  6. @AMStudent i think the fit om my research interests is really help When I submitted my applications, Penn State was my first choice (it is in the top rank of HDFS program). Now, I am open to any possibility I think. Hopefully visitation to the programs will give me better pictures and better considerations on deciding my final choice. What about you, what's your top choice?
  7. Just received an email from UW-Madison notifying that I am admitted to their HDFS program. Visit day will be February 26th. I was rejected to the program two years ago for MS/PhD admission. So yes, I am ecstatic!
  8. @AMStudent Wonderful!!! (is is with Penn State again?) Congrats and good luck!
  9. This one is epic!!!haha Ohio State (OSU) English, PhD (F16) Rejected via E-mail on 21 Jan 2016 ♦ A 21 Jan 2016 report spam Guess rebuilding their football program drained their funds.
  10. Hi @AMStudent, I think the admission committee from Penn State tried to clarify what my research interests are and see if those fit the interests of faculty members in the program. He mentioned that the new students will be directly be prepared to work at certain lab on certain research project. They are going to recruit 10 to 15 new cohort of students this year if I am not mistaken. They will have a reception event next month for new accepted students. Based on the result posts from previous years, they might send the decision within this week and next week. Have you heard anything from them? For the VT, I was surprised that there were three faculty members interviewing me! Similarly, they asked my research interests. For most of the time, they explain about their program and the university in general. I was so embarrassed as I lost my internet connection in the middle of the interview!hahaha They will update with the decision next week. So, finger crossed I guess.. :|
  11. I am not sure if this professor is part of the admission committee or not. But I think it does mean that you are on the priority list to be invited for an interview. At least that's a good sign. Congrats!
  12. I knew since I was 12 years old that I wanted to be a professor in a university, and I am still now, haha
  13. Received an email from an admission committee (also POI) from Penn State for a Skype interview tomorrow. I'll have two interviews tomorrow (another one with VT), hope I won't mess these up by mentioning the wrong school name or POI
  14. Hi @HDFSanni, I checked the result page and no post related with HDFS interviews or acceptance from your universities yet.
  15. Hi @meggie, I am sorry for late reply. I think the interview was fine, the POI and I share similar research interest. So, I hope that a good sign. My POI said that the program will hand out the decision in the middle of January and they will have reception event in February. Maybe we will hear next week? I hope we'll hear some good news
  16. Received an interview invitation from Human Development program at Virginia Tech today for a Skype interview. I applied to Adult Development and Aging division.
  17. I enrolled in an MSc program (in Human Development and Family Studies) and it don't require writing an actual thesis. Instead I have to do a research project and try to publish it (but I don't need to submit it as a thesis). I got one offer so far for PhD program so far (So, I think I am fine). I think the most important thing is that you have to be able to show the admission committee that you have experience on doing research and even better publish (which you mentioned that you have that factors). I think generally you'll be fine when you apply for PhD in the US. However, programs are different in terms of their regulations. You need to check to the program that you're interested in regarding their thesis regulation (check their graduate handbook). I remember read a handbook of a program and it state that you have to have an actual thesis before going further to the next step of the program. So, if I didn't write a thesis (or a research project?) although I have a master degree, I need to do a thesis (or research project?) first. But I think that a rare case. CMIW...
  18. Thanks @AMStudent ... Congrats for your interview also with Penn State, I hope you'll hear a good news from them
  19. I just got an acceptance notification from Oregon State University (HDFS) today with full funding guarantee. They will have recruitment event at the end of February. I think I can sleep tight now in the night, knowing that I have a guarantee to go to school again next fall
  20. Well... you'll never know until you get the decisions from the programs. I think it is better to think positive while also ready with alternative plans. Keep your chin up
  21. I am 100% agree with @fuzzylogician. This year's application cycle, I applied to several schools for PhD programs that rejected me two years ago. I am weirdly grateful for going through the rejection process and I really learn from that. Two years ago, I didn't really have solid purpose of why I wanna go to grad school, what I really wanna learn in grad school, and what are my future career and professional aspirations. Then I went to master program and I acknowledge it as a process to be academically mature in terms of starting to build a solid foundation of my academic career as I really wanna be an academician in the future. I feel grateful for having a great mentor during my master that gave me opportunities and directions to learn about what I really passionate about. She is always challenge me to maximize my potential. I did several research projects, presented in several conferences, and published during my master. I knew that I really wanna go to PhD program, thus I tried my best during my master to improve my quality. The most important outcome from my master education is that I finally know what are my area of interests. When the time was coming to apply for PhD program this year, I know what I really wanna learn in the further stage of my education and I am confident to tell the admission committee that I have abilities to be succeed in the program. Having the knowledge about my area of interests was really gave me clear directions to choose the persons that I really wanna work with during my PhD. I met and talked to most of the persons that I really wanna work with during some conferences. I agree that contact with POIs in nice, but still you have to show them your abilities (i.e. inline research interest, previous research experiences) to appeal them to recruit you. I don't know how it works, but GRE score is also important, feel grateful that you have time to improve your score and maximize your opportunity. Well, I haven't got any acceptance letter yet but I had one interview so far from one school that rejected me two years ago. I was surprised that the interviewer mention about my quality that my mentor mention through her reference letter. So, reference letters are important! I Agree with @fuzzylogician about building a good relationships with your prospective referees. Good luck..
