  1. @Everyone Thank you! I'm relieved to have an acceptance done with!

@frenchlover I just got my Yale rejection, too. I think they accept approximately one person per year. Definitely not a reflection on your ability to get accepted to all the other places.

@Saltshaker Oooh! If you don't mind me asking, what were the difficult questions? Honestly, the fact that they asked difficult questions is probably a good sign. I didn't get past basic questions. : (

Just got an email and I got so excited but lol it was from Amazon. <_<

If this admissions cycle has taught me anything, it's that I should have made a brand new email address for my applications. Next time Amazon wants to email, it had better be offering me admission somewhere.

  3. @Saltshaker Thanks! As long as you don't say "laidité" instead of "laideur", you're probably golden. Oops. Good luck!

@awhiterussian Wow, 17? I did 11, and it cost a small fortune. I wouldn't worry too much about the lack of responses. The next three weeks tend to be major weeks for schools to get back to you. That said, I'm feeling the same way. Let's hope to hear good news soon!

  4. @madamoiselle That's a really good point! I was definitely warned not to decide on my exact sub-sub-subfield in my SoP for that reason. And my POI at Pitt assured me that in their program, as well as many others, graduate students are encouraged to apply their base theoretical frameworks to several eras and fields via article publication.

  5. @frenchlover We'll start hearing even more as the week goes on. Next week and the week after should be big, too! Also, interviews aren't acceptances, but they're a lot closer than non-interviews! But agreed. It'll be nice not to wonder what I'll be doing next year.

@Carly Rae Jepsen I think that's somewhat normal, but it might also lead to burnout. If you have an area you're really passionate about, you're more likely to stick with it throughout the five or six years of graduate study. French can have a pretty high attrition rate at the doctoral level. At the same time, finances and area ARE really important. Ideally, you'll get all the things!

  6. @Green.Mango I'd also throw Boston University into the mix of "great film/postcolonial studies". Also, rarely-mentioned school on the forum, but University of Iowa's French program has a lot of well-published professors working in immigration/diaspora studies.

Wow, someone is getting serial acceptances everywhere! The same person who got all those interviews also got into UCLA!

Wow. I've never heard of someone getting this many acceptances/interviews. Even if you're an amazing candidate, some schools will reject you. What is this person's secret?!

  8. What news has everyone heard from universities? So far, UCLA read my app and said, "Yeah...nope!", so that's a rejection. Penn State emailed me this morning for an interview, and I've had a few nice emails with my POI at Pittsburgh. Otherwise, radio silence.

  9. Well, speaking from experience, it's difficult to start a graduate program right after undergrad. I began my master's immediately, and...it was way more intensive than I'd expected. I decided to take a gap year in order to pursue a Fulbright, and, as a result, I feel way more prepared for doctoral studies now, with all of that under my belt. But, I mean, it depends on the person. I might have just been immature for my age.

  10. It's the same person getting interviews/acceptances everywhere, based on the GRE scores/GPA. I'd be really curious as to what their application was like, because they've now heard good news from three Ivy League schools and U. Michigan. #jealous
