  1. Blerg indeed. And, Literature or English?
  2. Ehhh. Acceptances and wait-lists for Duke showing up on results board, and yet still nothing here. There's still time, I guess, but, already starting to think it might be turning into a rejection, and then how bad my interview must have been, since usually they seem to wait-list all interviewees not directly accepted. Blah. (I know I have a couple of acceptances, but Duke was a much higher choice..... well: now, switching from last night's celebratory beer to a sadder w(h)ine.)
  3. Congrats on both! I also interviewed on Wednesday, but haven't heard anything yet, and nothing's changed on my application page...... the wait continues.
  4. Congrats!!! --- Also, someone at work today told me that I look like a grad student (like in a good way: "Classy but casual") Whoo! It's totally official now.
  5. Thanks!! (and, yeah, it's to Infinite Jest. My main undergrad obsession/thesis topic, and probable part-of-grad-research )
  6. I was out for happy hour with coworkers (in part to stop thinking about the interviews from this week, which, still no word on those), but, while there I got my second acceptance! Yay, Vanderbilt! Edit: and the captcha thing for when I was submitting my results to the board was..... "Yale." (is this a sign? [it was literally a road sign, too] or does this happen all the time? [the last one i did was just a string of numbers]. ?? )
  7. I sort of hate to double-post but: as I saw another entry on the results for a Duke Literature wait-list, I started to worriedly check my email, and.......not Duke (still nothing for me, there), but, an acceptance from Vanderbilt (English) was waiting! Still a bit of time before official word on funding, but, super excited!
  8. Anyone to claim the wait list from Duke Lit? (Not trying to second guess you, but sure about Literature rather than English for the program? Seems like quite a quick turn around from the interviews [Tues/Weds] to now--and right in line with all the English admits for today [which, congrats to you all!])
  9. Congrats!!!!! (Here's hoping the Literature turnaround from interview to decision is as quick, because, wow that was fast!)
  10. Just got an email from my alumni association: "Are you ready to make your next career move?" Why, yes. I'm just waiting on others, first, before it can happen.
  11. It seems there was a period a few years ago, when English programs were trying out interviews as part of the process--Chicago, for example, seems to have only just recently started doing them, and there was a bit of discussion (or maybe only results) here from years past that talked about Stanford, and maybe Yale as well. There was definitely larger scale (in higher ed publications, I think, or maybe just Yale's own magazine) discussion of Yale's process--programs that traditionally interviewed seemed to find them valuable, which raised questions about how other departments were handling admissions. So, I think maybe that trial period worked out as something also valuable for some (Chicago) and less so for other schools, who have since gone back to a non-interview application review. Edit: here's the article I found about Yale: http://yaledailynews.com/blog/2012/01/11/grad-school-divided-over-interviews/. I can't find a follow-up, though, to see how this ended up, or for what reasons Yale English went back to no interviews.
  12. Okay. I know I was just complaining about loud neighbors, but: now I've got one literally blasting ACDC (starting at 6:30 in the morning). I heard people above me knocking on the wall, and I think someone knocking on the offender's door. And yes, they turned it up. Like, what is even going through this person's mind that says, yes, 6:30 am is an appropriate time for this, and screw anyone who doesn't think so, I'll just make it louder. At least with the harpist, I'm fairly convinced they have no idea people can hear them, but.......ugh.
  13. Eep. That sounds like a mess. Mine didn't go through the two stage acceptance process, so, I haven't encountered the same thing. Though do read what the CGS Resolution says about this, especially what I have in bold: (Granted, the first "acceptance" isn't covered by this resolution at all, since it doesn't have anything to do with financial offers, but I feel like the school itself would be less likely to try to stop you from rescinding your 'acceptance' if you have no funding [pure speculation, though, on my part, so please please someone correct me if you have more experience, and other thoughts]): " Students are under no obligation to respond to offers of financial support prior to April 15; earlier deadlines for acceptance of such offers violate the intent of this Resolution. In those instances in which a student accepts an offer before April 15, and subsequently desires to withdraw that acceptance, the student may submit in writing a resignation of the appointment at any time through April 15. However, an acceptance given or left in force after April 15 commits the student not to accept another offer without first obtaining a written release from the institution to which a commitment has been made."
  14. ugh. really. like, do you really think I want to attend your school's open house, given that I didn't even apply to your program?
  15. Oh man, @cloverhinge, I think that was my exact experience! But, we're all getting so close now! We've probably been waiting longer by now than we still have to wait, so, any time now.... but until then:
  16. So, they asked me some relatively specific stuff about my sample, focusing on larger thoughts behind it, and the same for my statement, really. Then gave me time to ask about the program. It went okay (I'm a nervous interview person, though). They also said decisions in about a week.
  17. @Pink Fuzzy Bunny I had a brief discussion about this once with a prof who was on an adcom. They were very displeased with applicants who didn't know the right name of the university. @piglet33 any chance you're using wireless, and could instead plug into an ethernet port? My campus has both available, but the recommend the wired connection for things like Skype.
  18. So, the interview wasn't really all that bad, to be honest, but I just get nervous in those situations, and ramble-y, and go off on tangents that had very little to do with their actual questions. We'll see how it ends up, though, I guess. One hour to chill a bit before the next.
  19. @piglet33 I totally should have known, because my brother lives in the city I'm interviewing in--but I guess the only time I ever adjust is when I'm there, so I'm used to adjusting in only that direction. Either that or I was just not thinking clearly when I saw the time, since I had so much going on this week. Ah well. At least it got me on my toes, so now I'll be super prepared for the actual thing.
  20. Oh. Time zones. The best part is I even realized there was a difference, but calculated in the wrong direction. Hah. Thankfully, my opposite take put me early for the interview instead of late, but, I still feel super silly (I need to leave work just a bit early! I need to make sure I can use your office starting around X-too-early time! Sure I can grab dinner between the two today!) God. Whoops.
  21. I was contacted for one. There wasn't much more info in the email, in terms of how many people of those 65 time slots really ended up getting one, or whether it was a crucial step, or rather one that's helpful for them, but if people in your field (which is how they seem to be assigning interviewers) weren't available at the same times you said you were available it would be okay as well. We'll see I guess.
  22. Oh my god. If I didn't know for sure that no one else at my workplace was applying for grad school, I'd wonder if I work with you. Because almost everyone there is suddenly obsessed with this. I've resisted so far, but.....they are so cute....
  23. Yeah, it's like 7 of them. Also only twenty minutes, so I feel like it will only end up being them and me each introducing ourselves, with that many people, but we'll see! Thanks again!
  24. Thanks! The first one is a little less intimidating--younger scholars, just two to talk with--so hopefully that one will go well and I'll be warmed up for the next (with the whole admissions committee, made up of a lot of really big names in the field). Overall, I'm feeling pretty good about it now, though.
  25. Even though I've lately only been able to drop in briefly and read, not post a whole lot (work has been busy busy--which is good for a distraction, at least), I definitely agree. Here's hoping things come out well for all of you! But: I have (2!) skype interviews tomorrow. They're a few hours a part, so, yay for time to breathe/eat, but: eep! Luckily, I have incredibly supportive professors, who talked me through the whole thing (well, or what they think it might be, since interviews are pretty rare in my field), offered office space for a quiet place to do the call, and so on. I already sent thank you cards, but now I feel like I need to send more, or like, party balloons. I don't know. So much gratitude, and very little that can really express it.
