  2. Congrats on your two admissions!!!!!! I often found your post at other forums too and your admission gives me hope. Plus, I am also from different major, not much on my CV except industrial career, so much more hope, I guess. Hope you have a wonderful start this fall!
  3. Got off a Skype interview with faculty... I couldn't really answer any question because I don't know anything. I didn't prepare anything since I didn't expect it. Just regret saying everything....... Literally whining...................
  4. True! Making a plan B definitely helps get you out of infinite agony. After finishing three episodes of a series drama in three days, tons of comic books and coffees, I rather felt exhausted than relaxed. My airplane ticket that I bought on the whim would not get me anywhere for another month, so I started to make a 3-months period plan to refresh myself. Now I lurk in these forums about once a week (which is largely decreased from five times a day).
  5. May the force be with you.
  6. I sent my transcripts in late Oct. and got the same message. My department says: I submitted my application by the deadline, but it still says “incomplete” on the web-based checklist. When and how will I be notified if my application is complete? The graduate application Checklist is updated by the Department staff from mid-December through mid-January. Keeping in mind that the University is structured on the Quarter system and that there is a University Winter Closure from the third week of December through the first day of classes in January, the checklists may not be completed by staff until mid-January. If the checklist status is ‘incomplete’, it may be that the applicant materials have been received, or not, and the staff have not yet had the opportunity to enter the updated information. Alternately, if certain application materials have not yet been received (i.e. official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and test scores), there should be sufficient time for the applicant to provide these materials during the first part of January. So, I guess I should re-check in mid-January, and if it is "incomplete" until then, I'll ask to the department directly. Now is the shut down period for Stanford, so I think this information could also explain your situation, too.
  7. I think you have tried everything you could, and you have every reason to change your reference if there is any candidate for you. Committees understand that applicants cannot control their professors, so I think you are safe as long as you can send a third letter within this month. Change the reference, but if you will do it, make sure it will be someone who you can rely on.
  8. Have you read her book or blog postings? I first read her blog posts and bought her book. also subscribing her newsletter. She advised her prospective clients to first have a look at her book and then make it clear that you need further service. Her book covers a wide range of academic life and yeah, beside whether you take her advice or not, it is helpful to hear from former director of department.
  9. Have you guys read this explanation from WUSTL? It is very succinct and I think it can be applied to other majors broadly. I've already submitted several application, and I wish I read this earlier! Think I haven't done well on my mentioning faculties...
  10. It's Thanksgiving, man. I think further contacts would give a negative impression in this season if you are applying for fall. Just allow some time. A pot won't boil if you check up on it every other minute.
  11. Where did you read this guideline? I just read this page and thought that I was going to write 1-2 pages, single-spaced because they were not clear about it.
  12. Hey, I majored in sociology but am applying for anthropology because journals, book, and questions that really spoke to my heart were all those of anthropologists. As rising_star said, you might have to focus more on theoretical or topical interests unless you are particularly interested in the history or the literature of a certain region. Think about what kind of coursework you are going to take in Ph.D. program and research projects you are going to undertake.
  13. I think what kind of emotion or event arouses you could be an option, too. In my case, some are good and some are bad in my writings, but my deepest desire is anger. I am an idealist so I tend to write about things that make me mad, say a discrepancy between what is being done and what should be done. Some of my friends write out of desire to share their knowledge and others to grasp meanings of moments that will never come back. I might not be a person who can answer to this question, though.
  14. I provided my Statement of Purpose when I visited my reference, and she said, "You want to get into a Ph.D. program for this? Read writings of XXX, XXX, and XXX." So I read all the books and revised my research theme, sent her updated files although she did not reply til Nov just to give her impression that I was doing my homework and I was serious about this plan. One day, she called me and gave me 40 minutes of feedback. By then, I was kind of stuck because I knew there was something bugging me I didn't know what the problem was. Then I revised my writing based on her feedback and she said "Now you sound like you've got something." Well, I stopped updating on my Statement of Purpose to others who did not respond to my writing at all ("sorry, I was busy! did not have a look at your mail" or something) So, definitely yeah, I would recommend showing your Statement to your professors and see how they react.
  15. I think, when it comes to looking at an applicant as a "person," the only thing the committee could depend on is LoR because your achievements (other materials) can speak about only a part of your personality.
  16. @noumenope My number is actually higher than yours lol. I just listed 5-6 programs among my full list so that I don't seem needy, and made sure that other programs were from various levels of reputation so that they would not think "this applicant would not choose us anyway."
  17. I so relate to you! I was clear about the high number of applications I was preparing, either, but he seemed to not remember anything from our conversation. Plus, my professor said that he was so "excited" about my decision in June. This makes it even difficult to understand what is going on inside his head! He was the only tenured professor in my professional M.A. program, which is so small and liberalized enough to fill all their course offerings with adjunct teachers (not in the U.S.). How could I possibly find another tenured reference when I have twelve contracted teachers and the only one tenured professor who is a jerk? It's been a while since I graduated and I am currently working in industry, which makes it more difficult to find a reference in academia. So after feeling devastated for one day, I sent out mails to a chief of NGO that I was involved before and a lecturer from college. This lecturer is not a tenure-track professor but knows me well about my academic and personal life. Most schools clearly state that they want recommendations from academic sources, so my decision was that a well though-through, kind letter from a lecturer would outweigh a formulaic one from my boss. I did not have many options but I did everything in my power anyway. If I have to go for another round next year (hopefully not...), I will contact more than three people to avoid the situation I had this year... But other two professors, one of whom is a department head and the other is a tenured professor, were actually fascinating. Even though I contacted them after several years, they submitted their letters way earlier than I thought and one of them carved her time out to give me comments on my Statement of Purpose. I did not really have anyone who was able to give comments on writings for anthropology, and her feedback was a lifesaver. You know, during this whole application things, I learned about who are reliable and who are not. That is another lesson I can use... I hope your application goes well!!
  18. Totally. I was asked the same thing so I e-mailed my professor with other samples that I downloaded here and there and bullet-pointed contents to "refresh his memory." And the result was that he said he was TOO busy to write a letter for me in November. (I first asked him on June and updated my writings for four months, and I spent a year and a half TAing for him.) He was a jerk. I just decided not to ask him further and found another reference. There really are irresponsible, lazy professors out there, I wish I could've realized earlier...
  19. Hey, there. Does anyone know how to check on the status of recommendation requests on IU's system? All other graduate schools provided links or pages where I can send reminders, but there was no notification mail or anything after I submitted my app for IU. (I cannot check on whether they received my test scores and transcripts either, IU's system is so inconvenient....) The deadline is Dec 1st and no reply to my e-mail so far... I would really appreciate it if anyone could advise on this matter.
