Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) Fall 2016 Applicants
asurachm replied to asurachm's topic in Waiting it Out
Hi @kdfnueNF, Yes, I applied for the PhD program. The POI that I mention on my SOP and the supplemental material contacted me for an interview earlier this week. I think she mentioned during the interview that new students admitted to the program will be directly assigned to a faculty member that they mention in their applications (i.e. in line research interest). So I think it depends on the faculty members whether or not doing interview with their prospective students. If they also do interview, I think the timing will be vary. I hope you'll hear something from them soon Did you also apply to other HDFS programs? -

Interview/Interview Invitation Thread
asurachm replied to VentureIntoNothingness's topic in Psychology Forum
I am sure you already did some research about the basic idea of things that need to be prepared for interview in general. I would like to give some advice that specifically relevant for video call interview: - Dress properly as if you are going to have in person interview - Pay attention to the background of the room where you are having interview, make sure nothing distracted and it is quiet enough to do a proper interview. Also make sure nothing is going to interrupt during the interview. - Check the internet connection to make sure that the video call will run smoothly, try several mock video call interviews with your friends/families - During the interview, look into the camera on your computer (not the screen), thus the interviewer will feel like you look directly to him/her. It turns out very hard to do, so practice it,haha - Don't be nervous, just be yourself, and everything's gonna be alright Good luck -
Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) Fall 2016 Applicants

@east-coast-girl I know... right? Although, I checked postings of result from the last two years of penn state's HDFS and I found the same pattern. One early acceptance around the middle of December and more acceptance in the middle of January - February. If they still have the same admission mechanism, I think more decisions will be handed out in January until February. Where else are you applying for HDFS if you don't mind sharing? -

You will be able to order the additional score reports after your score is available online in your personal GRE account. The ETS will notify you about this through email, but usually the score is available earlier (approx. 10 days after the test day). Thus, better check regularly around 10 days after the test day. Good luck

Congrats for everyone's achievements This has been a good year for me too: presented at three national conferences, one regional conference, published an article as first author, and graduating from my master (just defended my thesis last week). I am so grateful for having such a supportive mentor and adviser. -
Another option, check out ECE (ece.org), cheaper than WES (by $50). The school that I am applying to also using SOPHAS for the admission system and it directed me to WES for third party evaluation of academic transcript. I talked to the program and they allow me to look for alternative third party for the evaluation. Talk to your program whether they requiring you to have evaluation from specific third party.

What about the difficulty level of each question? Does that affect the scoring procedure? -

3. I think the most important thing regarding recommendation letter is what your referee say about you in the letters. If you have fours and all of them mention you as a good potential for the program that would be a good thing. 11. If the program requiring it as one of the admission requirements, then yes definitely. But I don't think the committee will dive in to the CV extensively (especially if there are numerous number of applicants). Thus, it is important to design your CV so it will make the committee easier to get an impression that the applicant is a good potential for the program. 12. I think that a good idea to put your research agenda, but also it would be good to add that you open to changes through your educational process at the program.
