Will people wait until April 15 for phd programs?
neuropsych76 replied to digits2006's topic in 2010-2015 Archive
I'd hate to wait until that long to make a decision but it could be possible. I did turn one school I knew I wasn't interested in anymore, but there are some schools (though probably rejections) I haven't heard from. I'd like to have all my rejections official before I decide -
I know someone who had an offer from JHU's neuro program a few years ago but turned it down because of the cut throatness of the people there. If you have another good offer, why deal with people you wouldn't like working with? Congrats on the interviews though!!

I love neuroimaging research and would enjoy teaching at the undergraduate level. Also, I didn't want to have to work another job I hated after I graduated. Worked too many of those already...

I was lucky enough to be accepted this year and have some positive responses from schools. But I'm probably going to end up with 8 or 9 rejections also. It seemed like every rejection I received was from a school that I didn't have a great fit or perfect research match. A sub 1200 GRE didn't help I'm sure, but really, it's all about the research match and fit!

I got mine a cognitive neuroscience book only 7 bucks each, i dont think you need anything extravagant

I can't speak for group interviews but the one on one interviews I had seemed to be very relaxed and we basically just talked about research interests and the program. Basically, know a lot about the program so you can ask good questions and be prepared to talk about their research as well as your own. good luck!

lol. This made me think of that Simpson's episode where Lisa discovers how bullies can smell nerdiness and creates a spray to stop it.

I think it is normal to feel frustrated after a situation like that. The whole grad school admit process is a business and can be pretty cut throat sometimes but to be interviewed and then have a follow up email from the POI expressing interest does seem to be leading on a bit. However, you still might get in so don't be too hard on yourself yet!! A similar thing happened to me, I went to the interview, it went very well and the POI said he wanted to talk on the phone more afterward. He had to cancel the phone call and said he'd get back to me. After waiting a couple weeks, I emailed him and he told me he wasn't taking any grad students this year. It happens.

What were you doing when you received your acceptance?
neuropsych76 replied to YA_RLY's topic in Waiting it Out
I was checking my email and wondering why school X was taking so long to contact me post-interview. The more I thought about it, the more I thought it was unlikely they would accept me since they were taking so long to get back to me and I was sadly thinking I might not get in anywhere. Then all of a sudden, I get an acceptance email from school Y totally out of the blue with no interview required. It was awesome -
Factors more important than prestige?
neuropsych76 replied to Golden Monkey's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I ended up getting rejected (post interview) from a slightly more prestigious school than the school I was accepted into. However, I think I have a much better fit with the slightly less prestigious school so I wasn't too heartbroken about the rejection. I think as long as it's close things like fit, cost of living, and weather can be big factors. However, if there is a huge different between two programs than you have to go with prestige. -
I agree with Strangefox, you didn't lead her one and you shouldn't feel guilty about anything. It could very well be the other way around. I talked to a professor and she expressed a lot of interest in me coming to school X but I received a prompt rejection a few months later. It's the nature of this business

I didn't have a plan B before I got admitted but i think everyone technically has a plan B. It just not be very desirable (working a crappy job, living with parents ect.) It's tough to think about making a plan b when you're so focused on grad school but for me, i started to think how i could work in a lab if i didn't get it. at least then, i was still focusing on grad school (plan a) while i was doing a potential plan b!

Significant others and the application process
neuropsych76 replied to The Lorax's topic in Waiting it Out
I'm in this group as well sadly. My gf of 4 years will probably be completing her PhD 10 hours away from where I will completing mine. I really don't know what's going to happen but the depressing thing is no matter if we stay together or break up it will be really tough : / -
I try to be optimistic about the process and it is exciting. But like newms said, it is so much easier to be happy about it AFTER you have just one admit. I didn't have a backup plan after I graduate (i would hate getting a job i have no interest in) so not getting into grad school would be stressful for me. Glad to see some optimism posted in a time of high stress

how long does it generally take to be reimbursed travel expenses?
neuropsych76 replied to neuropsych76's topic in The Lobby
i was wondering about school X, thanks for letting me know about them! my gf has also been waiting about a month for another school. i guess some schools do take a long time... -
I'm wondering about this as well. Is it possible that they could rescind your offer or take away funding if you're a total jerk or totally incompetent?
-
Well, I think as a PhD you make some money for the school by generating research projects and teaching courses. In Psy.D's or other professional programs the school gives the training and doesn't get anything. Plus, there is many more openings for Psy.D's so there is just less funding to go around.
-
As far as clinical work is concerned, a Psy.D is pretty much as good as a PhD already. However, PhD's generally come with much more funding during psyds. If you only want to do therapy, it might make more financial sense to do a masters

Accepted into nonfunded clinical program. Should I turn it down?
neuropsych76 replied to Wotan's topic in Psychology Forum
oops, i meant clinical psychologists DO NOT make nearly enough as much as MD's -
Should I tell my recommenders about the results?
neuropsych76 replied to poohpooh's topic in Applications
i'm really close with two of my letter writers so they always ask me everyday about my results ha. but the third one is really far away so i prob wont tell her until i know where i'm going for certain. -

HI, I seriously considered clinical psych for awhile and I know how competitive it is. It is EXTREMELY competitive. Your stats are great (assuming your GRE is 1200+) but there are lots that look just like you applying to those programs. My advice: DO NOT attend an unfunded clinical phd program. you will be in an awful position down the line. clinical psychologists nearly as much as MD's so 250k in debt is a big deal when you'll start off making hopefully 25-30k at a post doc and then 50k your first job. If you really only want to do clinical work, I'd suggest a masters because it just makes more sense financially. clinical psych is in a tough spot right now and the worst thing you can do is go into it with tons of debt -
I'm going to bump this up because I applied to SC and it's one of my top choices. But I do not have a car and after reading this thread I'm a little worried about transportation. Anyone know how well a person can get around in Columbia without a car? Is there a lot of housing within walking distance to campus and stores? thanks!

I was posting so much in February, I was sure I'd crack the top 10! Better luck next time I guess

I think I'll just skip the first day since I'll still have plenty of time at school B and it makes the trip much easier. I could change school A's visit if I had to but since both visits fall on spring break it makes it so much easier to do it all in one swoop One follow up question... is it okay to let school B know I'm missing part of their interview for another school? Is this frowned upon?
