Obviously, being a cash cow doesn't necessarily preclude students from receiving a good education. Columbia's Statistics department is highly regarded and I'm sure Masters students can really make the most of their degree by being proactive enough.

There are actually more than you think. I know of friends who are enrolled in MS programs in statistics with ENORMOUS enrolment sizes (at least 80 students). A couple that come to mind are Columbia and Rutgers. Masters classes are typically taught by adjunct faculty, emeritus faculty or part time lecturers. To those accepted to Purdue (PhD Stats): Have they made all of their acceptances already? I still haven't heard back but I see some decisions on the Results page.

Not good. Rejected by 4 schools and still waiting to hear back from 5. I'm applying for jobs because I'm anticipating rejections across the board this year. I hope things work out for you at Cornell!

I still haven't heard back either. I get the feeling that is not good news.

Canadian schools are a bit different than US in that applicants are expected to have a masters degree prior to the PhD. It is rare (impossible (?)) for someone to go directly into a PhD program from undergrad in Canada.

Anyone still waiting on PhD decisions? Still haven't heard back from 7 schools. It's been an agonizing wait this past month.

It seems like it was around March 4th last year that there were decisions for Purdue posted. In general, I think many schools have been late with their decisions this year. Perhaps there are more applicants than usual.

I hear the opposite is true. The following in fact comes directly from UConn's program website: "While emphasizing research that will benefit practicing actuaries, the Ph.d. program is not intended to prepare students to become practicing actuaries. In fact, many employers of actuaries regard a Ph.D. as a disincentive to hire. Those intending a career in actuarial practice should pursue the M.S degree. The Ph.D. prepares for an academic career in research and teaching." http://www.math.uconn.edu/degree-programs/graduate/ph-d-in-actuarial-science/ It's difficult to gauge actuarial science programs as there aren't any rankings for them. But it seems like a PhD in actuarial science wouldn't help too much if you're planning on industry work afterwards. That makes enough sense as PhD programs might be too theoretical for real world use.

From what I've gathered around here, I believe "prestige" of the program really only matters if you're planning on a career in academia. If you're looking to go into industry, UC Davis looks like it's in a great location being near Silicon Valley and such. Obviously, UC Davis has a great reputation in general as well.

Is anyone waiting to hear from UCSB and/or Michigan State for statistics?

Sort of off-topic, but can anyone tell me what "A.M. Statistics" stands for? I've been seeing so many of these on the results page. I would have guessed Master of Arts but I often see, "A.M Statistics, PhD", so that couldn't be it.

I highly doubt there is such a program. A PhD program has teaching and research requirements that should be done on campus. There should be online Masters programs available. A quick Google search shows that Penn State, NC State and Texas A&M offer online Masters degrees.
