  1. Anyone has an idea about University of Regina and Dalhousie University's criteria for admission? I applied in MENG in Petroleum Systems Engineering at Regina and MENG in Chemical Engineering at Dalhousie. Bachelors: Chemical Engineering (International) with 76% or 2.96 CGPA Research: Local refinery project (6 months) Experience: 3 internships (FMCG, Fertilizer and Oil and Gas) IELTS: 7 GRE: 303 LoRs: I have reason to believe they are good because my professors were very cooperative and I get on well with them.
  2. Submitted 3 so far. 1. University of Regina - MS Petroleum Systems Engineering (Spring 16) 2. Dalhousie University - MS Chemical Engineering (Fall 16) 3. Louisiana State University - MS Petroleum Engineering (Fall 16) Will submit 2 more for Fall 16, to California State University and one for University of New South Wales (Australia). Fall deadline has some time to go for some places so might even apply to some more. Hoping for the best. Profile: International student with B.Sc Chemical Engineering (76%) Research Exp: A petroleum refinery project (6 months) Work Exp: Less than 6 months in fertilizer sector GRE: 303 (That worries me) LoRs: They should be good. One is from Head of Department and other 2 are professors who I get along with pretty well.
  3. Hi Svent, I can do that. I'm not sure how the university will see that because I entered 2 referees' email address. So now when they get a reference from a 3rd referee who I did not enlist I don't know how they'll see it. You do have a good point and I'll do that if the university allow me a different referee. I have asked them about this and am waiting for a response.
  4. That is exactly what I am worried about. I have sent them an email asking if its alright. I just hope sending the LOR after a week later max doesn't harm me. I could have easily sent a LOR from a different professor but I already mentioned the one who is out of country. If they ask me to replace that referee then there is no problem.
  5. So one of my referees is out of the country at the moment and told me he would not be able to write me the LOR until he gets back on December 2nd. The application deadline is 30th November. It would have been nice of him had he told me he'll be out of the country as he had agreed to write a LOR and so I entered his email address while applying. Although the department hasn't specifically mentioned that LORs be submitted by the deadline but they did mention for all documents to be sent by then. So do I have anything to worry about? I can only ask him to send his LOR when he gets back.
  6. Applying for MS in Petroleum for fall 2016 with relatively low undergraduate percentage (76%) and low GRE score of 303 (Q:151, V:152) so it all boils down to the SOP and LORs. If anyone has time to critic it then please do let me know. Also some advice on whether I should explain my low GRE score or now would be appreciated. I gave the GRE twice and suffered from insomnia both times and was not able to crack the GRE on the test day despite rigorous practice which made me confident for better scores. Thanks!
  7. Hey Brown_Eyed_Girl. Right so here's my profile: -Undergraduate in BSc Chemical Engineering with 76% (3.0 CGPA) - 6 months of research project. - Around 6 months of work experience pertinent of Petroleum industry (all internships) I know my CGPA is also not stellar and I agree with your point regarding standardized test day anxiety. Is it a smart move if I mention that in my SOP or would it sound like an excuse? LSU for example stated they need a minimum of 300 overall, UHouston does not have a minimum score but from what I read through the US News website where I subscribed to get an insight of the average GRE scores for MS I saw that for engineering the average was around 157 to 161 which I am short of. Other schools such as TAMU, UTA and CSM are out as I don't meet their criteria as even though they do not mention the minimum but the profiles of the applicants admitted show that you more or less should be around 320 minimum. If I want I can go for a 3rd attempt but in doing so I might not meet some of the deadlines and just the mere possibility of messing it up again would literally demolish whatever little confidence I have in my application right now. So personally I don't think I have enough motivation or strength left to go through it all again. Can only hope for U Houston, LSU or University of Lafayette now with these scores in my opinion. Thanks!
