Harvard University Press just published a new book written by a University of Michigan Professor of Education about the inner-workings of graduate school admission committees. She was granted access to meetings at top schools in a number of different departments. I'm planning on reading it to help pass the time until March.

Although it is the biggest, I was also under the impression that is because it is one of the most popular programs and receives the greatest number of applications... certainly that can be seen on this forum over the years, there are always plenty of Ed Policy people.  BUT, the good news for HGSE, and this is what gives me hope also, is that there is no "cap" on the number of students they can admit.  It's not like you have to edge out 100 people for the last slot----there are, theoretically, an infinite number of slots (and why not? You're paying THEM for the education), you just have to be qualified in their eyes.  If they want you, they can take you, without having to choose between you and someone else.

I've heard of many students getting in without education experience---they love diversity of backgrounds!  And special studies sounds like the exact place to bring that!

I'm currently a student in Florida, but my goal is to live and teach in Massachusetts as it'ss where I've always wanted to go post-graduation. I initially belived I needed a master's due to my non-education degree and my lack of experience in a classroom setting. I know undergrad education majors generally  have required classroom time. I've volunteered with children and have worked with them, but lack that direct classroom experience which is why I assumed I really needed to pursue a master's. Plus, I feel like I'd be a horrible teacher due to my non-education background, another reason why I felt like I needed a master's, to play catch up with others who actually majored in education. But, I will look into certification programs because I would rather avoid another student loan if I can and if it matches my current goals.
For right now, my goal is simply to teach in the classroom, grades K-2 as those are the ones which I've enjoyed the most.

Well, practice tests can vary so I would take several and just keep studying and reviewing up until the actual test.  I called my mom crying after my first GRE practice test. I don't remember the score now, but it was really bad.  Then the next one I took a few days later I scored way higher than my actual GRE and was unrealistically excited.  So I think just getting the practice in helps, and I wouldn't worry tooooo much about the scores on the practice tests.  If you can end up just getting your Quant up a couple of points from the 148, you'll be fine with that.  EPM cares more about your verbal, and especially your AWA.  Aside from that, your experience and letters of rec count way more anyway and will definitely offset the GRE score.  Once I was there I talked to a few profs who were on the admissions team who said basically, when it comes to the GRE, they want to know you are basically competent in math and that you're a strong writer, but your past experience and connection to your future goals is what they really care about.
Also to be aware of - I don't know that HGSE does this, but an admissions professor at the Kennedy school told me they Google EVERY applicant they are seriously considering so make sure you don't have anything really derogatory publicly available on your social media or anything.  That same professor Googled everyone in our class and would randomly pull fun facts about us out.  (All positive accolades he found, but still).

I think it's not the best way to put this question... First of all, they only become important if they are exceptional - exceptionally good or exceptionally bad. Then, it really depends on what you are applying for. MA?

Is it evident from the context what you mean? For what it’s worth, I had a similar experience - was mortified to find that I had submitted 2 applications with the wrong starting year for one of my degrees. Of course the correct year was in the transcript, so the committee would know how long my degree really took.
I debated whether or not to email admissions and in the end I decided to do so, if only so they knew I noticed, and for my own peace of mind... In both cases, someone replied to say it wasn’t a big deal. And I actually just received offers of admission to both of them, so I guess it was okay!   So I guess if it’s a little thing it doesn’t matter so much (and I think it’s up to you whether you want to email them or not).

You look like an ideal candidate to me. The only thing you need is a strong SoP, but in your case it's about not spoiling the image rather than building it.

If you are interested in Gifted Education, I recommend reading Dr. James H. Borland out of Teacher's College, Columbia University. His research and recommendations have completely changed how I view and teach the gifted. Furthermore, Columbia has a master's degree for gifted education. I'm pretty sure Dr. Borland teaches some of those classes. I'm looking into it myself.
