  1. It sounds like you are staying active and conducting research so that is good! I would say as far as safety schools it is kind of a crap shoot (in my experience) just apply to a lot to be safe; Miami U could potentially be a safety school. I would maybe start drafting a resume, personal statement, and other required writing samples before your senior year fall semester starts because the deadlines tend to sneak up on ya. I used USNews as a loose guide, I personally feel you can not get caught up in rankings, but to start with you can look there. Additionally, you need to consider the specialty you want to go into. For example, a school may be conducting great research with great professors in one or two areas but have an overall lower ranking. For instance, UNC and analytical chemistry, while they are considered 15th overall they have what I consider a top analytical program. If spectroscopy is what you are interested in maybe find a school that has many professors doing that sort of research, because generally you should find a school that has multiple professors you would want to work for. Lastly, You should probably like the location as you will be there at least 5 years. To sum, I think you need to take many things into consideration when looking at schools. Good luck! Sounds like you are on the right track http://pubs.acs.org/isubscribe/journals/cen/80/i47/html/8047education2.html
  2. If you were going to be the last student he accepted into his group I would maybe be concerned, only because I, personally, would get lonely towards the end after everyone else graduated. More importantly, what about his funding? A lot of older professors I know aren't getting grants renewed and the funding is drying up. Just my thoughts!
  3. It is my understanding that the MSTP (medical science training program i.e. MD/PhD program) as it is called in the US, is paid for; however, it takes a long time to complete-- 6-8 years. On top of that, it doesn't include time for residency and or fellowships. That being said, getting a masters and then enrolling in a MSTP program would take a considerable amount of time. Furthermore, paying for a degree to eventually get another degree seems like a round about way to do things. It seems to me that the MSTP program expedites the PhD work so that it can be completed in as little as 3-4 years. If it were me I would go directly to your program of interest. Medical school is typically very expensive (here in the US) and paying for another degree when there may be other (possibly large) costs in your future seems foolish. Of course these are just my opinions...
  4. I just emailed UPenn because I have literally heard nothing... even with all these rejections out...."still reviewing your app"
  5. I did an interview. Haven't heard anything.
  6. I had the same transition from Under review to being reviewed and I got an acceptance call last night.
  7. Where the heck is UNC this year??? I've only seen one accept.
