  2. I received a similar email from a grad school I applied to today as well (weird), though it's not my first choice. Although, it is asking me to register for orientation during the summer but was also from admit@school.edu. Is this a general orientation email for everyone who applied or have I not heard about a possible acceptance??
  3. I'm wondering the same thing for one of my programs (Mississippi State Cognitive Science). From what I've gathered, the most important thing is the faculty member and what sorts of skills you obtain. If Minnesota's cog science program is comprised of all the other good programs, you should be fine.
  4. I know this is a sort of random question, but as most of us here do tons of research I thought it would be a good audience to ask So, for my honors thesis I had title A. Title A was okay, and I used it when I submitted to a few conferences for poster and paper presentations. I've been getting help with another faculty member who suggested I change the name of my thesis to title B which sounds a lot better. If I get around to publishing, I would certainly use title B. Additionally, this all happened when I had to submit a final title to put on my honors medallion (which i get at graduation and is what my thesis will always be known as) and I used title B. This all happened during the craziness of the end of the semester and grad school apps so I never thought about the ramifications. Is this going to be a problem? Essentially, I'm presenting my thesis at conferences as one name, but it will be on my CV (and if I publish) as another. I really hope this isn't a huge problem but I feel like it could be... Thanks for any insight!

  9. I wouldn't worry about it (unless maybe if your applying to English programs). I know I had two grammar mistakes in one of my PS's and still got an interview for that school. One of the mistakes was I meant to say conceptually instead of concept and the sentence sounded really funny.

  11. Very true! Thank you and newms for the response. I just wanted to make sure my feelings were not totally aberrant given the circumstances. I may go to the school and absolutely love it there, but the initial information makes it seem like I can obtain much better training at other schools.

  13. That's strange... was the program assistant listed as a contact for the email?
  14. Unfortunately, a 1060 probably did get you screened out of a lot of programs. (I got an 1170 and I know it screened me out of some too) But all is not lost, if that is the only non-excellent part of your application you can simply retake it and reapply next year. Good luck!
  15. So I just had an awesome interview with school A, and even though I don't know if I'm going to be accepted there, I am really excited about their program. School A was towards the top of my list before the interview and now I feel even better about them. I just received another interview invite at school B that was towards the end of my list. I also just found out that my POI for that school cannot take students now. Furthermore, I was told that the cognitive part of the program (it is a pure neuroscience program in a bio department) has been decreasing in numbers recently. I'm honored they extended me an invite but my first reaction wasn't all that pleasant. I probably sound like an arrogant jerk complaining about getting interviews but I don't mean to be at all so I apologize if this post comes across like that. I was just wondering if these are normal feelings as getting invited anywhere is an honor. (I probably will attend the interview weekend anyway because I have zero admits so far. But I just wanted to express my thoughts a bit and see if anyone else has/had similar feelings)
  16. Your GRE is fantastic so don't worry about that. You didn't mention having any research experience so I would think that would be a top priority for being competitive for PhD programs.

  20. So, I had an interview this weekend at one of my top choices and fortunately, I think it went well. However, at the very end of the day my POI told me he wished he could talk with me more and told me he wants to talk on the phone later. Is this common to still talk to POI's after the interview? Does this mean he's still interested in me or that I didn't discuss enough when I met with him? I'm pretty sure they are making decisions on admission pretty soon so I just didn't know what I should expect for this upcoming phone call. Thanks for any insight!
  21. Yes, this sounds like a formal interview to me. Especially since they are paying for your travel. My interview information view was fairly ambiguous as well but I had several lab tours as well as several one on one meetings with professors. Good luck!!
  22. If there are programs that do not require letters of recommendation, those are programs you probably do not want to attend.
  23. According to the results page, the Rochester Brain and Cognitive Sciences interview date is coming up... any word on invitations yet??
  24. I agree with cogneuroforfun, sorry! I just was at my first ever interview this weekend and I can tell you all of the applicants were super competitive and really were immersed in their various research interests. You would need a lot more research experience to be competitive. Even if it was like social psych research and you wanted to do social neuroscience that might be okay, but just 6 months of a dissertation in a different field is not going to impress PhD admission committees. You would need to work in a lab for a while obtaining good research skills. Best of luck!
