, I've gone back to doubt land. any advice is appreciated

thank you for your replies. i haven't found their ranking anywhere so i was a bit concerned as to why they didn't even have a ranking (i know rankings don't mean much but generally schools who do not have a ranking are suspect) They also contacted me via GRE search service so i don't know if that means they have trouble getting students. additionally, i'm interested in their cognitive program and i saw it only had 4 profs so i wasn't sure what the future holds for that area as well.

Help me pick? Duke, Hopkins, UPenn
neuropsych76 replied to lethalcatmonk's topic in 2010-2015 Archive
I agree with space-cat. Rankings do not really mean all that much; especially if the schools are all so close. Go to the place that has the best professors because from what I hear, that is the biggest indicator for future success. -

I also like Monday's. Everything (grad school business) freezes on the weekends so every Monday I hope I hear something nice back from a school. I was hoping I'd hear back from a school I interviewed at today but no such luck :/

I have my privacy settings all the way up and I still didn't mention the school I got accepted to

What not to say/do during an interview
neuropsych76 replied to Genomic Repairman's topic in Life Sciences
I found this thread pretty humorous. But it got me wondering, is it ever the other way around? Do grad students ever take prospective students out drinking/strip clubs/drug adventures ect? I'm going to an interview in a couple weeks (at one of the nation's biggest party schools) so I'm a bit worried about this. I'd rather not get busted for drugs because of a grad student social. -
I posted i got into graduate school on my facebook I don't think its a big deal unless you're obnoxious about it (like anything else really). Getting into graduate school is a huge life event (for me at least) so I had no problem telling my social networking friends that I "made it."

I'm interested in one as well! I'm definitely going to have to look into it more though. No more undergrad payments (yay!) means I'll have some money so maybe I can afford one before grad school

I came to college as an exploratory major but quickly changed to psychology and was focused on being a psychologist quickly after that. (however, i did change career path aspirations from clinical psychologist to cognitive neuroscientist/ experimental psychologist ) I was lucky that I found what "clicked" for me early on.

I would think so. Rankings do not mean much (unless a school is awfully ranked on multiple levels) since the mentor you work with is so so important. I would rather go to a slightly less prestigious school than a school I might hate being at for 5 years. It sounds like you really didn't like Pitt that much and you received an offer somewhere else so I would be happy with how it worked out

One on One Interviews with faculty
neuropsych76 replied to Curlygrrl's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I agree with green8715. Relax, first off, you're in! This is your opportunity to really see if you want to work with these faculty members and go to the school so try and learn as much as you can. I don't think you have to prepare that much. But it would be a good idea to do some background research to ask more specific questions about the program, school, research ect. -
I know the actual work done as a TA or RA can be a little fuzzy (something I hope to find out during my visit) but school A has accepted me with a stipend and full tuition remission for working 20 hours as a TA or RA. Is this a fair amount? I've seen anywhere from 10-20 but I'm just wondering if 20 hour/week TA/RA's means I'll generally be going a lot more TA/RA work than "normal" or if it is just right. thanks!!

I didn't get into either of my dream schools
neuropsych76 replied to LongGraduatedStudent's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I don't think it would be very practical because you don't know if you would get into you're top choices next time. If you have funding, I'd say go there. There was a reason you applied there right? -

That sounds like an interesting study I'll be sure to check it out when I go!
