  1. Based on their MO in the results thread for all disciplines this year, it's been emails if you're accepted, letters if you're rejected. So far, those of us who have had our status update change all subsequently received a rejection letter within the next week or so. I was hoping too, right up until the last minute. I thought a full week after the date change meant I was safe . The very next day *BAM*, "no thank you, ma'am." ~ m
  2. No Ordinary Time. It's a book about FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt. Fantastic book. So interesting, readable, and loaded with information. I just read it last month. ~ m
  3. I graduated May 2009. I never got my degree when I was young because I got pregnant (and then pregnant again). So I started in Fall 2006 and finished last May. It was quite the whirlwind. And I totally get the department darling thing.

  4. Nice. I posted but they were all pretty boring, old lady good things. Exceedingly practical with the exception of the trip to Italy.

  5. My youngest son won't have to wait to get braces. The remodel on my kitchen will get finished. I might get my trip to Italy finally (sympathy gift from the DH). Oh yeah, and I can afford to keep my pantry well strocked to feed my three sons! And then there's all the books I'll read of my own choosing and with all the time in the world . ~ m
  6. LOL! It cut me off. The world will not come to an end if we don't get in this year (and this from a woman who might have to wait another 5 years to try again if she doesn't).

  7. I can understand the feeling. There are so many reasons that these decisions are made though. I was totally the department darling at my school, and it never even occurred to me to expect a rejection, which was ridiculous of no one to point out to me. So I totally get that it hurts, but don't give up hope yet. There's still two weeks of maybe out there, and even then the world will not ...

  8. Hm. I had the same thought about digging out of snow storms. Really though cooling your jets is a good way to go. One way or another, you'll start getting answers soon. March is the usual time for the flurry of English department decisions. You'll know everything you need to know in the next two weeks.

  9. Pissmidget will now be a new word in my repertoire . ~m
  10. Ho boy. Huge bummer. You still have a bunch of schools to hear from though. I've only got 3 left. I should have applied to a dozen like you did.

  11. English, critical theory. My list of places applied is in my signature line.

  12. Ooh, what's the thread idea? Reasons to be GLAD we got rejected? Seems counterintuitive but maybe more realistic ;)

  13. So, so sorry to hear this, hopefulJ. Where did you hear from? Remind me where you've applied. I've gotten 3 rejects so far. So I'm feeling the burn also.

  14. Just thought I'd say hello. What's your discipline? Where have you applied?

  15. Thanks. You're very kind. I've been talking with a fellow from Cornell via PM. Our portfolios are almost identical with the exception that he did his UG there and his MA at Penn. So he knows people in the program and already has an MA. I really think it has to do with my esoteric research interests at this point, since I know it's not my grades or scores.

  16. OK, those were both extremely funny. I "borrowed" for my Facebook wall. Thanks for a much needed laugh. ~ m
  17. It took 8 days for my rejection letter to come from Chapel Hill after my status date changed. I just received it last night. ~ m
  18. Thanks hon. I know you were. I'll be interested to see what you hear from the DGS. I'm waiting on Bloomington, Harvard, and Columbia (so basically just Bloomington). Haven't had the official reject from Cornell, but can assume. Losing hope today. Totally bummed and sad.

  19. I just finished reading Night Train to Lisbon by Pascal Mercier, which was wonderful. It reminded me of Steppenwolf or Zafon's The Shadow of the Wind. German linguistics (Classics, no less) has a random meeting with a woman in a red coat on a bridge. She's Portugese, and only briefly enters his day and then leaves again. They have no substantial interaction, yet he is compelled all of a sudden to travel by train to Lisbon. Once there, he becomes involved, by way of a mysterious book in a bookstore, in a decades old story of revolution, passion, insanity, and brilliance. There was so much in this book to love. And today, I just started W. Somerset Maugham's Of Human Bondage. Seemed an appropriate title for my life at the moment . I love Maugham's books, esp. The Painted Veil. So far OHB promises more of the same wonderous writing. Mmmm Maugham. As for my other "to reads," I'm on GoodReads and have a list of more than 200 to read, so... If you want to join my GoodReads, you can PM me. LOL. ~ m
  20. I hate to tell you this. I just got my rejection letter from Chapel Hill :s

  21. Don't cry yet. I haven't received anything (though I'll let you know today and tomorrow and Saturday, natch).

  22. Are any of the Cornell admits willing to share details (funding, your scores, your subfocus, etc.)? I counted 8 admits on the results thread. The Cornell English page says they typically take 12. It's probably fair to say that all 12 are not on these boards. I'm assuming this is a rejection on my end. Just curious what kind of contact you might have had with the department and anything else you might be willing to share. Thanks. ~ m
  23. I just saw that. I have Jodie's direct line number. Do you think I should call her tomorrow morning and gently inquire about the process?

  24. Not necessarily. Mine changed last Wednesday and I haven't gotten a thing, email or mail. I am on the west coast, but it's been plenty of time for a letter to arrive. So... You might get nothing, which I'm guessing means the app got passed up to the next level for review. I've spoken with Jodie, one of the assistants in the English graduate studies, several times during the application process. She's VERY nice. I'm seriously tempted to call her now and ask what this means. ~ m
  25. What happened? I saw your status update. Did you get another response? I counted 8 Cornell admits. They usually admit 12. Chances are pretty good the other 4 are not on GradCafe, which means I can assume a rejection there. Yes?