  8. It was on the evening of July 27th when I made a topic on how to go about my re take after abysmal scores of Q-151, V-152. I paid heed to some advice here and avoided a total bookish approach. Since my main concern was Quant, Only followed the Manhattan 5lb book and went through each and every topic of Manhattan 5lb book this time and did all the corrections carefully understanding the mistakes. I have never been really bad at Maths but never been top of my class as well.I was able to do the Easy/Medium?Hard sections at the end of the book with ease getting 18 to 19 right on each under timed conditions. The GRE concepts were not new to me so I did not have to learn all the concepts from scratch. I went through the greenlight prep's quantitative strategies and picked up a skill or two for sure. I was able to do all the 5lb topics well and then gave 3 mocks - Manhattan free mock and 2 Power Prep Mocks with 1 mock per week leading up to the test day. 1. Manhattan Free Mock - V:156, Q;!57 2. PP Mock 1: V:150, Q:159 3. PP Mock 2: V:151, Q:159 Last time, I did my final mock a day before the exam but this time I totally relaxed as I felt confident in my preparation and thought I could get close to 160 on Quant this time around. However just like last time, I had an insomnia again. Its something I have encountered numerous times before and has affected my exams before as well. Although I was able to catch 3 hour of sleep this time. I wasn't as nervous this time like last time but as the Quant sections unfolded I soon realized I wasn't able to grasp a few questions like I was back in home or during my mock exams but still though overall I did better than my 151 on Quant last time. As it turns out, I got 152 on Quant and 147 on Verbal meaning a total of 299 as compared to my previous 303. Both horrible results, prepared for both with everything I had and genuinely felt I would do better this time but turned out to be opposite. Feeling extremely sad right now, feeling angry and most of all...not feeling confident in my ability in general. From an Engineering background trying for MS in Petroleum a 160 on Quant was a must. So what now? I do not think I have in it me now to go for a 3rd attempt as I've been indulged in the GRE for the past 6 months in total. I do not think even a 310 or 315 is good enough for TAMU or UTA. Is it possible I only report my first GRE score (303)? Should I go ahead and apply to Universities like U Houston or LSU? Do I have a chance in them? I can only try to write a great SOP now and the LORs are good in my opinion. Advice would be helpful. Thanks!
  9. I have my GRE on 2nd November. Really struggling with the verbal as being a non native I struggle with the convoluted vocabulary and on the RCs. Having said that my entire education has been in english but the GRE verbal is a whole next level which I can't seem to master even towards my 2nd GRE attempt. My main focus is on quant and here are my 3 mock tests so far 1. Manhattan Free Mock - V:156 Q:157 2. ETS PP 1 - V:150. Q:159 3. ETS PP 1 - V:151, Q:157 Now a point I want to make is that on the ETS PP mocks, I was getting around 17 to 18 Qs right on the first Quant section and around 10 to 11 on the 2nd which was a touch harder understandably. With just 2 days to go what should I do to get at least a 160 on Quant? I've done all the topics of 5lb books, their corrections, the Quant and Verbal sections at the end of that book. Also I've done the ETS OG as well. So what else can I do in these 2 days?
  10. Hey there, Your Quant score is more than decent so if you're applying for Engineeirng or CS or similar fields where the Quant score is more important then I think your score is good enough. Then again, if you're applying to top of the line schools such as MIT, Stanford, Columbia, Georgia Tech, Caltech and co then perhaps giving it again isn't a bad option. Since the deadline is 15th December you can always prepare all the rest of your documents by then and give your GRE on 1st. 15 days time is good enough to apply. Just remember that GRE is 1/4th of the application. You also need to take your SOP and LOR seriously as from what I've learned and heard, universities often use the GRE to filter out the applications and then look for applicant's ability through their SOPs and LORs. I'm also giving my GRE retake next Monday and I'd kill to get a 162 on Quant like you this time. Hope it helps!
  11. There must be more information given for this question. Remember, on the GRE the figures are not drawn to scale unless stated. For example if C is the mid point for the line joining AE then you can draw an imaginary line from point B to C. Now you get two similar triangles which are isosceles. Since you know BAC = 48 then you should be able to figure out that DCE = DEC = 48. Solving this you get 84 degrees for CDE. CDE + 2(48) = 180 CDE = 84. Hope you get it.
  12. Hi guys, I'll be applying in the Fall 16 session for MS Petroleum. I gave my GRE a month ago and got a score of 303 which is lower than my expectations. I'll be giving it again but I believe I'll fall in the 310-315 bracket at best. I'm an international student with Bachelors in Chemical Engineering with a 2.96 cgpa but that is 76%. My final year research project was on Gasoline refining for which I got an A grade (highest in my batch). Any idea which universities I should target? CSM, TAMU and UT Austin would be really tough to get in I feel so I personally would be targeting university of Houston, University of Pittsburgh, LSU, Texas Tech and USC. Kindly let me know what my chances about getting into these universities. I would love to get an opportunity for work as well after graduation however long that is possible.
  13. Hi guys, I know this section is predominantly about GRE discussion but I couldn't find another place where I should post this question. I gave my IELTS on August 29th and yesterday received my official score via post. They call it the TRF. However, I don't know how I'm supposed to send my score electronically as I wasn't given that option while registering. Will I have to write my form number in the applications or what? I doubt uploading a scanned copy would be considered official. I'll be applying from Pakistan. Some advise on this would be really appreciated.
  14. Thanks a lot man, I will definitely take on this new approach you mention and this time with the intention of taking the GRE for the last time so this relationship is over.
