kasbah got a reaction from Pedrocc90 in SIPA vs Fletcher
I'm a Fletcher student, so I'm biased, but I chose Fletcher over SIPA because (actually I didn't end apply to SIPA because of these reasons)
Too expensive I heard through SIPA grads and current SIPA students that the big name professors are never there. Like, you'll never actually get to face time with Jeffrey Sachs I knew SIPA grads who were still looking for jobs a few months after graduation. Yeah, that happens to some Fletcher grads too, but I figured that if I end up in that position, I'd rather be in that position with a lot less debt Larger class sizes at SIPA At the same time, I'd rather be in NYC than Medford any day of the week.

kasbah reacted to goforthegold in What on earth does "leadership" mean?
Personally I too am tired of the word. I much prefer the word citizenship and all it entails: being a citizen, leading as one, serving your fellow citizen, etc.
There's been a good bit of criticism about the neoliberal model of "leadership" we see and read so much about these days, particularly by people like William Deresiewicz. Look into it if you're interested.

kasbah reacted to Flou in Cambridge or LSE/Sciences Po (Fulbright)?
Wow! Congrats
Oxbridge is a big brand in the USA, however a dual degree at Science Po AND LSE funded by Fulbright...I would go with that. The name "Fulbright" alone will already boost your resume like crazy. It is a very powerful network (and they give you money, too!). I experienced it first hand when I was in the US (top 10 School) (A friend of mine was in the programme). Combined with a dual degree from two of the most prestigious universities in the world in the field of IR/Politics. Sounds like a good deal to me. And it even comes with the option to live in Paris and London :).
But that is just my opinion. Hope I could help you at least a little bit

You guys, finally received something about funding! I received 7000 a semester. They called it a "graduate fellowship." Hope everyone else just got emails too!

Lol! I actually created this account just to put the rest of the forum's souls at ease (haha)
I'm really nervous and keep checking my email every five seconds. I need good funding

What if, by pure coincidence, no one on gradcafe got funding, and that's why we haven't been sent anything?

Hopefully, since Georgetown is nowhere close to any metro station, we will be in luck and there will be no delay!

Yea the Director of the International Development Studies Program where I applied emailed me today and gave reasons as to why I should attend GWU.
But it doesn't really matter since I haven't heard anything regarding funding....

@Grad Decision 2016 I'm a Russian citizen. And thanks - fingers crossed I'll end up in Fordham, and if UofM won't work out - see you in NYC too!
As I see you are interested in the former USSR region - do you speak any of the region's languages?
I also would love to focus on the region (MENA), but just looked through the course catalog and they don't have anything region particular (only found politics of Middle East). But they offer a variety of languages and language immersion programs, so maybe its possible to take some courses outside of the program and make up your own specialization

kasbah reacted to Grad Decision 2016 in Fordham IPED 2016
Hello all,
Congrats guys! I also received a funding offer with a Public Service Fellowship. I am interested in focusing my studies on the former Soviet Union and Central Asia. I am an RPCV and still living in Kyrgyzstan currently, but will be back in the US by the summer. If UM-Ann Arbor offers more funding (I was offered 1/3 tuition reduction, and am on the waitlist for the FLAS Fellowship as well) I think I'll head there simply because of their Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies.
I really like the quantitative focus of the IPED program at Fordham however, and the fact that it's an easier route to do a dual with an economics degree. Plus, Fordham seems to always get a lot of RPCVs ( @KodiH @kasbah!) so it will feel like coming home!
Does anyone know more about the opportunities at Fordham to focus studies on particular regions of the world?
@liya - Your location says "Russia." Are you a Russian citizen? Congrats on the Fulbright! Maybe we'll see each other in NYC!

kasbah reacted to monocle in Fall 2016 Admissions Cycle
I think the Public Affairs rankings by US news are some of the worst of all the rankings lol. They only rank MPA programs, and its based on an average score of the perception from academics at other schools.. lol why? it's just a rating system from 1-5? No other data was recorded/considered? And they don't include NPSIA in their considerations.

kasbah reacted to chocolatecheesecake in Arranging for more funding?
Please do negotiate your offer via email, and be sure that you really do want to attend the school if they give you more money. So I would probably only ask one school to negotiate. You can ask them to try to match the highest offer you got if you really want to attend this one instead. Be prepared to email them solid proof of how much you were offered - I had to forward to Duke my letter from USC when I was negotiating. Don't think of this as a way to get as much money as possible - if you and this school both want you to enroll at this school, then put your cards on the table, and ask them to help you find a way to do so.

kasbah reacted to Kaneisha in HKS 2016
Congratulations to all of you have been admitted! You're in for quite a journey for the next two years, so get some sleep now while you can!
For those of you who received rejection notifications, please stay encouraged in your pursuit of a top-notch policy degree. I've seen a LOT of people reapply to HKS and gain admission once they worked on key areas of weakness in their profile. Use this forum and other trustworthy resources to get feedback on your actual application in its entirety (not just your profile stats) so that you are equipped with the information you need to reapply next season or in a few years.
For those of you on the waitlist, I do not envy you! That status can be very frustrating. But there is hope!
